I have never noticed any posts from Spain but with amount of members this forum has I would think it quite likely. The wife and I are seriously considering moving out there and would love to hear from any Sheffielders that have taken the plunge.

We have done our research but there will no doubt be some surprises coming our way, some nice and some not so nice but that's life isn't it? The one thing that I will miss most of all is The Peak National Park but balancing this with all the things that I won't miss I think that I could live with the loss. Our son and his partner are hell bent on emigrating to New Zealand so they wouldn't be an issue, we might even end up spending summer in New Zealand and Summer in Spain.

Any comments would be welcome.

Aren't Spain the same as us and New Zealand opposite in terms of seasons? So summer in Spain and summer in NZ may be possible, or could have just been a typo and I am talking nonsense :)

New Zealand has their winter whilst Europe has it's summer so it is possible to have two summers by going to NZ during our winter. ;)

Where do you plan to live in Spain? and are you going to work or just be retired.
There are lots of things to think about,Can you speak Spanish?Rather important if you have a problem such as illness which takes you to hospital.
I have lived in southern Spain and I can tell you it is HOT in the Summer.

Everyone seems to think sunshine is wonderful but it can be very draining day after day and if you enjoy the Peak District I can assure you that green grass in Spain is in short supply.
Choose carefully and Good luck

Northern Spain, Catalonia, between Barcelona and France, is beautiful, especially near the coast. Not extremely hot in summer and much lowere cost of living than here. Also plenty of English expats and you can get English TV.
And no TV license fee.

My inlaws live in Southern Spain, in a little village called Los Gallardos which is in Murcia.

We go out to visit them a lot and it is lovely out there but they have had a lot of problems. It's certainly not the easy life if that is what you're after.

My husband & I lived in Spain for almost 3 years & love it!! We live in Oliva (market town) in Valencia. Quite a few Brits here, but still very traditional. Hubby still works in UK for 2 weeks a month, so we have no work problems out here & also get free health cover through his Uk contributions.

We have passable Spanish, but can always pay for help translating if needed. The cost of living in this area is so much cheaper than the UK as we are not living in a tourist area.

The thing that makes it for us though is a good 6 to 8 months of outdoor living, not a few snatched days here & there.

We favour an area near to the coast between Alicante and Valencia. We don't want to be in the thick of it holiday makers wise but wish to be near enough to shops etc. Health care doesn't worry us we will have passed the evil 60 where we would get the same as the Spanish and by what we have heard a lot better than over here.

It's all a balance of what you like over there and what you like over here, both of us take to the shade when it is hot and keep taking in fluids, so no problem and we would have a pool to cool down in. The language is not a problem, we are not fluent but will get better with time and the odd lesson.

The thing that we have learned is that you need something to do so a house with garden and pool is essensial for us. We have met plenty of folk who opted for apartments and spend most of their time going from bar to bar, when the boredom sets in the booze takes over.

We can only try. ;)

Hi all,

The North of Spain is quite different. Everybody knows the sunny South, but the North is more like Scotland. High mountains, plenty of green grass... and very cold Winters. Last week it was snowing in the North of Burgos!!!

Also the food is amazing !!!

I can tell Marco knows his stuff, my uncle used to spend some of his time in one of those God-forgotten villages in Burgos and he could hear the wolves howling in the cold winter nights!

Be sure to thoroughly check out planning permissions and any prospective area development plans in respect of a property/land you plan to buy. The regional government in this part of Spain had a draconian policy of compulsorily acquiring - with minimal compensation - properties which it deemed to be inappropriately located or obstructing further development plans for an area.
