Im about half way through taking me driving lessons so im considering what car to buy when i pass

Do you recommend getting a new/year old car? Or just go for a second hand one for a cheap price?

Also what kind of car???

Second hand car, purely if you have a bump whilst gaining experience your not going to lose much money.

Choose a car that can be easy to fix, i.e not many electrical parts to go wrong. Then if something does happen your dad is more likely to be able to fix it, or give it a go yourself.

Don't go for a car with an engine bigger than a 1.3/1.4 otherwise you won't be able to afford the insurance/tax.

My first choice would be a Maestro but that is just me :D My first car was a Maestro, I hated it at first but 5 years down the line I love it. It flies through MOT's every year with no major expense, cheap to insure, cheap tax, cheap to repair and is dead reliable. My experience with them anyway.

However they aren't everyones choice, so cars I can think of offhand that would be suitable to get you on the road are fiestas, micras, polos.

When choosing a second hand car which is old, try to find one with FSH, normally owned by someone elderly. These are the types of car that will have had little use and been maintained by the dealer each year.

I was thinking something along thelines of the Suzuki Alto - they're a bit poo, but they are econmical, cheap and within the cheaper insaurance band. However, I doubt it would hack my trip from Kent up to you greatly.

Your first car is important to you as you don't want to end up with a pile of junk that is forever giving you grief. With this in mind don't be in a rush to buy the first car you see and whatever you do don't get hung up on it's colour. There are thousands of cars out there and thousands of people quite happy to rip you off, therefore when you go looking seriously have someone with you who knows a certain amount. If you can afford it the AA do a car inspection but if you're only wanting a cheap run around set yourself a maximum limit, check to see what the insurance is going to cost on various makes and don't be afraid to ask questions about a cars history. I can't emphasise enough though 'get some-one to go with you who knows what they're talking about'
Good luck

Agree very much here too, if you don't know what your looking for it is very easy to get ripped off.

I would be looking for something like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=18262&item=4501171223&rd=1 low mileage, cheap, with FSH so you know it has been cared for well.

You should go for a Vauxhall Corsa, great little cheap car but comfortable and eassy to drive. My bloke got his to learn and has had it since, been a few years now. Also his sister has and both his parents, very reliable cars they are!
