View Full Version : Can we meet your friendly onlead dog?

Hi guys

You must all think I'm paranoid!! Recently Takara seems to be going through an 'odd phase' that's all I can call it really. I can't decide whether she needs her confidence boosting, whether she's going through a late fear imprint stage (which apparently can, and has happened) or what.

She's a bit funny with being near onlead dogs when she's onlead, this isn't so much in open spaces, but at training, at Strix's house ( ), in closed spaces where the other dogs are onlead.

So, we'd like to be able to meet some people, first maybe in a park, then maybe meet someone else in a P@H store or something where she can get used to meeting and greeting dogs while she's on her lead. I think because she's always been really friendly, she's always met dogs while she's offlead because any dogs she's had to be onlead near, have been nervous, aggressive or in training, so she hasn't met them.

Now she's very nervous to meet other dogs whilst on the lead so it'd really help if anyone can give us some of their time just for us to introduce them on a lead and walk past.

Otherwise, can anyone suggest any places where friendly dogs are usually on leads?

As well as P@H you could try Jolleys on Meadowhall Retail Park, dogs are allowed in there

Thanks guys :)

Hunni - I will definitely take you up on the offer but entire male dogs are a completely different kettle of fish... Takara's psycho spice around them so we may have to leave meeting Woody until we've achieved the easier targets first :)

Sooz - I was in your pub today! No other dogs though, and when Strix and I came the other day Takara spent most of the time barking at Brude
Today she spent most her time barking at other customers  she doesn't understand that they don't want to play when they're having their lunch

I'm surprised we've not been barred from your pub yet!!

Thanks Mezzymess, I did know about Jollyes, I just tend to avoid it because they keep all the unboxed dog treats at Takara-thieving-level!!

Hmmm, last time we were in Brude was trying to order his own beer from the bar again

Is this group shaping up for a dog walking/training park meet do you think? ;)

If we manage to adopt a certain dog.....but its a very big if......we are going to need help with dog to dog socialisation too. ;)

Strix I'm not looking for a group thing personally (okay, that sounds wrong  )

I need T to meet dogs separately over the space of a few weeks so she can get used to seeing the odd dog on a lead when she is too.

Sooz - yep it was my Psycho Spice, she's lovely really :) just winding up the guy who was trying to have a quiet drink in the corner. He did the complete wrong thing and looked at her while she was laid down being quiet. As soon as she realised he was paying her attention, she was convinced it was time to play

Hey Lotti, we'll always be happy to meet up, but as you know the Chocador will probably bounce about a bit if I make him stay on lead. But we'll be happy to do it if need be.

Other wise I'll be looking after my Mum's dog in a few weeks (a cav) and she will totally ignore Takara, she has no interest whatsoever in other dogs!

The cav sounds great scoop. The chocador is lovely but best kept for offlead visits :D I think he may be too bouncy for Takara while she's on her lead (she's a bit nervy on her lead and I want to build her confidence).

We should definitely let them go for a romp around Graves Park again soon though - they loved it last time :D

I'll let you know when she arrives. She'll pay no attention to Takara at all, she's a right snooty madam!

Thanks Bailey's mum :)
Scoop - will she let Takara have a good sniff of her? Just so Takara realises that she can say hello to dogs without being scared?

Strix, sorry I got the wrong end of the stick... but with the mixture of dogs we have on the pets group I'm not convinced a park meet with all or most of them would be all that succesful...

Oh yes! She'll be completely ignored though. You have no idea how ignorant a dog can be until you've met this one.

She even manages somehow to ignore the Chocador, when he's bouncing all around her and pulling her ears:hihi: .

My Border Collie Tilly might be ok to meet Takara?
She is really timid and usually hides behind me when we come across other dogs so she could do with the socialising!

sam she actually sounds perfect as she will give Takara a chance to take the first step again. Will she be ok on the lead?

Takara's not aggressive or anything, she won't hurt Tilly, she just needs reassuring that meeting dogs on the lead is ok!

I'll do this - Graves is good for us, anytime

I have poppy but I dont know how she would react she may be too excitable rather than aggressive as she can be shy around bigger dogs too.

My dogs incredibly friendly so you could try with him. He's not a big dog or a small dog so he wouldn't be too intimidating and he's quite old but rather hyper. He's great with other dogs. We put him with my sisters dog and he kind of acts like a dad.

Lotti

Thanks guys, I'm not crossing you off my list if you have excitable dogs because they're our next step!
Jayms Fallen, we're going to move onto hyper male dogs soon :D She's worse with male dogs when on her lead so we will move onto males after the bitches :)
Thanks

Thanks meds... Now that T's a bit used to the three you walk, I might get her meeting them when she's on the lead because she already knows who's boss with them :)

ive got a couple that may be good, my lot are lurchers and greys but 2 of my lurchers are very laid back and unoffensive, they are used to meeting strange dogs due to the fostering we do so arnt particularly over interested or pushy will just have a sniff and thats it, i tend to stay away from parks as i keep mine on lead most of the time we tend to walk around our local area. anna.x.

Jess has made the necessary enquiries for organising the sponsored dog walk in aid of RainRescue so a few of us may meet up then

Tilly will be fine on her lead, I tend to leave her on it anyway around other dogs. I live near Malin Bridge/Wisewood so just let me no when and where you want to meet?
