Somebody told me there is a piano bar on London Road called Bukowski's. I drove down the other day and I couldnt see it- has it closed down?

Yes its closed down, now its a thai place I believe.

The owners said they couldnt make it pay when its punters were coming listening to live music and buying half of bitter all night.

That's a shame I have some funny memories from that place. Wondered why I hadn't heard of anything from there for a while.

I think its an absolute shame that Bukowskis closed down only to make way for
(Yawn!) yet another restaurnat in London Road that will probably be closed down
again in 6 months once people have been once.

Bukowskis was someplace different with a nice arty, bohemian atmosphere that I used
to like frequenting in the past. The people that ran it were very nice and friendly and
were willing to experiment with different things like unusual live arts, live mike and
poetry nights etc. - there is nothing like that in modern bland "regenerated" Sheffield now ..

Yes I used to buy more than half a pint there too as at the back of my mind I always feared
that if I didn't patronize it enough it would struggle to survive. Maybe possibly the one
mistake they made was trying too much to get into food with all those tables taking away
standing room and bar stool room thus possibly discouraging the very non-eating but drinking
bohemian crowd who would have kept it going.

At any rate it was a wonderful different place and I will miss it.

By the way does anyone know what Maggie Souter and her husband are going now - are they
going to get involved in any more business ventures of a similar vein - I would be
interested ... it would be ince for example to see them setting up a new place in Eccleshall
or somewhere...

I agree with Patrick totally; I hadn't lived in Sheffield long before I fell in love with Bukowski's; it was unique, and yet it was still friendly and in-keeping with that community feel. It was also somewhere to go to chill out or listen to the live singers and poets.

If anyone knows anywhere similar, let me know!

What's the Earl like ?, it looks like a dump from the outside.

The Earl is great, they have spent a fortune on the inside. It's all leather sofas, teak coffee tables, plants and plasma screens ect.
I put gigs on from time to time down there.

I'll give it a try them.
I always though it looked realy rough and scruffy. I think they need to give the outside a lick of paint too.

Hehe, I must admit the exterior of "the earl" does do no favours for the fine interior. And the painted-over logo is a bit of a shame too, but still, I'm liking the direction they're going in. It's no Bukowski's, but nice nonetheless.
