monticola   10 #1 Posted April 3, 2007 Hi everyone  Not sure of the appropriate place for this thread, but here sounds as good as any!  I am Secretary of the South Yorkshire Amphibian & Reptile Group (part of the ARG-UK National Network), and we are currently looking for new adder sites, typically to include areas such as Totley Moss, Wharncliffe, Loxley, Ringinglow, Stanage........the list goes on.  Obviously this is fairly sensitive information, but we would greatly appreciate any sightings you may have had in your local travels (send by Private Message) and these wuld then be investigated, and records added to the 'Make the adder count' project - now in its third year.  It would be great if you could help here  Thanks  John Newton South Yorkshire Amphibian & Reptile Group
 Share this content via...
scoobz   10 #2 Posted April 3, 2007 Blimey, you know how to help us attract new walkers to the Walking Group don`t you, the attraction of slippery snakes at the type of places we go walking! I know adders are not poisonous, but you`d be amazed how some people have phobias and are easily put off! Only joking really, we`ll keep our eyes open for you!. In fact, they`ll be as wide as they`ll go from now on! Hey, just realised, your name is Newton! This isnt a posting that should have gone out April 1st is it????? Guest   #3 Posted April 3, 2007 ...Hey, just realised, your name is Newton! This isnt a posting that should have gone out April 1st is it????? No, Mr Newton is on the contact page for the ARG . I'm sure he's heard all the jokes .  Excellent idea posting in the walking group. Browsing through the website, it looks like you've just missed an adder training day, which would have been useful for spotting the little beasts. Cheers  John No, I meant that the walkers on the group had missed it; that is, if it was open to non-members of the ARG. Sorry, my post was a bit confusing - I hadn't had my second coffee of the morning .
 Share this content via...
monticola   10 #6 Posted April 3, 2007 No, I meant that the walkers on the group had missed it; that is, if it was open to non-members of the ARG. Sorry, my post was a bit confusing - I hadn't had my second coffee of the morning . Ah right - see what you mean ; maybe its me that needs the extra caffeine ! As it happens, the adder training day was open to non-ARG members, and there are a couple more training days still to come in April/May for amphibians and grass snakes. Basically I was trying to get a response from folks who are not necessarily associated with ARG groups, but who could easily come across interesting new sites during their walking excursions  John
 Share this content via...
Nooka   10 #7 Posted April 3, 2007 Ive never seen an Adder before. When I was a kid we used to go in the woods near Treeton and Swallownest and would sometimes see grass snakes, but i thought snakes were very rare these days as i havent seen one since. When I was a kid we used to go in the woods near Treeton and Swallownest and would sometimes see grass snakes, but i thought snakes were very rare these days as i havent seen one since. Treeton and Swallownest areas are still good spots for grass snake !
 Share this content via...
monticola   10 #10 Posted April 3, 2007 I saw an adder last summer, I will PM you with the co-ordinates of where it was. I actually nearly stood on it, nearly jumped out of my skin:hihi: when I saw it. Thanks for your PM - the site you have given is definitely our most productive adder site, and several have been recorded there this year already. Now you have your 'eye in' its possible you may see others elsewhere (hopefully)  John
 Share this content via...
monticola   10 #11 Posted July 23, 2015 Hi everyone  Not sure of the appropriate place for this thread, but here sounds as good as any! I did actually post this request a few years ago on this site, and I am still trying to obtain potential records for new 'adder; sites on the local moors.....it would be interesting to hear of any records from the Burbage, Stanedge, Ringinglow and Blackamoor areas.  Obviously this is fairly sensitive information, but we would greatly appreciate any sightings you may have had in your local travels (send by Private Message) and these would then be investigated, and records added to the 'Make the adder count' project - now in its 11th year. I was told of a post in 2011 by A Frank Ryan that alluded to a potentailly new area for us, and if he reads this, it would be very useful to progress this sighting.  I hope that mayve just a few of you have come across adders whilst out walking, and I look forward to hearing from you   It would be great if you could help here  Thanks  John Newton South Yorkshire Amphibian & Reptile Group
 Share this content via...
