Can anyone tell me why the old Wilson Peck’s building, at the bottom of Barkers’ Pool, which used to be called “Beethoven House” is now called “Yorkshire House”?

It's highly speculative, but I believe that when Wilson Peck's moved out of the premises, Yorkshire Building Society moved in. You'll note that the building society is now round the corner toward The Fountain Bar (or whatever it's called). So I reckon the Yorkshire Building Society decided to give the building a name that would look better as an address on their stationery!

Which is a shame as Beethoven House sounds much nicer donchathink?

Ah...Pecks!!! I can recall going in there with my Dad to lookat the latest stereo systems......in those days they used to be called Radiograms and were in massive teak cabinets......lovely......we got one with a strange "pneumatic" lid that went down very slowly at first and then the last 4 inches went with a real crash straight onto your fingers!!! Its VHF radio as well.....wow!! And it played those funny round black disks and not the shiny silver ones........

I bought a set of Beyer Dynamic Headphones, DT440, from Pecks in 1977, and they cost 40 quid!! Still got 'em though. They are the biz

I do think Beethoven House is a nicer name, and it reflects the golden days of buying your City Hall concert tickets at Wilson Pecks. Bring it back I say..

Wilson Pecks brings back many memories.
I worked there for about 13 months in 1963/64 before leaving Sheffield to move just north of Derby.
