PaulTansley 24-07-2003, 08:55 I know its not much use to you but the only Japaneese one i've come across is at Darwin near Blackburn in Lancashire. pontious 24-07-2003, 10:27 Alternatively you could try a nice plate of pie, mash, peas and gravy served with lashings of Hedersons relish! alchresearch 27-07-2003, 19:34 Manchester has a couple of good ones. It also does Chinese and Thai food. I haven't been yet but I've heard it's pretty good. Uresu 07-08-2003, 09:58 There isnt one, but I am planning openning a Yakitori restaurant in Sheffield. silent__snow 14-08-2003, 07:37 Yakitori!? really??? wow- please do it. If you also sold ramen and kare raisu I'd come for lunch everyday. :D I really missing those foods. Personally I feel these sort of cheap popular japanese foods are much more suited to the british sense of taste than sushi. about skinny sumo.... it's changed- not sure what it is now- it's kept the same name- but I think now it's teppanyaki rather than sushi. Nottingham still has 'Higoi' a small restaurant on lenton blvd- which is what? 1 1/2 hours drive away... not too far away. mikey 14-08-2003, 08:27 whats yakitori, can someone explain mouse 14-08-2003, 22:47 Yeah, what is yakitori?? Are there any Indonesian restaurants in Yorkshire? I miss authentic Nasi goreng and Bami goreng. marcw 14-08-2003, 23:21 There's a fantastic Japanese restaurant in Nottingham on Mansfield Road called Ginza as well. It's a Teppanyaki and Sushi place - excellent food... I agree it's something that we in Sheffield are lacking. Still, we're catching up. Tony Ruscoe 21-08-2003, 12:59 I know you can get a "foot long" sandwich. Someone had one in our office and we were all in awe! vothod 26-08-2003, 18:38 anyone been 2 wagamamas? the foods gr8 i think they should open 1 in sheffield. Alley 22-01-2004, 13:31 Hi everybody I'm French and I have recently relocated to Sheffield... I have to say I am a Japanese food addict and apparently there are no Japanese restaurants in the Sheffield area... Is that really so? Cheers steelblade 22-01-2004, 13:41 I have good news for you. There is going to be on London Road. The signs have just gone up it's called something like Wasabi Sabi? Something like that anyway. I'm sure it will be open soon. Alley 22-01-2004, 13:49 That is fantastic news! Particularly as London road is close to where I live so it's even greater. I'll make sure to keep an eye open next time I drive to town (I'd better keep my 2 eyes open when I'm driving anyway!). Thanks! fnkysknky 22-01-2004, 14:26 Originally posted by steelblade I have good news for you. There is going to be on London Road. The signs have just gone up it's called something like Wasabi Sabi? Geoff 22-01-2004, 14:35 Try going to the new(ish) East One noodle bar, it's right in the city centre in the West One development. Rather than repeat myself (and others) check out this link: http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2805 I know a Japanese person who goes there from time to time and seems to rate them highly - as do I (although I'm not Japanese of course... doh) :) PS. Also check out the BBC review at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/southyorkshire/greedycow/food/cafes/east1.shtml steelblade 22-01-2004, 14:49 Yes it is the old Mango Tree. starchild 22-01-2004, 21:27 Does anyone know when Wagamama is coming to Sheffield *drool*:P theflyingfish 24-01-2004, 08:54 That is fantastic news about a japanese restaurant - Sheffield may yet catch up with other cities in terms of eating out! FunKyBaBe 24-01-2004, 13:09 that is really good news indeed! :D Been waiting for ages for a jap restaurant in sheffield. If i had the money, would have opened one ages ago! hope it's going to be good tho, not like the east one noodles at west one. Maybe I'm just picky with my food, but I went once and the food there was horrible and not authentic and quite pricey compared to other noodle bars. Maybe it's just me, since it got such raving reviews from other ppl. :) Bluelunar 29-01-2004, 21:05 little tokyo at leeds are actually done by a chinese family! and some of their food are even chinese food! Tony 30-01-2004, 06:44 There's a Japanese restaurant opening in the next few weeks in the former Mango Tree restaurant on London Road. Tony 30-01-2004, 06:45 Originally posted by vothod anyone been 2 wagamamas? the foods gr8 i think they should open 1 in sheffield. Try East One at West One. I understand that the owner, Roger Chung originally set up the Wagamama concept, and that East One is the next generation. paulmitchell 30-01-2004, 09:17 Looks like a Japanese restaurant is being fitted out on London Rd,near Abbeydale Rd junction. I've been there 3 times already, and its still really cheap, you're looking at £4.00/meal, Graet till this Sabi place opens and yeah, its openeing next week! Have fun XXX Bluelunar 05-02-2004, 22:35 i saw noodle inn's menu, its just similar to most chinese restaurants. japanese and chinese food are very different!! Trouncer 31-07-2004, 10:28 Not that impressed with Wasabi Sabi. It's very expensive in my opinion. I had the cheapest 'meat' set dish and that was £22 puls a bottle of Kirin beer and a bottle of water and it came to £27 total. maybe that's nothing to some but it's expensive in my books. Especially with the (little) amount you get. I suppose what your paying for is the cooking display which you get when you order Tapen Yaki (the set meal). Lots of food juggling and flames whooshing. The foods freshly cooked in front of you but such meagre amounts !! Good to watch but is it worth it all in the end ? I don't think so. What's anyone else think ? Alley 31-07-2004, 13:11 Yeah I agree. I have to admit I haven't experienced Wasabi Sabi yet and the reason for that IS the price. My friend and I did go in once but as we hadn't booked we couldn't get a table, which was probably a good thing as we hadn't had a look at the menu by then! I still would like to go because I haven't had proper Japanese food in 8 months now :'(((( !! Was the food good though? Let me know. Has anybody heard of other Japanese restaurants, even (way) out of town. I'd be ready to go to Leeds, York or Manchester!! ultracynic 02-08-2004, 08:43 I can highly recommend Little Tokyo in Leeds which is behind the House of Fraser store Alley 02-08-2004, 08:53 Originally posted by ultracynic I can highly recommend Little Tokyo in Leeds which is behind the House of Fraser store Thank you for that. It's more like snack food than proper meals. Nice enough but really not worth that much money. killerbabe 03-05-2005, 19:26 Does anyone know of any Japanese restaurants that do the buffet sushi thing, you know with the belt that goes round with all the food on and you take what you want? marmite 03-05-2005, 19:35 london RD? there deffo is one in sheffield, try yell.com jaki_fruit 03-05-2005, 19:41 theres WasabiSabi on london road. they dont have the conveyabelt but they do have a little sushi bar and a teppanyaki area! ide reconmend it... its the only japanese place in sheffield... oh and theres east ocean pacific cafe thing down at the moor... but i wouldnt call that japanese. The Ocean on Matilda street is very good - I have had some very good meals there. They do a variety of East Asian cuisine. When I have been there the waiters/watresses have either been Malaysian Chinese or 'BBC' (British born Chinese). amelie 13-06-2005, 13:23 any decent japanese / sushi restaurants in city center. only found wasabisabi and seems a bit pricey. richynomates 13-06-2005, 13:32 I think WasabiSabi is the only choice! We appear to be the largect city in the world without a single Sushi Loop!! I'd love to open the empty building next to Ruskins as a Yo! Sushi... Greenback 13-06-2005, 13:42 Try the East Ocean Cafe on Matilda Street, tel: 0114 278 1888. They do Japanese, Thai and Chinese food. nick2 13-06-2005, 13:43 Wasabisabi is fantastic, you get loads of sushi for your money. Also try the deep fried soft-shelled crab, it looks like a giant spider in tempura batter but it tastes out of this world. I'm not keen on Yo! Sushi, you have to wait ages for your favourite thing to trundle past and some git always beats you to it. ultracynic 14-06-2005, 13:46 Yo! is to sushi what Subway is to sandwiches firecracker 09-02-2006, 17:25 Does anyone know when Wagamama is coming to Sheffield *drool*:P I don't know, but they're opening in Leeds this summer. MTheo 09-02-2006, 17:33 my japanese friend went to wasabisabi (or however u spell it) she said they were 90% chinese people half pretending to be japanese as they had learnt some phrases. seems a bit of a con doesnt it lol. she didnt mind it but said it didnt really taste that traditional. susiepoosie 09-02-2006, 17:47 Love Japanese food and although really enjoyed Wasabisabi would love a yo sushi to open here. You can pick whatever dish you want and it doesn't have to be that expensive if you only want a couple of things! Have resorted to buying the packs from M&S but not as nice as going out to eat and Wasabisabi quite expensive Phanerothyme 09-02-2006, 17:54 any decent japanese / sushi restaurants in city center. only found wasabisabi and seems a bit pricey. Try their set lunchtime menu - it's good value. My favourite client takes me there for lunch now and again, yum. Bago 09-02-2006, 19:16 my japanese friend went to wasabisabi (or however u spell it) she said they were 90% chinese people half pretending to be japanese as they had learnt some phrases. seems a bit of a con doesnt it lol. she didnt mind it but said it didnt really taste that traditional. lol... Well, she isn't wrong there. Let's just say that, there isn't such a thing as an 'authentic' foreign restaurant that will have foreigners working as waitresses/waiters. It's never the case, anywhere. All I know is that a proper 'sushi chef' by Japan's standard are highly sort after and cost an arm and leg to employ, (just like adim sum chef for Chinese cuisines) and sushi in Japan is a BIG thing. They make the sushi from fresh ingredients, and cut all sushi in a symmetrical way. It takes years to learn how to boil the rice alone. Don't ask me why... *shrugs* They also have different grades of rice that are only eaten in Japan alone, and never imported. So, let's just say that, your Japanese friend will *not* be easily impressed by any Japanese restaurant in the UK. Oh, maybe except for 'Nobu' In London. I think the chef is a Japanese guy too. Some guy trained under him, I think he recently moved to a restaurant in Leeds. They just won an award as well, according to Leed's Time magazine. Now that, I wouldn't mind trying. Wasabisabi's costs are 'okay' price for sushi, cos in Japan, it cost I think 80p per piece of sushi (when I went there once). At the lower end of their conveyor belt type too. The standard of living is so high there that, the chefs from that country won't work abroad, cos it's kinda beneath them. It's more prestigious in Japan. Yo sushi is not that nice. It's quite manufactured, I'm sorry to say. Sushi rice should be kept at a certain temperature. I dunno how they manage to preserve rice that cold, but... I don't tend to buy sushi from a fridge. Cos you're just eating cold rice, which is not right. |
