View Full Version : URGENT advice needed on discount neutering

Ok, those that know me know we are responsible pet owners, so in a situation here Im not sure how to solve and where.

we do some work for our breed rescue group. today, I have been to pick up two young dogs, whos owner no longer wants them (basically impulse buy and now found out what hard work they really are). normally, these dogs would be transported to one of the groups foster and assessment homes, where they will be neutered, chipped and recieve any other action needed. this is planned for sunday and cannot do it before then. However, in this case, both these dogs are entire, and the owner announced when I collected them this afternoon that the bitch is in season and her and the male tied yesterday! AAAAAAARGH!. I bit my tongue at the comment of free pups in the bargain and made an expedient exit with the dogs before i smacked the guy. Pups here are absolutely NOT an option, as quite apart from these two being unregistered, too young to breed at 15 months old and had no health checks THEY ARE BROTHER AND SISTER!.
Time is of the essence here!. Were this to happen with our dogs, we would have the 'morning after' injection given, however, these two will be neutered anyway, by the vet that does this at discount price in London near the planned fosterer. I enquired with our vet, but he WILL NOT neuter a bitch till 3 months out of season. I know it can be done, from my days as a vet nurse, as was done regularly on rescues. another issue is the cost!, the morning after jab would set me back £70, neutering another £120. this would ultimately be paid back by the breed welfare, but as they dont as yet hold charitable status, this is mony they can ill afford when they get neutering done virtually for free normally.
I *think* as we are in recipit of working tax credit, we might be able to go via the PDSA, who offer discount neutering, but try as i might, all i get when I ring the sheffield clinic is an engaged tone.
Can anyone 'in the know' help me out on this one? as we have about another 48hrs to find a vet willing to spay this bitch at reasonable cost once this girl is out of season (I believe the practice i worked for specified 2 weeks out) before times up for the morning after jab we want to avoid giving.
allowing the pregnancy to continue under these circumstances is not an option as apart from the potential problems to mum and pups, what the breed welfare do not need right now are inbred, unregistered pups from non healthchecked parents.

HELP!!!!!!!!!

Oooh... I don't know how you bit your lip.

I know that Hallam Vets do spay possibly pregnant bitches but I don't know how much for. I doubt it'll be cheaper than £120.

I have been told that the morning after injection isn't very safe at all though and bitches have still continued with the pregnancy after having it, but produced deformed pups :(

I'll see what I can find out for you though.

For PDSA i think you have to be in reciept of either council tax/housing ben or income support sorry to be the bearer of bad news
Have you asked at Abbey vets? they seem to be cheapish for neutering and that kind of thing, i do hope you get something sorted, how iresponsible are some people... makes your blood boil doesn't it?

I think what we need here is a vet sympathetic enough to help out a rescue group :(. I Know the morning after jab comes with potential problems and why we are keen to avoid it if possible, particularly when a spay is planned, as its just adding to the rescues expense. that £70 will feed a good few dogs for several weeks.

I've tried messengering her with the link to this thread, but I suspect she's either busy or wandered away from the computer (which happens alot)

Try texting

TBH lindsey, dont think so, we had it all planned out, till this plonker landed this one on me!. think its going to be a case of ringing around the vets and crossing my fingers tomorrow that we find one willing to do a spay in 2-3 weeks time, or else going to have to take her for the jab on wed (and fri)

Black velvet i know the vets on abbeydale road and london road accept the rspca vouchers for neutering so they may be sympathetic. You could try the rspca or the dogs trust and see if they will issue you with a voucher for the neutering if you explain the circumstances. I know the rspca are having a couple of the free sessions again for vouchers/flee/wormer etc. but they are in leeds and hull and not sure when they are on but would mean it was free. I think rain rescue use the dogs trust for subsidised neutering she may be able to help you speak to them though. Good luck what horrible circumstances and those poor dogs.

RainRescue does use Dogs Trust vouchers for spaying as that's the one we got when we got Lilly from her. Personally I would sit down with the Yellow Pages and try every vets I could think of aswell to see if you get one that is willing to help. It certainly sounds like quite a predicament you have there. I'm sorry there isn't really anything I can do to help.

what sort of dogs are these then - are they your big fluffy beasties?
did the people sign them over to the rescue?

I could try phoning my contact at the dt tomorrow - and see if they can help.
don't suppose they gave you any money to relinquish the dogs did they? Many rescues do ask them to make a donation now - purely due to being stitched up with this sort of stuff - or them dumping cos they know there is some sort of bil in the pipeline.
Not something thats enforced if the people are genuine and can't afford it, but should be something to think about when people just wanting to dump as these seem to be. Funny how they can always afford the hundreds of pounds to buy the dogs but not for the voluntary rescue groups to take them off them.
Anyway - back to the neutering subject.
It is very risky to neuter a dog in season - and so many won't do it. So, I would phone the PDSA for advise from their vets tomorrow - or one of the vets that are on our list (see website for staffy neutering vouchers)
ask 2 or 3 of them for their advise - but ask them to ask a vet - not just reception.
give me a call on my mobile tomorrow if you want to.
I picking half a dozen dogs up but will be round on my mobile

look on the bright side - at least you know about it - they could hae not said anything, and left it - then it would have been a nightmare.

Yes RR, they have been relinquished on paper, so officially our concern now and they are the fuffy beasties, two of them, and apart from this cropping up, a couple of nice dogs in good condition. TBH, we dont ask for a donation unless the dogs require vaccinations, we do ask for at least some of that cost where possible, these two are, however vaccinated and never crossed my mind to ask about donation towards neutering as we dont normally. I have found out the vets can 'abort' at 45 days, but really dont like the sound of it and carries a far higher risk of a pyo etc than both morning after or just neutering. I do feel bad about considering destoying this poor girls potential pups, but have to remember they are very likely to come with a shedload of problems and unlikely to be the healthiest examples around. so in the long run, it really is better all round. going to see if the RSPCA will send out a voucher and get the phone book out now.

Fantastic news - thats great of them.

last thing we need is more unwanteds.
So obviously the vets feel its ok to get done - will she have finished her season by then do you think?

BlackVelvet

going on previous owners maths, she should just about be out of season by then. Being done through Highfield, who accept the free neutering vouchers. vets advice there was that it really does not matter where in the bitches cycle the spay is done, they will actually do them whilst in season. I think in this girls case, the sooner the better, before she actually gets all the hormone signals telling her shes pregnant and ending up with a phantom
have to say a well done to the RSPCA on this one for being very helpful.
on the positive side, these two dogs have excellent temperaments, particularly the male (good job cos hes a big lad!) sure we will have no problem matching them up with suitable new owners.

ok
if you want us to put a link up to your rescue details on the rain rescue site - let me know -
we do put links up to reputable breed rescues and we are getting over 1000 hits per day on the rain site which is excellent news for rescue dogs
I could also chip them for you if you like (or get them done when they are under) or do you have someone that chips?
