View Full Version : Sheffield Music Scene
We've recently set up a (myspace) website help cross-promote bands in the South Yorkshire region called Sheffield Music Scene (http://www.myspace.com/sheffieldmusicscene).
Each week (hopefully) we'll be profiling a different band or venue from the region. We've already completed features on Harrisons (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=167338344&blogID=240567134&MyToken=cd73994a-d4fd-44f7-a524-97e2e65a0a7e), Bromheads Jacket (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=167338344&blogID=243371446&MyToken=d2618fe2-8e1c-43c9-a1a3-5ca02dbc0900), and Little Man Tate (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=167338344&blogID=246922390&MyToken=a50d5a8f-aae7-4214-9e4e-d4fa5d725ea6) but there are plans to feature all the larger sheffield bands over the next few months, hopefully coinciding the feature with releases / tours. Next week Gas Club (http://www.myspace.com/gasclub) (who are supporting Arctic Monkeys on their new tour) and hopefully Tiny Dancers (http://www.myspace.com/tinydancers) the week after.
As well as that we hope to provide regular music updates / news from the region. Longer term when we've got more friends we'll also be doing features on the best of the smaller / up-coming bands. We hope you'll check us out and if you like the idea come and be our friend.
If you'd like to contribute to the site in any way - i.e. Content / Design then please get in contact as all the help we can get will be appreciated. Please check out our MISSION STATEMENT blog for full details.
drinkingman 02-04-2007, 00:54 Good Site, I've bookmarked it and will keep dropping in. Check out DURBAN, a good local band.
ega05jeb 02-04-2007, 01:22 Just indie / rock music?
Yes and no. Initially it will be bands in this genre as the biggest / most successful bands are in this genre but we're not limitting ourselves to strictly that genre of music.
fatpiggymc 04-04-2007, 14:03 could give a mention to the lads playing the redstripe comp on friday night at the boardwalk
We've completed our profile on Gas Club and it can be read here (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=167338344&blogID=249577918&MyToken=dd8fa4b1-d18d-4941-9b20-7d219b4e8557) - this time we've gone multimedia thanks to come photo's by mark Tighe. This and our previous profiles on Little Man Tate, Bromheads Jacket and Harrisons can still be viewed on our blog.
And whilst we're talking about Harrisons so more news... their next single, Dear Constable, will be out on the 28th of May 2007, will feature three different b-sides and will be available to download or buy on cd and 7". Dear Constable is the first track off their Debut album: 'No Fighting In the War Room' released on June the 11.
Also announcing a release is Reverend And The Makers with their debut single 'Heavyweight Champion Of The World' on may 28th. They are also doing a full UK tour details of which can be found on their website http://www.iamreverend.com/ (www.iamreverend.com/)
On friday night why not pop down to The Boardwalk to see "The Gentlemen + The Speakeasy + The Stoops + Tarka Dawn" at REDSTRIPE MUSIC AWARDS.
Next week we hope to profile Tiny Dancers, and after that we've got plans for Little Man Tate @ Astoria review, profiles on Reverend And The Makers and Stoney plus a Q/A with Jailbird (Stoney's next Single) director Carl Timms. If anyone wishes to contribute please get in touch and thanx to all of those who already have contributed.

why a myspace on the kind of style that gets so much hype already?... any issue of nme or sandman can cover all these bands and lick their arses plenty. Durban as mentioned are one example of trying something different (although a bit of indie style pops in they mix it up with other influences) but how about Rise to Addiction, Mybe and Sikora... 3 bands that do Metal, Punk and .... err.. acoustic rock... 3 dif styles, all sheffield bands and all so much more interesting and talented.
I take it you don't approve then. As we've said we're covering all obvious suspects to build up a decent friend base then covering some of the smaller bands. And as far as I'm aware NME have not done anything on Gas Club for example, though they have had some press in Sandman. But instead of being negative why not do something yourself and help contribute! It's not as easy doing something constructive, it's much easier to criticise.

I was constructive.. i gave you 3 names of bands doing something original that you could feature. .. id also add 'bison' to that list..and I would say Tim Pare but he has moved to london now...but if picked up he will do very well. I've seen enough music around sheffield to know the type of music that gets more coverage and some amazing bands that dont even get 1 line in Sandman..i just thought doing something like this you could follow a different route and show people Sheffield music is healthy...and not just for arctic monkey clones.

You didn't appear very constructive, your comments were quite negative. As we stated we are planning on getting round to doing the same for a number of maller / unsigned bands... but thanks for the band suggestions we'll bare them in mind.

I approve! Anything that promotes Sheffield bands/music is good by me. It's all a matter of musical taste anyway. I'm an old soulie git and I like 'Lennie', but don't forget the likes of Grey Cooper Love Party (funk), Julian Jones (singer/songwriter), Russell Weaver (singer/songwriter), Kev Quick (singer/songwriter). There's room for everyone...
Cheers we'll be sure to check them out.
It's a slow process, there's so many bands in and around Shef' it's going to take a while before the content of our site represents a good cross-section.
This weeks profile (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=167338344&blogID=252204739&MyToken=d51cd836-bd2b-4872-856f-6fae8e6ba4a8) is on Tiny Dancers who's debut single "I Will Wait For You" is still available in shops. They are also currently at the start of a joint headline UK Tour with Ghosts; dates include Sheffield Leadmill (5th May), Leeds Cockpit (9th May), and Barnsley Lucorum (18th Mar).
Thanx to Nicol (http://www.myspace.com/nicolgarnon) for letting us use her photo's along side our profile on Tiny Dancers.
Just in case anyone didn't know Arctic Monkeys release 'Brianstorm' on 16th April followed by the album 'Favourite Wost Nightmare' on 23rd April.
More news from Harrisons... their debut album "no fighting the the war room" is out June 11th preceded by the single "dear constable" on May 28th. And they've recently announced two Sheffield dates... one at a secret location on on 28th April and at Leadmill on 2nd June.
Also we recomend you check out Alvarez Kings (http://www.myspace.com/alvarezkings) at one of their many gigs over the next few months in the region. We picked up a couple of CD's from a recent gig and they're pretty damned good.
Officially the place to be this Saturday is Threads @ DQ as they celebrate their 1st Birthday; Gandhi Warlhol warming up with some Northen Soul, Chris McClure stomping the dancefloor & finishing with residents... all for on £4!!!!
Over the next few weeks we've got planned profiles on Reverend And The makers and Stoney; and interviews with Carl Timms diretor of the video (Jailbird) from Stoney, and the man behind Threads @ DQ will be telling us why you won't want to miss a Saturday night this month!
This weeks and previous features can still be read on our blog section.

tiny dancers are very very good, remind me of 'the travelling wilburies' if anyone can remember them.
the new revered and the makers track is getting hype but i think its standard indie with a 80's pop remix.
i have seen most of the bands you mentioned... i dont just form judgements coz of their style... but harrisons bored me silly! mind you i seemed to be in the minority as the rest of crowd were loving it... my ticket was free thou so i didnt feel too ripped off :hihi:
also saw alvarez kings before they changed their name.... energetic performances, and some potential....if they catch onto a good support slot they will most likely do well.

Another vote for Tim here. He's a really lovely bloke as well, have seen him at the Green Room a few times and then went to his memorial hall gig last year. He is excellent at what he does (acoustic reflective songs) and he deserves to do well. He got some good press in the Mail on Sunday at Christmas. Although he's not originally from Sheffield, we adopted Stoney and he's not here anymore so we should adopt Tim :D
I just think it's good to celebrate the fact that on Thursday there was any number of gigs i could have attended; Mark Morriss at the ledders, Jack Penate at Plug and then The Headliners from Barnsley at West Street live. (I was however at the theatre :D )
Our music scene is thriving, there are some great gigs going off in our smaller venues which is getting the bigger names here too and also playing smaller acts from further afield. No longer do we have to traipse to Manchester to watch a smaller band, they come here! This is all down to the excellent music we are providing here in Sheffield.
Thanks for the add on myspace Sheff music scene!
Thanks for the support and suggestions. Although it may not seem like it we are listening to you views and we are listening to the bands you recomend, but it's so time-comsuming (we're only doing this in our spare time) it will take a while before we actually get round to do features on the these bands but we will eventually get round to it.
As we've said if anyone wishes to contribute please let us know as this would help speed things up if we've got more people helping out.

"I Will Wait For You" by the Tiny Dancers. They're our featured band of the week. Our tune will change each week to coincide with the band we're featuring. It's their latest single and still available in shops and download I believe...

Hi,
we've got about 5 pages of friends requests to work through. We're trying to listen to each band before we accept so we at least know what they sound like, but we are prioriting Sheffield & SY bands, then UK bands (and ignoring US bands pretty much). Give us a add and we'll get round to listening and if there's anything you'd like us to add to our calendar or anything else then send us a myspace message.
We've posted a profile of Stoney (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=167338344&blogID=255325128&MyToken=fffc24dd-5cf9-4e83-83dd-de2acd91fe55) and also a review of Stoney at SXSW (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=167338344&blogID=255727229&MyToken=fffc24dd-5cf9-4e83-83dd-de2acd91fe55) including photo's and videos.
We've completed our review of Arctic Monkeys @ Leadmill - 21st & 22nd April (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=167338344&blogID=257868210&MyToken=226d0a18-2e68-49eb-ae40-b8d4adc1ac31) including setlists, photo's, what happened after the shows, and FREE DOWNLOADS!!!! 19 High quality live tracks from the Arctic Monkeys gig at Astoria on 13th April 2007 that was broadcast by Radio 1.
We've also put 4 free AM downloads on our mainpage... 3 cover versions by AM and a cover of an AM track by Sugerbabes.
And for an alternative perspective (by someone who's actually trained in journalism) one of our friends writes reviews for the Leadmill site... you can read a review of the Sunday night by Taras here:
http://www.leadmill.co.uk/db/reviews.php?review_id=32
Coming up next week is a profile on Reverend And The Makers but in the mean time you can download a high quality live version of Heavyweight Champion from club60:

We've posted a review of Milburn at The Arches in Barnsley written by our friend Sean and with pictures by Mark Tighe. Read it here (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=167338344&blogID=260568093&MyToken=0f8951f1-1342-42a6-b700-13e6d9e1ede6).
On Huw Stephens Radio 1 show this week (Wednesday night / Thursday morning) there was a bit of a Sheffield special featuring Slow Club in session and two DIY Labels of the Week - Phantom Power and Thee Sheffield Phonographic Society.

Sally-Ann 07-06-2007, 17:00 This sounds really good but very much for younger musicians and bands. My b/f is a bass player looking to join or form a prog rock band for fun. Anyone know the best place for him to look as he is new to Sheffield?
Ta very much!

K_Vincent 08-03-2010, 14:01 My boyfriends band are looking to do a small tour around the sheffield, lincoln, wakefield etc area at the end of April.
They hail from luton in Bedfordshire and i just came across your thread and was wondering if you could help us out at all with getting them a few gigs there?
They do have a myspace (what band doesn't) that I can't actually post the full address on here due to this sites rules but you can find them by putting myspace.com/ourdivide. They are a fantastic up and coming band with so much talent it makes me giddy!
They are a 6 piece band with dual vocals from two of the best front men I have seen. Their lively set makes everyone want to join in and their interactive banter makes them a band that everyone will love!
They have gigged in sheffield before in september 09 so they aren't complete strangers and their bassist is actually from there.
if you could give me some idea of how to get them on to a decent bill it would be greatly appreciated.
I look forward to hearing from you.
