Has anybody had their hair chemically straightened? And if so, who did you use in Sheffield? I'm interested in getting mine done but I don't know where does it and if there is any risk of my hair falling out :o

hi

i had mine done a couple of years ago after having a tragic perm it really does ruin your hair, but im sure most hair dresses will do it its just the same solution i think as a perm just minus the rollers n they pull it straight, but if your hair int that bad i would not have it done

me and my mate used to do it ourselves using a perm solution, just follow instructions on box but instead of rollers keep combing the hair straight. plenty of conditioner afterwards.

Boots are now selling hair straightening kits for £14.99 ! Ive been straightening my hair for about 17 years now, but have never believed that *chemical straightening* will work. I'm considering trying out this kit, apparantly it IS just like getting a perm without the rollers.

Let me know if you have it done (at home or professionaly) and if it works !! i will post if i choose to do it, though im getting my hair cut and dying it tomorrow, so it will be a month or so before i subject it to anything else !

I have mine done at headstrong on Abbeydale Road, it lasts about 6 months and my hair has never been in better condition, its the wella straightening system or something like that, and its not the really smelly chemicals. I love it and would highly recommend it

Caitsmum, can I ask - do you have coloured hair - I've got highlighted hair and I'm also worried in case it can't be done on bleached hair.

Though, I think I'm going to stop worrying about it and just go for it!!!

I would say to anyone considering chemical straigtening - go to a professional.

Those Boots straightening kits can be a bit dangerous. I used it - did the strand test and my hair was great - really straight so decided to go ahead with full head. Read the instruction which said do not use if you hair is bleached. I never thought anything of it. Put the stuff on and within minutes my hair had started to give off heat and basically melting. My hair went the same way that body hair does when using hair removal cream.

I very quickly had to wash the stuff off and make an emergancy trip to the hairdressers. I realised that six months before I had bleached the top of my hair to put bright red in - but then dyed over it with a dark colour.

I ended up having to have quite short layers put in the top part of my hair.

So if you are intending to use the Boots straigtening kits - be very careful. I was just unlucky not to have realised that it would affect it this way.

My hairdresser said they could do it without the damage - so if in doubt go to them!

try loreal extenso it is the best, I had it done and it leaves your hair very straight and shiny. I think a lot of salons do it, my hair seemed in better condition for it. It def beats straighteners, they really dry your hair out if you over use them.

I paid around £50-60 for it, and that included a cut. :)

its the same as perming solution and its can ruin your hair but just treat it like you would if u had a colour or perm.

u can get it from most hairdressers

ive been doing my hair myself for years and its fine, i use the perm type, the ones designed for black (afro) hair are the best they are stronger, theres a new shop on abbeydale road opened called a b c they sell black hair products and have the straighteners, you cant go wrong using them cos you want it straight, its when you try to get a good curl thats the hardest

Had mine done about three weeks ago, at the hair n nail studio, opp Park Hotel, highly recommend it, mine was coloured before I had it straightened, had a semi permanent colour put on after the straightening, now all I have to do is wash n blow dry, brilliant and cost £35 including the colour!

How curly is your hair though, naturally ? Mines is proper curls, like a new perm (when wet). Takes me about 1/2 hour to blow dry, which straightens it out a bit but it's HUGE, then about 35/40 mins to straighten.

Does chemical straightening make your hair straight when wet ??

My hair is very thick and coarse and i've got lots of it! In a morning it takes 20 mins to blow dry and 10 mins to straighten and my hair is only short. Chemical straightening does make your hair straight when wet. It has also thinned mine out. It is fantastic - I feel like a different person. Can't recommend it enough!!!!

I have got two hairdressers one who styles in doing hair straightening for afro/european hair she is fab and also my other hairdresser she speacialises in the Yuko hair straightening. Jennifer Aniston started the rage with the Yuko back in the day when she was in friends and her hair was worth it and now celebs like Gwen Paltrow and Madonna have it done. If it is good enough for them it is defo good enough for me.

The Yuko is defo worth it (no pun intended) but some people think it is expensive however I personally dont because it is worth it. Cost is between £120-180 depending on how long your hair is. Only thing I was not keen on with the afro relaxes was after a while it leaves your hair very dry and thin.

With the Yuko your hair really does feel soft and silky, with a really good shine and it lasts upto to 8-9 months unlike the other hair relaxes which last upto five months.

Where at?
My issue with having it done is:
£300 for the first time is fine, but then they say you have to get the re-growth done every 6 weeks (I would not get it done that often).
£200 for the regrowth is to much money in my opinion. What if I hated my staright hair, it would take years for the strightness to grow out!

Eh?
If your dad is the owner then why not wait until you see him and get the full facts of what sort of condition the person hair has to be in, hence you could give factual information which would benefit the thread?
I don't even understand what the second bit of your sentence means. You made it known your dad own the salon, so if you are going to represent the salon, at least provide knowledge which is factual.
Better still, why not get your dad to write a reply on this thread, there is a demand for the service and at £200/300 per session, it could mean good revenue for the salon.

I live with him and most things about hair belive it or not i do know since i have been brought up with family who are hairdressers...He did also say its hard to tell as they have to see the persons hair because what one can do to one persons hair might not happen to anothers.

Why are you still continuing this? As you live with him, just ask him does the hair have to be virgin or is coloured hair OK.
There is a difference between bleached and coloured hair.
Can you just not ask him what are the limitations. I would not book/they should not do such a procedure without a consultation and a strand test.
Ask him what system they use and i can search on the internet.
Why don't you tell him about this thread and get him to write something.... I do not live hear Hairband and I did about the procedure what the receptionist was useless, said that the lady that does it will call me, but they never did.

Coloured hair is usualy fine but its best to have it tested on one piece of hair as you can still get complications etc.
Who was the receptionist you spoke to because if it was abit ago it is very likely that one of them doesnt still work for us and i think i may know which one it could of been.
Because he isnt in the country that is why geez.

In other words what it says on the website is right but WE as a company have to cover our back by saying that complications can arise
