View Full Version : Proposed Musicians group
How many people are interested in a musicians group? It was mentioned a few months ago, but nothing came of it.
Basic requirements:
We will need a couple of people to volunteer as group leaders (in addition to me).
The group should have a Sheffield bias (which it will anyway)
The group should also not conflict with other forums e.g. "Evenings out"
Just a place to ask questions, post links to jam nights, places to have repairs done and buy consumables (strings etc etc) without having to wade through masses of posts.
What do people think?
And maybe create a birthplace for new ensembles?! :)
BasilRathbon 28-03-2007, 12:09 It would be nice to have a "musicians swap shop" facility along the lines of "you sing on my track, I'll do a remix of yours".
Most of the groups have one or two leaders. It's an easy enough task. You could take it on yourself, if you have the time :) .
Banjo Griner 28-03-2007, 12:10 I'd join. I know a few things about banjers, luthiers and kazoos.
And not many people can or will admit to that.
As I said I will volunteer, just need one or two other people(I can only access web at work) to volunteer who pref. have access in the evenings.
Thanks for the favourable response everybody. Better get back to work, something has hit the fan by the bucket load!!!!
jenniflower 28-03-2007, 12:28 Sounds like it will be a good group. I think there should be one
BlankFrack 28-03-2007, 13:22 Sounds spiffing.
Hope I don't earn an instant ban for having a pink Hello Kitty guitar!
drinkingman 28-03-2007, 13:28 I think it's a great idea. Let's hear it for the musos!
SleepyHead 28-03-2007, 13:55 Hear, hear! I think it's a great idea.
I'd be interested in doing a bit of moderating if no-one else has already bagsied it.
Banjo Griner 28-03-2007, 13:59 pink Hello Kitty guitar
If it's a Flying V it could well be the coolest git in the history of the Earth.
SleepyHead 28-03-2007, 14:51 Ooh I dunno - I reckon this (http://www.elevenstrings.com/) has got to come somewhere near the top of my all-time coolest guitars ...
Banjo Griner 28-03-2007, 15:17 Looks like fun. Let's get it jamming with the 12-string bass (http://www.12stringbass.com/WishBass12.html).
Hear, hear! I think it's a great idea.

I will put your name forward to the main mods along with anyone else who volunteers. They get to choose!!
SleepyHead 28-03-2007, 15:57 What a fantastic instrument! It's almost as intricate as the Baroque lute (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Bar-lute8-ref.jpg)!
Ein Feste Burg, anyone?
SleepyHead 28-03-2007, 15:58 I will put your name forward to the main mods along with anyone else who volunteers.
Thanks.
They get to choose!!
Fine by me. It is their site after all, and it's nice to maintain some illusion of control. ; )
Till Man 28-03-2007, 16:05 Looks like fun. Let's get it jamming with the 12-string bass (http://www.12stringbass.com/WishBass12.html).
I WANT ONE!!!!!
Xircon,
Sadly I cannot commit to moderating as time will not allow. Rest assured though that I will be a regular visitor.
Yeah a muso group is a good idea, a good place to exchange info and so on. I'm amazed by the poll results, had no idea there were so many flugelhorn players in Sheffield.
I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who would like more information about the sort of things involved in being a group leader, if the group is set up (and it's still an 'if' at the moment).
Please also include a little bit about your musical interests and activities, and your times of availability on the forum- it helps to have group leaders who complement each others' experiences (I would like to point out that it isn't important whether someone is a really good musician for them to be an enthusiastic group leader or contributor though).

Well I don't know about being a group leader, but I'll tell y'all a bit about myself anyway.
I'm a guitar player (who isn't these days?) grade 8 ABRSM (2 years ago), currently working on getting to ABRSM diploma standard. I've also taught myself music theory (grade 5 ABRSM).
The last couple of years I've done quite a lot of writing (although it's more like song-writing & arranging than pure guitar instrumental music). I also do a bit of teaching (guitar) in my spare time. And I'm teaching myself counterpoint and composition to improve my writing skills a bit.
Although I'm concentrating most of my attention on music theory & writing I'm interested in most things musical really and wouldn't mind somewhere to have a chinwag with other local musicians 'bout "stuff". Don't mind if it's all chit-chat or arrangements to go down the pub - sitting on yer own in a room writing music or practicing is a lonesome thing to do!
Classic Rock 29-03-2007, 11:19 I kinda suggested something like this when the groups were first pulled together but it fell on deaf ears. Great idea! Within the group it would be good to have a section for bands looking for gigs, bands seeking musicians, promoters seeking bands, etc.
SleepyHead 29-03-2007, 14:18 I forgot to say - I'd be available for moderation a couple of nights a week, perhaps a little more, and maybe even some weekends.
Jabberwocky 29-03-2007, 14:21 So can we be expecting a new band in the charts in the near future? The Forumers? Singing "I got a brand new jar of Hendersons" a la the wurzels?
SleepyHead 29-03-2007, 15:09 Bagsy not impersonating Adge Cutler.
I refuse to be in any band with 'THE' in their title.. apart from that i would contribute and maybe help out on the mod side if needed.
I play guitar to grade 0, dont know any music theory and dont know any scales.
my mad ramblings can be found here www.myspace.com/cobwebsinmymind (vocals coming when I chace singers down)
Firemansam 29-04-2007, 18:37 Are we talking electric or acoustic, music clubs, pub sessions, that sort of thing. Maybe starting a new folk or session meet, I'd be up for that.
I'm sure that all sorts of music would be welcomed (assuming that Geoff gives the group the go-ahead, of course!).

There's lots of folk sessions already aren't there? Even if I'm too chicken to go to any :D
id really like a guitar learning group.. i see someone here already stating he teaches..
if we had a location (for everyones ease) that is free or cheap on a saturday/sunday afternoon for a few hours and everyone chips in a couple of quid then he would still get paid the same and it could be fun.. obviously all the dif standards could make it a bit more of a headache but im sure everyone would muck in to teach others things.. i know I could do with some pointers in the more boring aspects (playing by ear is a big flaw of mine)
i did one at chesterfield college a while back and was quite fun.. although it was VERY basic.. i mean.. 'this is a guitar.. these are strings.. thats lesson 1 over with' :hihi:
I'd join the group. I can lend a hand with any sound technology stuff.

Can't ever be too many, and get yourself along to one. It's good fun

I'd say the hardest part is finding a suitable venue for something like that

*stunned silence*
...
WTF!?
SleepyHead 15-05-2007, 14:05 Here's some footage (http://www.manzer.com/web/index.php?thisid=158) of Pat Methney playing that bonkers instrument.
The ultimate in self-accompaniment!
Sooo ... how much support do we need for a musicians group?
Still waiting to hear back from Geoff about group, Medusa thinks we have enough support, so will find out sooner rather than later I would think.

WTF!?
Do they do a left-handed version:hihi: (For us cack-handers?)
Just string it up left-handed. Oh wait, that'd make it look daft:loopy:

Mmmm... now thats impressive, cud do with some of that theory knowledge, thats what I tend to struggle on. I am trying to do my bass theory and I may give you a call.
What about an ARTS group in general rather than just music? The it would be a little more broad scope.
I'm heavily involved in performing arts and I currently mod on parenting so I'd be happy to chip in as a mod for an Arts group, though not for music alone as I'm as musical as a fish!

I'm tempted to do the usual classicist thing and denigrate anything that requires huge numbers of effects (classicists are sometimes such purist bores), but I gotta hand it to him - I'm not sure I could do that!

Sure - I have very reasonable rates! (i.e. I'll do it for free).

I'd be interested in swapping ideas for sure - I'm as arty as a giraffe.
It could be useful to collaborate for various reasons, since music is not my strength I'm currently looking for a vocal tutor for a project I'm working on, so an arts group would be good. I sometimes work on productions and need various people for acting, set design etc.
It would be useful to have a back up music, dance art or drama professionals on hand for the various projects we work on and it would be great to find out more about people who specialise.
Sign me up!
*besides, I'm hoping to open a 7 day a week performing arts centre later this year or early next, somewhere for people to rehearse, do masterclasses, join forces, audition and for the general public to take classes in various arts*

Hasn't Stanley Jordan being doing this style - on one neck I might add - for the past twenty odd years? :D
