View Full Version : Does anyone remember the name of this pub? Freedom Road, Walkley

It was apparently at the bottom of Freedom Road, Walkley opposite the Freedom View pub, just on the corner so I'm told.

Would really like to know if anyone can remember it's name.

I've been told it was really small inside, like a little dram shop.

Thanks :)

It wasn't The Florist was it?

No that's a bit further around the corner opposite the Crown.

I'm presuming this pub was open in the 60's (a bit before my time i'm afraid).

A few 'mature' people were discussing it in the pub yesterday and I said I'd ask on here to see if we could find the name.

I think it's just a house now & I can't ever remember it being a pub but it must have been at some point. :)

I reckon you must mean the Belle Vue (http://www.sheffieldpubs.fsnet.co.uk/Business/pubs/bellevue.htm)?

Yes I just realised the Belle Vue wasn't quite right. :help:

There's the Firwood Cottage down there too.

Just spoke to my BF who said there was the top Freedom and the bottom Freedom. The bottom Freedom at the bottom of Freedom Road which he says was the Freedom View. http://www.sheffieldpubs.fsnet.co.uk/Business/pubs/freedomview.htm

If you were to stand outside the Freedom View and look straight across, it was on the bottom corner of Freedom Road so I'm told:confused:

Someone has said it was called the Royal Oak but I've never heard of it. Any ideas anyone?

If so, could anyone provide pics??:)

RETEP is quite right the pub you mention was indeed The Royal Oak.
Its main part was a beer off shop. if you wanted to drink on the premises you sat in the lounge at the back and they served you from the beer pumps in the shop! the brewery was IND COUP i think.

Don't know about the Toll Gate but totally agree about Bay Horse - what a dump!

the pub you mean is the Florist, I lived next door but one to it until we were rehoused in 1966. It was not unusual to have milk stolen from window ledge and find empty beer bottles in its place.

Cheers everyone, it was definitely The Royal Oak - long gone now I'm afraid.

The Florist is still standing and still in full swing but I think it's Walkley Lane thats on & not Walkley Street.

Thanks all :)

I've just read an old post about the royal oak on Walkley Rd.
It was a beer only pub with two rooms, one was actually a shop, where you could buy beer by the jug to take home.
To the left, was a tap room, I'm not sure whether there was a bar in that room, or whether you carried it in from the beer off. The front door was on freedom rd. I'm sure its still there as a house.

I lived on Freedom Road and used to frequent the place in my youth. The beer

pumps were actually in the shop, you had to shout through a hatch to get served.

Been closed for about 30 years, and it is now a private residence.

yes after I posted, I remembered the hatch. I can also still picture the pumps

The Royal Oak was ran by my aunt and uncle George and Gladys Needham. Sadly Uncle George died in 1974 and my Aunt went to live on Freedom Road. It was a lovely pub, very cosy and the off sale shop sold everything. I even remember the meat slicer than sold cold meats by the quarter. It was a genuine 'public house' that as the name suggests, was a house that was open to the public. The rooms were small but everyone was welcome.
