Is there any sort of free software that would allow for DVD's to be watched from a laptop? Can anyone give any advice whatsoever on the matter??

VLC gets my vote. Completely free (not some trial period and then send us your wallet) and copes with all regions fine without locking your drive after 5 changes or anything silly.

I agree with VLC, it plays everything!
