I think Alan Shearer is hilarious when he does commentry. He says things that no other commentator dare say. Hopefully he will go in to commentry when he retires.
As for the worst. It has to be Chris Camara!. He is so annoying, i could cheerfully throttle him at times! Why can't he learn to keep his gob in control ?.

The best is Andy Gray - he always sounds so excited about the football.

The worst is Peter Schmichael - does he ever know what he's on about.

The best line ever was by Ruud Gullit - remember 'sexy football'.

Gordon Strachen at least knows what he's talking about and he can be quite comical, although many people find him difficult to understand (not me, I hasten to add, as I have Scottish relatives)

I absolutely hate John Motson. Don't care if he is a legend he is so biased when commentating during internationals it puts everyone off who doesn't happen to be English. I'm English and I cringe at some of the biased rubbish he comes out with.:-

"Can you imagine what England would do in this situation?". Well no, actually, cause they're out of the competition you stupid f***** tw*t!!!

He's so intense and tends to over emphasise words.
Even if he's asking a run of the mill question.

Good ones

Andy Gray, Alan Hansen, Jonathan Pearce, Alan Green

Bad ones

Garth Crooks - his questions are either bland, stupidly long and rambling or irrelevant)
David Pleat - the man is a fool
Ray Clemence - he is an ignoramous, and always biased in favour of teams he played for
Clive Tyldesley - always trying to be clever and show off his knowledge of trivia.

And many more than I am going to mention here!!

Yodameister
03-11-2004, 13:48
Oh, and Gordon Strachan is one of the best and most knowledgable, forgot about him.

03-11-2004, 14:10
The worst by a mile for me is Ian Drury of ITV - absolutely abysmal.
Way too reliant on rubbish cliches, and creating drama where there isn't.

Second is Clive Tyldesley - the constant references to Man U and "that niht in Barcelona" are sickening.

Yodameister

Just remembered I have to chip in again with my least favourite ever : Alan Shearer

His on pitch personality of being totally full of himself and always right he transfers perfectly into the commentary box.

He states his opinions as being incontrovertible facts, doesn't listen to any points made to him properly, ignores important things happenening on the pitch because he is so wrapped up in the point he is making.

And when he is not doing any of the above he is spouting inane cliches.

I'm amazed nobody has mentioned Jamie Redknapp - possibly THE worst pundit going. His happy-go-lucky attitude to everything, our Frank's a top, top player etc. etc. Can't stand the guy, whoever thought he'd be a good pundit wants shooting. I'll never forget one night watching the Champions League over-analysed football feast on Sky when Redknapp claimed that Christain Panucci (35+ y/old semi-legendary Italian right-back) was a prolific goalscoring defender in Serie A. Only for Ray Wilkins to shoot him down in extraordinary fashion by telling Redknapp that he watches Italian football on an almost daily basis and that Panucci was anything but prolific infront of goal. He even backed that up with stats - Redknapp, for once, was speechless.

Mark Lawrenson used to be OK, but over the last few years he's descended into a foolish, half-arsed, joker who doesn't even bother trying hard anymore.

I quite like Paul Merson on Soccer Saturday. He tells it how it is, and that's what I want to hear. Not somebody who dances around issues not wanting to upset anybody - ie. Redknapp.

There are loads of contenders for the worst, but from a short list of John Barnes, David Pleat, Alan Shearer, and Mark Lawrenson I reckon Pleat wins it by a country mile.

Best Motty. Runners up: Chris Kamara, Gary Linekar and Ian Wright ( I know, he's a gooner but he does talk sense)

One of the best I've heard giving in-game analysis was Graeme Le Saux, funnily enough. Worst - Mark Bright, that bloke what did Robot Wars, David Pleat, and every other commentator off ITV... except John Gregory, who I heard do a European game once... and do it really well.

As for post match...
Alan Hansen - UNBELIEVABLE. Bad bad bad bad bad, he's only got one word and it gets boring.
Shearer - ok, but not quite there yet...
I've seen McClaren attempt it, and prove himself a twonk. Shocking.
Best was Martin O'Neill. That guy really does know his stuff. Shocking.

Eamon Dunphy was a great call a few years ago, but he's a shadow of his former self. I blame the Irish version of "The Weakest Link" for that. Everyone else got a black clad dominatrix; we got Eamon Dunphy.

Motty is the ultimate King of commentators. We all know he's a total anorak, but you tell me one sports fan when discussing a match/bout/meeting/tourney, etc., who doesn't come up with some obscure statistic.

As sports fans, we're just hacked off that he has that sort of knowledge in his head, let alone at a laptop, or at worst being passed to him by his researchers.

Be honest, we all know I'm right, because we all agree.

Gray/Tyler have the 'how we can sell this to the UK" sound sewn up, but they still annoy me.

Ros.......en.........thal should have been sacked 20 years ago for his apparent indifference to any sport, but I'd still like to see Jimmy Hill back.

A bit of old style bias might just take some of the awful smugness away from the current crop.

And that smugness applies to all channels.

Alan Hansen is by far my favourite pundit as he tells it straight and has a dry sense of humour.

I like Ruud Gullit as a pundit as well as he is a cool character and is analysis of the games is nearly always insightful.

David Platt is a shocking commentator and pundit as he is constantly moaning and seems like he can't wait to bring people down.

Jamie Redknapp is an awful pundit as I think his analysis of games and comments are very shallow and don't show that much understanding. Too much of a 'pretty boy' - looks good in front of the cameras etc.

Dion Dublin is too slimy and ive hated him since Utd beat Coventry in the cup quarters and he was clapping the referee for every decision that went their way - slimy, greasy Dion!

Im not that keen on Andy Gray as I find him condescending at times and he is slightly arrogant and conceited. I don't like the way he half-laughs at his own unfunny comments either - it winds me up.

Barrie Davies on the BBC was my favourite commentator by a long way as I found him knowledgable, completely and utterly unbiased and I liked his voice.

I think we need more 'characters' amongst the current crop of pundits who would be more controversial and exciting. Most of them seemed doctored and false in a way. We need people who say what they think.

Just goes to show that we are all different. The only thing I agree with you is
No I have just checked, you put David platt, it's David Pleat I can't stand..

It's mostly personal preference with regards to footy pundits rather than an opinion that can really be argued about. You like some people and you don't like others and somebody else likes the people you hate and dislike the people you love.

Back to Andy Gray and while I don't really like the guy I have to admit that his analysis is pretty much spot on. His insight is good and ive noticed he is often right about being substituted - not just when someone is having a shocker or is injured but it's when the tactics aren't quite working and it isn't completely obvious - he knows. I still don't like him though.

I had forgotten about David 'Spartak Milan 4 Red Star Lisbon 1' Pleat. The insightfulness of the man is breathtaking and his pronunciation is spot on. Surely a job as a translator would have beckoned if he hadn't gotten into football. I do agree with this one, not somebody I would miss.

Mr Pleat gets a bad press it seems.

He may be a kerb crawler, and he may pronounce players names with phonetic artistry, but he knows his stuff.

Deviating slightly, the BBC never replaced Barry Davies, who for me was the voice of the world cup. I always loved the way he would accentuate a players name when he was in on goal, and then finish the sentence with "scores" (e.g. "and Carecaaaaaaa.....scores)

Of the current crop, I like Johnathon Pearce simply for his enthusiasm.

"Aaaah, here we are at Anfield, the theatre of so many inescapably beautiful moments over so many dramatic years, but not the 'Theatre of Dreams', as their adversaries on the green sward today would have it. Liverpool v Manchester United; the aristocracy of the top flight, pledged once more in mortal combat.

The crowd vociferous, Benitez demonstrative, Ferguson dismissive, and the officials keeping watch betwixt the vengeful forces not without some moments' worry. The weather is as if Thor himself has taken up residence by the Liver birds, and his hammering can be heard above the din and opprobrium of the baying masses gathered in the howling wind and lashing rain brought by him to rent them asunder.

Nevertheless, the cut! The thrust! The United back pair of Ferdinand and Vidic were as the Pillars of Hercules, seemingly able to stem the tide from reaching the Atlantic Ocean of Van Der Sar's goal emanating from the wizardry of Gerrard and brutal strength of Robbie Keane.

At the other end, Hyppia was like an insurmountable Everest, blocking Ronaldo's ascent to the peak he so desires, and after 70 minutes without a shot on goal, it's 0-0!"

His mis-pronunciations aside he isn't the worst 2nd commentator around but he isn't particularly great. I wouldn't rate him as a highly as Gullit or Gray in terms of being able to pinpoint what is happening, what needs to change etc.

He has changed his style since channel 5, remember ready-steady-teddy (Sheringham) and (Robbie) Fowler-the prowler - the growler. He was still ok on that channel but he is more professional now and one of the best to listen to.
