View Full Version : Tank temperature too high?

I set my tank up on Sunday with a few plants, gravel and furniture.

The tank is a Juwel Rekord 60 and came with a plastic temperature gauge which I placed at the back of the tank. It's reporting the temperature as yellow on the 26 C and green on the 25 C.

I haven't fitted the heater but I know my living room will get even warmer as summer comes along.

1. Is this too high a temperature for goldfish and should I consider tropical instead?
2. If the tank gets too warm in the summer for whatever fish end up in it, how do I cool it down?
3. I've put Aquasafe in as I did plan to get goldfish. If I swap to tropical because of the heat of the tank, is Aquasafe okay?

Regards and thanks in advance.

goldfish can live in warmer water but most tropicals cant live in cooler with the exceptions, anyway that is about a normal temp for goldfish? the heater will have a thermostat so the water will not be heated over what you have set it too

adding ice cubes but i doubt it will get too hot

aquasafe is safe for all fish:)

dont forget to do a 'fishless' water cycle for atleast a week, 2 would be better

tropical fish which can be kept without a heater are platys, guppies, siamease fighters, plecs and some other catfish but you get there full potential with a heater;)

Thanks for the reply. I think I am going to get another thermometer and check in the middle of the tank. I am not planning to get fish for it until I know what temp the tank runs at. Am switching the light on for 8 hrs a day - have just switched it off - and the temp was up to 26 C.

Spoke to a friend at evening class and she keeps her goldfish at 15.

I am considering not getting any cold water fish now because of this heat issue. I would prefer to have happy healthy fish. What I am concerned about is my tank getting too hot during the summer months. I knew my flat was warm but am surprised to find the tank getting that warm.

not sure how she keeps hers at 15? anyway i always thought indoors they are kept at room temp 25? suppose it is better for them to be colder but it wont harm them as it is possible to keep goldfish in a tropical tank
