This year's Greyhound Information Day and sponsored greyhound walk will take place on Sunday 29th April in Graves Park. The Sheffield Retired Greyhound Trailer will be on site selling greyhound-related merchandise and providing information about our homing programme. If you own a greyhound and want to join our walk, please PM me. All greyhounds participating will receive a rosette. If you are interested in finding out about greyhounds as pets, come along to the event between 11.30am and 3.30pm. You can fuss the greyhounds and talk to our experts.

Just giving this a little 'bump'. Anyone with a greyhound who would like to join our walk, please PM me. It's a sponsored walk, but if you can't get sponsors then a donation towards the Fund and the admin costs will get you the Walk Rosette and the company of other greyhound lovers. The Retired Greyhound Trailer will be on site with lots of related merchandise - much of it new to us. Also, if you are interested in learning about the work of Sheffield Retired Greyhound Fund, there will be lots of 'experts' to talk to. Come along and support us.

Good luck with the walk -
I was thinking how else you could circulate this - and wondered if it would be worth a mail-shot to the clubs around Sheffield? Ask them to put it on the notice boards. What you think?

Thanks for the idea Rainrescue. There's been a mailshot to all the people who have homed a greyhound through Sheffield's scheme, and I'm getting a steady trickle of responses. My next step is to ask pet shops on the Graves Park side of the city to display a poster. Last years walk was held in Hillsborough Park and was very successful. This year the idea is to get more people involved from the other side of the city.

yep - its hard to know how to get people involved

what about a reward for the most sponsorship - or sending it out to local schools to see if they could draw something to hand out to everyone who has completed.

I don't know - but somethings just seem to get round more than others and there are loads that own greyhounds. I wonder if they could draw a greyhound for the winner - what sort of colours does the greyhound that you know have, so that they would think who they know who has a greyhound and then ask them?

There is a small prize for the person who collects the most sponsorship and our younger participants get a personalised certificate at the end. The greyhounds get a rosette. The event was conceived more as a 'social' for greyhound owners, but with the added opportunity to raise more funds. It's also an opportunity to let members of the public know what great companions greyhounds make. Last year we raised £700 in sponsorship and £200 from the sale of greyhound-related merchandise. Anyone wishing to join us on the walk should PM me so that I can make sure I have enough rosettes.

Moonbird, it will be good to see you.

Does anyone remember my thread about the Hard to Home greyhound, Big Dan, that was on life-long medication for a pancreatic problem? Well he was adopted by a wonderful couple and is a much loved member of their family. He will be putting in an appearance at the event. This is an example of an owner maintaining a commitment to his ex-racing dog. He couldn't take him home himself, but pledged to fund Dan's medication for the rest of his life. He was at the retired kennels for quite a while before special people came forward, and it would have been easy to give up on him.

We're so pleased that this story had a happy ending.

I don't remember the story of Dan, but it certainly is a heart warming story and great to see his owner supporting him after his racing career is over, if only this happened always :)

Yes, Anna. Looking forward to meeting you. My carefully laid plans for the day have hit a bit of a snag in that, after asking the Chairman of Sheffield Retired Greyhounds to book the trailer weeks ago, he now tells me that it's been double booked and I can't have it! But, we do have a 'pop-up' - I just hope the weather is good.

Well, we loaded up the van with merchandise this afternoon and the weather promises to be good. Almost 40 greyhounds (their owners really) have registered an interest in joining us, and a few lurchers too. Arrive any time between 11.00am and 3.00pm. We plan to start packing up at 3.30.

Lovely story. I think greyhounds are gorgeous (even though one did attack and kill my cat when I was about 10 years old - that was a a tragic accident - it was only following it's instincts and I know not all rescue greyhounds are like that). I would seriously consider rescue in the future, if we had more space - and when friends talk about wanting a dog, I now try to point them in the direction of the local rescue societies, including greyhound rescue.

Hope the event goes well.

We are in the park until 3.30pm and people (+ doggies) can come along at any time between 11.00 and 3.30. If everyone arrived at the same time I'd feel completely overwhelmed. When I did a reckie last Sunday, the Hemsworth Road car park was very busy but the car park at Charles Ashmore Road was virtually empty. Please take note peeps!

Well, that was a brilliant day. A quick tot up indicates that when all the sponsorship money is in we will have raised £1500.00. This does not include donations and sale of merchandise. It was nice to meet Anna and Sue from Greyhound Gap, and to see Anna's collars close up. Also good to collaborate on spreading the word about what wonderful companions greyhounds make. Sheffield Retired Greyhound Fund's next event is the Highland Fling, again in Graves Park, so if you missed us today toddle along to the park on Bank Holiday Monday.

Thanks to everyone who supported us today.

Hi Moonbird

Kept an eye out for you cos I know you called by when we walked last July in Hillsborough Park. Thought I might have missed you as I was a bit pre-occupied tying yellow ribbons round trees to mark out the route of the walk. Well impressed with Graves Park - clean toilets, nice cafe. I'll be bobbing by on Bank Holiday Monday, mainly because my 'name the bunny' raffle only had a few takers today and I hope to complete it next week

Thanks for your interest.
