Hi all im a newbie on this section. I am also a newbie to the idea of walking for pleasure this has been spurred on by the aquiring of a new doggie and me needing to shed some weight. Im not that fit but would love it if somebody could give me some ideas for a long but relatively flat walk I can walk all day on flat does anybody have ideas where we can walk
How about Concord Park. If you keep to the top part thats mainly flat. Or theres the old railway line that goes from Ecclesfield thro to Meadowhall. From there you can go on the 5 Weirs Walk into town and catch the bus back. This is assuming that you`re looking to walk in your area.

You sound exactly like me Carpetviper! I can't do up hills, but flat (or downhill) and it's a breeze for me. That's why most of the walks I go on are the flat ones :D
If you can manage a few gentle slopes, there's some good walks to be had on Wadsley common (car parks at either end on Rural Lane and Long Lane). You can meander about for hours up there. Also good is the Loxley Valley - very flat.

Do you fancy either walk that we`ve planned this week? Both of them are on flat ground, you`ll be more than welcome

Two long, flat walks that I take my dog on are:
(A) Circular walk around the Derwent & Howden Dams, approximately 9.4 miles, it usually takes about four hours. The dog is has to be on her flexi lead all the way round in case you come across any sheep.
(B) Canal towpath to Rotherham and back (approx.10 miles) no sheep on this section so the mutt can have a wander when it’s clear.
Watch out for fishermen though! My previous mutt put his clumsy paw on the edge of a fisherman’s bait tray catapulting every single maggot into the canal, then just to add insult to injury the dog scoffed his sandwiches too without breaking step!
I muttered a red faced “Sorry mate” as I passed; surprisingly the fisherman had packed up and gone home early when we did the return leg.
For Shiregreen you could walk to Lane Top, across Longley Park, up and across Parson Cross Park, then down Deerlands across Concord Park and back home.
Or...
Bus to town, Canal towpath to Meadowhell, Five Weirs back to town, or just get bus back from M'Hell.

Are you able to catch a bus to Totley? You would come back via Grindleford or Hathersage. Are you equiped for wet weather and wear reasonably waterproof boots or shoes?

How about catching the train to Grindleford... walk through Padley Woods... then a stream for your dog to enjoy? From there, you can either cut it short and head to Fox House to catch a bus, or, if you want to keep going, head on up Burbage over Carl Wark and Higger Tor, and then down to Hathersage to catch the train back.
