Sir Ranulph Fiennes (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=149450795), hailed by The Guinness Book of Records as the world's greatest adventurer, last Saturday, 10th March, climbed the North Face of The Eiger, aided by top alpinists Kenton Cool (http://www.lyon.co.uk/showitem.asp?Id=382) and Ian Parnell (http://www.ianparnell.com/). Ian, also an amazingly talented photographer, lives in Sheffield and I think Kenton lived in Sheffield before moving to Chamonix. I once spent an hour talking to Kenton at a party at The Gardeners Rest, without knowing who he was, and he didn't mention the fact he was such a famous climber ONCE, just talked about films and music, how cool is that?!

Anyway the Eiger expedition was financed by Paul Sykes (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/3716706.stm), who built Meadowhall and is now a key campaigner in keeping the UK out of Europe.

Whatever you may think of his political stance, and I know tempers on here can run high sometimes regarding politics, the Eiger expedition was put together with the aim of raising one and a half million pounds for the Marie Curie Cancer Care Charity (http://www.mariecurie.org.uk/?WT.srch=1%28paid%29), which provides high quality nursing, enabling terminally ill people the choice of dying at home, supported by their families.

I think this is such a fabulous initiative that I''ve been blogging about it on both my White Rose of Yorkshire local blog, and my main blog (links in my sig.)

Sir Ranulph Fiennes lost his mother, wife and sister to cancer and had to confront his fear of heights to undertake this notorious climb. No matter what anyone says about the endeavor, he must have been pushing himself to his very limits to achieve this.

I love seeing people getting together and pooling their skills and passions to achieve something great...which is why last month I blogged about The Cutting Edge sculpture in Sheaf Square; the fruition of the combined enthusiasm, belief and passion of town planners, designers, engineers, artists and software developers resulting in one of the country's most spectacular pieces of architectural sculpture.

...anyway, I wonder what anyone else thinks of the fact that a Yorkshire businessman (who happens to be the son of a miner from Barnsley) has sponsored an expedition to reach the summit of the Eiger, to raise money for such a worth cause.
