On 4th July 1976 the Sex Pistols played the Black Swan, but under their real name.
Support act was The Clash playing their first ever gig.

I was working on the Reading Festival as part of the crew and The Sex pistols were appearing there on "The Filthy Lucre Tour"..
Back stage I met Johnny Rotten and his invalid Wife, and we chatted for a while....I was amazed to find out that he was a well spoken polite person, as was his wife..But when he got up on stage he was the vulgar foul mouthed Johnny that we all know....
Well it's only Show biz aint it.??

Don't remind me!!

Me and friend decided to stay in and save the 50p admission that night...... because we had never heard of either band.

..... who later saw the Clash a couple of times, but never the Sex pistols

Me and my mate John Morgan went to this gig. We had seen Joe Strummers previous band (the 101ers), a few months before.
We heard that his new band were called The Heartbeats and would be suuporting another London band.
The Heartbeats came on stage dressed in black, and announced that that they were now called The Clash !
They played a set of 2 minute fast songs that left the sparse audience quite bemused.
There was a small gang of oddly dressed yobos who were enjoying it by the side wall.
They got on stage and proceeded to sing and play quite badly (to our ears anyway). Between songs the ugly singer insulted us 'provincial Teddy Boys' after he got the reaction he wanted (a pint pot thrown at them) they seemed much happier.
I was amazed to read a few weeks later in the NME that they were the future of Rock 'n' Roll !
I've told this tale a few times but I can see people have their doubts..... It's true I tell you !!!!

Now you mention it, I remember Mick Jones making reference to this at a Big Audio Dynamite gig at the the Leadmill a few years ago.

He was saying something along the lines of Sheffield having good memories for him (:gag: :gag: ) - that the Clash played their first-ever-gig-outside-London in Sheffield!

Well-remembered Mojo!

PS By the way, around that time, the Sex Pistols often played under the name the 'Spots' - the Sex Pistols on Tour, See? :D
