View Full Version : Friendliest City ?
Albert Tross 28-10-2004, 12:37 It seems to be a common thought that the people of Sheffield are some of the freindliest you'll ever meet.
However walking the streets it seems we are a town of ignorant and selfish people.
Just the other day i saw an old fella fall off a bus as I was passing in my car. There were large groups of people wandering about and none stopped to offer him any help so i pulled over to see if he was ok.
Legendary Sheffield freindliness.
Is it a myth ?
Or
Is it that we have been watered down by people moving here from other parts of the country and brought there I'm alright Jack attitudes with them ?
Anyone ?
i will say it before Kirky does, must have been the Bus Drivers fault why he fell!

Your judging the people of Sheffield on one incident that you happened to witness whilst driving ?? and from that ask whether we are ignorant and selfish (or both) ? :suspect:
Did you stop the car and get out to help ?
I don't think this question could ever be answered by witnessing one event :)
Albert Tross 28-10-2004, 12:44 Yes pulled over and got out. He'd not got all his foot on the kirb when he stepped off apparetnly. Just amazed me that people will justv wander past and just giver a quick glance and caryy on.
I'm not saying it should all be based on this one incident.
There are lots of examples of both good and bad. I'm pretty sure that a few years ago though many people would have rushed to see if he was ok.
I think that sheffield isn't as friendly as it used to be.
However that is just a sign of the times.
The other day a woman approched me in the street asking for directions to the trainstation. Apparently she had been trying to stop people for around ten minutes and was trotting off towards Sharrow!!! I showed her the way but it did make me wonder why no one had stopped.
Even though sheffield isn't as friendly as before it is still head and shoulders above most places i.e Coventry and London.

Maybe thats why we're less friendly. Southerners coming up here with there selfish ways !
More than likely.
It could also be the large influx of students who tend to loaf around the city centre. Not that i have anything against students as i make quite a good living out of them!
Well the ones of us who were made in sheffield should represent it the best we can!
I think we all know the answer to this question. Students. Thousands of them descend into the city each year and treat it as their personal playground rather than a city which used to have thriving community spirit. These people need to be taught basic citizenship classes in their first weeks at uni - simple thngs like how to queue up, don't loiter in shop entrances, putting your bin in. That sort of thing.
Ned Ludd 28-10-2004, 13:21 If someone had stopped they may have had to take up 5 minutes of precious time or even worse...had to call for an ambulance and wait even longer

I think Angel05 may have something to say about that :suspect: :P
Students and Bus drivers...burn the lot of em, and student drivers huh, burn them buggas an all. In fact burn every bugga. Napalm the Uni, and that other one down Pond Street way, yes burn that bugga an all. An owd folk falling off buses use them as Guys for the bonfires. Friendliest folk in the world of course we are :P
skyfitsboy 28-10-2004, 14:05 If you think the people in Sheffield are unfriendly go try asking for directions or help in Leeds, you will soon change your opinion!
Poor old chap should have been an animal. My dumbo dog made a dash for Graves Park last New Year's day. He got halfway across Chesterfield Road before tangling with a car. I arrived on the scene two minutes later to find at least three cars pulled up in the central reservation and a whole crowd of people wrapping the daft little mite up in a blanket. The bloke who hit him was beside himself with guilt despite it being patently nowt to do with his ability to drive and all to do with the dopey mutt's lack of Green Cross Code application.
I remember thinking at the time that had this been an adult human being there would be much less of a fuss. But still, everyone was wonderful. If any of you are reading it the pup made it through the night and, despite losing a hip joint, now gambols around as if nothing had ever happened.
Having mived up here from London, I have to say that friendliness and helpfulness is more apparent on the streets of Sheffield. In the capital, if you approach somebody and offer help they think you're a nutter and/or scamster. Here, they generally just think you're trying to help. Blind people, for instance, don't mind being helped along up here. As was a bit necessary while Woodseats High St was being given itsbad plastic surgery all this year. This ain't such a bad place.
...it's a lovely place.
And, having a go at students isn't the answer. I don't find the majority of 18 year old kids from Sheffield to be helpful or well mannered....or is that just me?

according to the uni prospectuses that I am filtering through at the moment, their respective city is always the friendliest... :P

Albert, you're not from Barnsley, Rotherham or Donny are you? . . Just that everybody knows Sheffield is the friendliest city in Yorkshire.
Like someone else said - you cant judge us all by one small incident in a town centre full of folk from everywhere in the uk.

What about the students that are helpful and friendly?
I think it's more to do with changing times. It isn't just a factor in student cities and towns. In the hustle and bustle of modern living we seem to have less time for each other especially strangers. It is sad, but as I said, this decline in friendliness has happened everywhere. You'll probably find that it correlates with increasing stress levels.

oh Dear, oh dear. We are a tad on the touchy side...have we perhaps been partaking of more drink than we have been selling tonight. I won't bother to reply to any more of your obviously drunken drivel until you learn to debate without having to resort to personal insults. On the other hand bless you, and may your parents soon get married.     :D
fridgeman 29-10-2004, 07:52  the word "when" as in "when i worked behind the bar,who says i'm still there, left five years ago (drunk all the profits)
moved on saw the light
now caring for old dears with various stages of senile dementia
oh,by the way, my parents don't believe in marriage.
i would'nt call that an insult, its a compliment and i would still come to your assistance in your hour of need, assist anyone i thought was in need of help anyone :)
and i'm always touchy this time in the morning having driven along penistone road, its enough to drive anyone to drink

I agree about Penistone Rd......it's them bus drivers and students, burn the buggas.:P :P :P
fridgeman 29-10-2004, 09:48
we agree on something then
yah burn the buggers (bus drivers  )
Now we have calmed down, in answer to your ealier question, I could never walk past someone who had fallen or was in need of help, and I have a kid who is a student, still want to burn the bugga though :D
fridgeman 29-10-2004, 10:45 i bet he's like my kid, a 21 year old walking nightmare, everywhere he goes there's always some sort of mess, untidy lot these young uns nowadays, bring back that national service that will sort em out, might even treat us with some sort of respect.
hey,and perhaps sheffield may be even friendlier (thats what started this thread ,yes?)
got to go back down penistone road now,
Pete1024 29-10-2004, 17:21 I blame the media for the recent decrease in friendlyness around sheffield.
Just as an example of yesterdays star:
'curfew extended on troubled estate'
'crime blitz drug gangs'
'firework ordeal for takeaway worker'
'mums warning after man tries to entice son'
and thats only up to page four
the last one is about a mum who now escourts her son on a paper round because once a man asked him to get into the car (the kid did the right thing and legged it though).
All this fear culture, making society worse.
fridgeman 30-10-2004, 07:28 could be anywhere , not just sheffield who experiences that sort of thing!!!!!
 good result for united last night, well done lads:clap:
Carborundum 30-10-2004, 07:42 I think Sheffield people are VERY friendly - I can almost never go in a pub in sheffield and come out of it NOT having met a new acquaintance or having a good laugh ... I dont know about the streets but the pubs are certainly very friendly.
Which brings me to a new topic - what is the friendliest pub in sheffield ? Is it true that the older pubs are more friendly than the modern bars ?
fridgeman 30-10-2004, 09:15 :D aye the older pubs are the place to be,these modern holes are rubbish,no atmosphere, music very loud and pathetic, smelling of illegal substances.the police even consider some of them no go areas.
give me a good old snug room anytime  for instance the ship in shalesmoor and the nags head, brill places loads of friendly folk, never any trouble.
Ousetunes 01-11-2004, 14:48 Question: Has anybody ever been let out of a junction by a bus driver?
THOUGHT NOT.

HUH There's more chance of a student letting you out :P
I'm a student driver :D I don't see the difference between a student driver and a regular driver though, as students are of all ages, colours and creed ;)
I'm bound to say this being a student, but students enhance this, and every other university town/city. They use the public transport, shops, bars, cinemas, theatres and so on. They keep hundreds of people in work in Sheffield alone and give Sheffield a good name, as it is a city with two reputable universities.
They are good for the economy and although I can't speak for every single student, they are nice people.
People who tar us all with the same brush will get the same lack of respect in return; those who actually take time to talk to us as human beings and not an underclass will realise that we are just trying to get on in lift like everyone else, only partying and throwing up a bit more in the process :D
Today's students are tomorrow's management. If that doesn't scare ya, I dunno what will :D
Dick_Turpin 02-11-2004, 12:12 Today's students are tomorrow's management. ]
Super. Just what we need.
