View Full Version : SmartSheffield Cards
Bandylegs 28-10-2004, 12:08 SmartSheffield Cards.
Best thing since sliced bread or complete waste of money/space?
Has anyone used their card? (Mine sits on top of a bookshelf acting as a dust monitor!)
Can't remember what a SmartSheffield Card is?

Anyway, what does the panel think?
Oooh....didn't know about this!
How long's it been running for?
Unfortunately I don't use Macdonalds, SHU Union, the Devonshire Cat (much)....:)
Looks like a potentially good idea though.

WallBuilder 28-10-2004, 12:38 This is news to me, the publicity department shouldn't get paid.
Loads of people always get very upset at the idea of having an I.D. card something about infringing their civil liberties or some such nonsense, isn't this card just one step closer towards this?
Albert Tross 28-10-2004, 12:41 Seems a good idea to me. Though i'd never heard of it till in read this thread.

Would be more like a bank card or a credit card, I'd think, rather than anything else.
Looking in my wallet I see a driving licence with a photo on it, a bank card, top up card for my mobile. I've no problems about carrying a document or card that helps me along in life (bank card), or where there is a valid need (driving license).
Where I draw the line is being compelled by law to carry soem sort of ID card that doesn't offer me anything new, and that's being introduced as a knee jerk reaction to a perceived threat. Any terrorist or organised criminal worth their salt will be able to acquire forged or stolen ID with ease.
But....hurrying back to the subject....
No, I reckon it's more like a loyalty type card than anything else, going by the web site of the people concerned. And no one's forcing us to carry it...:)

WallBuilder 28-10-2004, 12:54 I carry a few cards in my wallet as well, I'd have no problem with an I.D. card if it was useful, so far the only extra use might be if it carried your medical history, i.e. allergies, blood group and next of kin. I'd also like it if it was an opt out card rather than an opt in for organ donation.
Just wondered about the I.D. thing if you can use it for voting, doubt very much if I'll be getting one unless it serves more of a practical purpose.

We got sent them when they trialled electronic voting at the election-before-last, so probably only sent to people in certain wards.
Voted online, so never used it - its sitting in its envelope in a cupboard somewhere.
Captain_Scarlet 28-10-2004, 13:31 considering they were made to be used as a voter's card primarily (as well as some council based stuff).
I suppose it is pretty useless. Howden House ever ask for it, ans you don't go to the poll station anymore (saddly coz postal voting is rubbish)
spiffymonkey 28-10-2004, 14:10 I got mine during the electronic voting trial, and voted online. I don't know where it is now. I happened across it a while ago while tidying out the lounge unit, but lost it again shortly afterwards :)
mimicraze 28-10-2004, 14:39 how do i get one then? Been on the site and can't seem to find anywhere on there but I use a lot of the places on the site and would be goodt o have one!

I'd never heard of it either.
Me neither, and quite frankly I'm too prone to losing the cards I have already without adding yet another one to the list.
So, it's a year later - has anyone actually used their card?
Sheffield International Venues offers (http://www.smartsheffield.com/offers)
I can't find anything else on the website these days There were money saving offers from places like the Devonshire Cat and shops, but now... nothing.
Another waste of money slipped quietly under the carpet by the Council??
I have one of the smart cards but it has just sat in my purse and never been used, complete waste if you ask me.
Is this one of those purple cards that I got sent a few years ago and never known what to use it for?
Are there any plans for Sheffield City council to make it functional?
JonJParr 07-10-2005, 10:54 Mine is less than smart. It never works at the Library - ever.
Mine sat in my wallet, keeping it safe as I was told to. Then without my asking, they sent me another one a few months ago, which works in the libraries.:suspect:
Like so many on here, i've never heard of these smart cards either :loopy:
So it sounds like another half-baked scheme that someone dreamt up and has now moved on to something equally important - like deciding how many holes each road should have ....
