I'm interested as to how people find out about new bands and music they like.

Do you find out from listenening to radio, reading magazines, from what your friends are listening to, going to gigs?

I tend to try and listen to radio shows that play a good mix of stuff, not just one style - mainly BBC 6 and some Radio 1 shows.

friends,gigs,clubs,internet,fanzines,magazines.... .everywhere!

Its easier now...just download summit and see if you like it..then buy it ;)

....gone are the days of buying stuff blind and having success about 1 in every 10 times.

You get to know labels etc. as well and know the kind of stuff they put out...or get hold of samplers by a label.

Happy hunting :)

Word of mouth more than anything else. I have a great distrust of magazines; NME is just awful and Q stopped being good years ago. I'm just sick of being told how amazing The Libertines are, they'll go the same way as Mansun and Gaydad, straight back into obscurity.

The Zutons are good, and Kasabian are slowly growing on me, Kings Of Leon have a new album out soon that might be good - i guess new music does have something going for it, just ignore all the marketing crap that goes along with it.

Couldnt agree more...don't listen to any of the halfwits in the mags mentioned above.

There are decent ones about, just a little harder to come by, such as the wire, or careless talk costs lives etc.

I really like The Libertines. I've never been told by anyone how amazing they are, just heard a couple of their tracks on BBC 6 and bought one of their albums. I agree its generally not best to go off what other people you don't know think though.

They do have a certain sound that seperates them from other bands, and that's always a good start.

I've signed up to a few internet music groups that send regular newsletters to my email with all the new music.
In fact I've just recieved an email yesterday letting me know that Michael Jacksons 'Ultimate collection' will be out next month! 4 cd set with 10 NEW tracks too. The newsletters also have links where you can hear the new stuff too.
Just a matter of surfing and choosing what you want!:)

I usually go to gigs, or by random mixed music CDs. Once i find a song i like i type it in google and find what genre it is etc... then i look to buy CDs of that style and collect my taste.

Amazon.com or Uk are handy too as it lets you know what other CDs people have bought that liked that style.

I never really knew i liked Jazz until i bought a weird looking CD in a charity shop for 20p. It was a St Germain CD. Now i have many a Jazz, swing, soul, funk CDs.

I read teletext a lot and they can't get enough. If Pete Doherty (sp?) tied his shoe laces himself it would be in their news section - its madness really. Aslong as you enjoy it who am i to comment? :)
