Someone informed me today that Anns Road School at Heeley has been demolished. Can anyone out there confirm or deny this statement please. :confused:

I used to go to that school. i drove past the other day and there was all fencing aound it so they were doing something. I suspect it is being demolished:rant:

Thanks for the feedback MarkB. I went to that school too as did my entire family. It was only last year I called in to have a look around and the caretaker told me that the place was to be turned into a community centre with display of the history of the school and area. It saddens me to think that another part of my own history is probably gone forever along with the Heeley Green Cinema. Maybe there is still some hope that what the caretaker told me is actually happening do you think ?

They are only demolishing the small concrete 60/70 extension.

The old school buildings are to be retained for community use.

A whole new school is to be built on the playground with south facing windows and a turf roof like Heeley City Farm.

I live nearby and the council sent us details of the plans.

Yes there was something about it on Calender a few weeks ago I got the last bit of the film.I used to go to Annes Road myself when I lived on Foster Road in the 60s some happy memories

Thanks so much for that ! I was hoping that what I learned when I looked around the place last year was correct. I do recall the caretaker telling me that they would get rid of the extension as it's not a part of the original building. I'm a happy bunny now !
I look forward to seeing it all the next time I am over there.
So what grades will the new school accomodate do you know ?:clap:

They actually filmed part of When Saturday Comes in that school. The one with Sean Bean in it.

I actually saw them filming there. They put a different school name sign up over the original whilst filming.

Yes it's name did change to Anns Grove.
I had no idea until I joined Friends Reunited and they included both names.

the school they used was "christened" for the purposes of the film, "woodthorpe school" but it was IIRC actually the school by the old Brightside Railway station. (Anns Road site is on a flatter terrain than where the filming was done; the roads were steep, like at brightside)

the real woodthorpe school is 1930's architecture. the school that they filmed inwas your typical 1872(approx) school-board school ( which are in evedence all around the city.. Lowfields, Sharrow, Anns Road, the old Pye Bank school, the one on orphanage road... Springfield school, Broomhill school, Malin bridge school, these are all examples of the building rush when the school act came in in the 19th C )

they also had a pit, in the film, which was called "Woodthorpe pit"

there hasn't been a Woodthorpe pit, for many years.

the actual street that they filmed the shots of the home the lads lived in, was in the Tinsley-ish area, (rotherham side) looking over onto what used to be Avesta Polarit steels (now outo kompu or something - sp?), and the parkway.

A lot of artistic license was used when the film was made, with silly turns where they would walk round a corner on a street in one district, and the turn would bring them out in a completely different district, on the other side of the city

It was there last time I passed. I hope they dont demolish it I used to work there. The history and old diaries of the head teachers was fantastic.

Hey MARKB i use to go to annes road schoolback in 1974/76

I'm a friend of a former teacher there who was called Miss Forsdike.

I used to teach at Anns Grove and was told that when they filmed the school and pub they had to stick fake blossom on the trees as it was filmed at the wrong time of year.

Don't think I imagined that :?

I went to Annes Grove school in the late 80's early 90's and remember it having a big do for its hundreth birthday, we all had to go dressed up in mop caps. Hope it isn't being demolished, although i did drive past the other day and saw an ugly new wooden builing that looked like a very large sauna. :gag: I remember seeing that school on when saturday comes as well as the springwood pub (nice choice) and me in a football crowd scene. :D

I Also Went To Annes Road Or Should I Say Grove I Was There At The Time It Changed Names I Can Remember The Mayor Coming And Me Thinking He Was The King. Does Any1 Else Remember The Barn Dancing And Victorian Day, Mayday Was Best With The Maypole Dancing And Charles And Di's Wedding We All Had To Dress In Red Blue And White And Watch It On Tele 3 Hrs Of The Boring Stuff. Can Any1 Remember Any Teachers, Mrs Valentine Once Hit Me On The Legs For Spelling Where Wrong 3 Times So My Mother Came And Strangled Her Funny Or The 1 That Had The Classrm At The Top Of That Creepy Staircase With The Massive Chest And Hairy Mole Or The Girls Toilets Being Haunted? When Saturday Comes Was Definatly Filmed There Our Drama Class From Newfield Schl Took Part In It You Dont Get 2 See Me Though Gutted

Apparently the original building is protected and can't be demolished. That's good because it's a nice building but the monstrosity they are adding to it is a right eyesore.
Apparently they are merging 3 schools into one when it's done. I'm glad my daughter left a few years ago to be honest.
