Hi!

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but I'm thinking perhaps parents have the best idea of the information I'm after.

I'm trying to get into primary school teaching but finding it very difficult to find anyone to take me as work experience in a school. I was thinking of doing some work experience in Brownies/Rainbows/Cubs but can't find any local meets and unsure where on earth to look for them. I live in S10 and the number of schools in the area should indicate there should be a few, surely!? I'm not sure of any other ideas to help me get into teaching. The other career option I'm seriously considering is working with children with disabilities - autism, or ADHD are the sort of thing I'd like to work with. Has anyone got any ideas at all?

Thanks if you can help!
Ellie

Hi, i'm in a similar position, i want to get some experience/shadow-work in a primary school though i haven't sent any letters out yet. Planning on sorting that out next week.

Are you at university? I'm at Hallam and there are some schemes you could get on to help get experience working with children. There's one that i think both Hallam and Sheff Uni run where you actually get paid for going into a school and in total you do something like 15 days in a school. Unfortunately i can't do that now as i've nearly finished my third year so i'm too late. (trust me to choose a career path when some good opportunities have passed for me  ) There's also some things you can do through Hallam Volunteering i think (but these both depend on whether your at uni or not).

As for Brownies/Rainbow etc. have you looked in the yellow pages?

You'll find lots of info about volunteering with the Brownies/Guides etc here (http://www.girlguiding.org.uk/join/article.ASP?sID=695).

From their FAQ:

We are unable to give out information about where and when units meet for safety and security reasons. However, if you are interested in volunteering with your local unit we can help put you in touch with them. Please call our information team on 0800 1 69 59 01 who will be able to give you the contact details of your nearest unit.

Hi intel and Rooty - I can help you both in the short term for voluntary work with kids aged 4 - 13. The second week of the Easter holiday I've got a full time playscheme running, some of our kids have special needs too.
Not an educational setting obviously but still Ofsted regulated and follows much of the same protocol.
There will be the Spring Bank holiday too or instead if you're interested.
If you're interested send me a pm with your e-mail address.
I'll need a copy of your CV first of all, have you got CRB checks?
Hope that helps
Z
