Is it just me or do the boys at Sky appear to be buying up the rights for more and more British sports.

We have lost the cricket and much of football to name but 2. Can't believe that the Euro 2008 qualifying matches are only on Sky sports tomorrow.

What about those of us who can't afford the Sky subscription ( well my hubby would vote against as he's not that bothered, I think he has enough of me going down to the Lane at any qiven opportunity and boring him senseless with radio commentry the rest of the time!!:hihi: :hihi: :hihi: )

So where am I to watch tomorrows match with 2 children under 6?
any ideas?

I believe the next battle for TV rights to the Premiership are going to be designed to create a more fair system. This (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4444684.stm) can tell you a bit more. However according to this (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=366165&cc=5739) things aren't going to change that much. I'm not much of a sport fan so I can't really comment on owt else.

In short, it's a more level playing field for possible suppliers. So in practice, we still get satellite/cable companies getting all the rights, just not all Sky.

I think it will have to be a rather large content provider that would have to come along. I wouldn't be surprised if we see the likes of BT and Microsoft moving in on sport for there future internet TV services.

How can Sky be ruining sport? They've pretty much rebuilt the EPL from it's post-Heysel/Hillsborough woes. Also they've risen off the back of the growth of that as well.

Sky having a so-called monopoly by the eurocrats has led to the following:

Prem Plus package price by Sky: £50 a season. As the past 3 seasons.

Stop the monopoly! the out-of-touch EU officials say... the result:

As of August the same games package costs £14.99 a month through Irish PayTV company, Setanta. Hurrah for the EU meddling. Just like the UK is getting a raw deal through opening up Heathrow.

As for cricket, the BBC gave up on it even before Sky. Channel 4 did a great job but it's not realistic for a terrestrial provider to have to give up an entire 4or 5 days TV in the knowledge it could be over in 2 or an entire day could go by with no action because of rain.

You must be wrong. I remember Mr Blair on TV telling us how he was going to stop the evil sky from having all the sports rights on satellite TV.

Having said that it was before murdock newspapers started to support him so I suppose it must have slipped his mind.

That or he's a bent sod who dosn't give a flying rats about anyone as long as he gets power and a fat pile of cash.

Don't know about ruining sport - it won't be long before Sky is totally running it.

You can afford an internet subscription so maybe you could afford Sky Sports if you cancelled that.

We all have a finite amount of money to spend and Sky is one of our options. The sports coverage is excellent and the total package costs much less than 10 fags or 1 pint a day so I believe it's available to most people who choose to subscribe.

If you want to spend your money on something else, fair enough, but don't expect top sporting events for nothing.
