View Full Version : Heeley tram stop stwar 27-10-2004, 20:07 has anyboby heard that the old tram stops are to be demolished to make way for flats to be built Captain_Scarlet 27-10-2004, 21:24 Where abouts are the ram stops ? I didn't know the old tramways went to Heeley, what road did they use ? Gleadless Rd, Myrtle Rd ? Tram went down Queens Rd in Lowfield, came from Londond Rd in Highfield and went up London Rd Sth/Chesterfield Rd in Meersbrook to Woodseats and Meadowhead, with before 59 a branch down Abbey Lane (which explains the side road). WallBuilder 27-10-2004, 22:14 Those big old brick buildings near the bottom of Queens road I've always believed are the old tram sheds. The thing that fascinates me is when they dig the main roads up in Sheffield it's not uncommon to see the old tramlines six inches or more down but still in place. When I lok at the new tramlines and the huge cost of laying them I do sometimes wonder why on earth they buried the first lot, no doubt when they develop a working monorail train system we'll get a second load of tramlines being buried and forgotten. 367squadron 27-10-2004, 22:42 If it is the old tram sheds I heard something about them in the star about a year ago. They are now occupied by several small car garages on albert road if that's the place you mean. Mmmmh, on Queens Road I can only remember of the bus depot at the corner of Charlotte Road (in Highfield). Then at the corner of Queens Road and London Road there are some Victorian toilets. Sevenoaks are in the old Midland Bank buildings (in Lowfield). The gate just after railway bridge is an old access to the station subway (the station had an underground, not a footbridge). The scrap yard on London Road South is the old station building, now painted in white and red. I can't find my old maps, but I think there was a tram depot on Albert Road. But, Wallbuilder, which side of Queens Road are you talking about, the bottom of Queens Road is at the Granville Rd Roundabout, near Maccies. The top is in Lowfield at the junction with London Rd & London Rd South. I'm quite interested ! WallBuilder 28-10-2004, 11:00 Hi, Going down Queens road towards Granville road on the right. There were some big dirty red brick buildings and then just slightly further on was an Arnold Lavers timber yard. I think the timber yard is now the new B and Q warehouse and as I've only had the misfortune to go there once couldn't even say whether the buildings I mention are still standing, nick2 28-10-2004, 11:04 Have a look here : http://www.cyberpictures.net/sheffield/ Captain_Scarlet 28-10-2004, 11:21 Originally posted by WALLBUILDER Hi, Going down Queens road towards Granville road on the right. Thanks nick2 for the nick, it's been in my favorites for some while now ;) Good source of photos ! EDIT: YES! Victory! I've found the map I was looking for. there was a TINY tram depot, soon closed on Albert Road, that dates when the line stopped in Meersbrook. the line was double track up to Thirwell Road, then turned left onto albert Road. the Crown was there at the corner. Going up Albert Road, about 100 yards to the RIGHT. The shed had one track going in only. I'll have a look when I go to Uni in an hour. I think it's a park now ? Fowler 28-10-2004, 11:44 Does anyone have any pics of the Intake terminus whilst operating or any in the intake area? Cheers WallBuilder 28-10-2004, 12:47 [QUOTE]Originally posted by Captain_Scarlet [B]That was a bus depot I mentioned further up :) There also was a siding behind the bus depot where Netto now stands. so those buildings have been taken down some while ago (10-15 years ?). before the bus depot got built were some allotement gardens, but we're talking early 1900 ! Yikes!! Ten years or more? I really am going to have to stop looking for money in the gutter and pay more attention to what's going on around me. I wonder why I've got it in my head that the buildings had something to do with trams? Never mind that's the nice thing about the forum you can learn new things like that fascinating site with pics of old Sheffield trams. Captain_Scarlet 28-10-2004, 13:30 Hey Wallbuilder, LOL. No probs. It's ace to learn stuff when people have experience in that field. I'm at Uni now, but I went by Albert Road on my way here, and the tram shed is still there, used as a garage. I have photos I'll upload them once I get back. On the front is written 'SHEFFIELD TRAMWAY COMPANY' along with the building date: '1878'. Emma83 28-10-2004, 14:26 just read about petition for additional lighting on footpath at chessel close/norton lees lane. can anyone tell me anything about the pathway? any incidents that have taken place or generally? Oh, THAT garage, we used to take our car there, I never noticed it was a tram shed. WallBuilder 28-10-2004, 15:42 I've gone past that garage so many times and have even had my car in there for some welding and I'm ashamed to admit it but I'd never noticed the original sign. I wonder how many other bits of history we walk past without realising? thewillo 28-10-2004, 19:27 trams should go along herries road!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! designbunny 28-10-2004, 19:36 how come they stopped all these tram lines? It would be really handy if there was was running from Norfolk Park to Meersbrook. stwar 28-10-2004, 20:03 thanks wallbuilder my friend works there and asked me to post this thread ,(are you a bricki) Captain_Scarlet 29-10-2004, 09:40 Originally posted by WALLBUILDER I've gone past that garage so many times and have even had my car in there for some welding and I'm ashamed to admit it but I'd never noticed the original sign. I bet you hadn't noticed that ;) WallBuilder 29-10-2004, 12:45 I must admit I don't spend much time admiring car parks and have to confess I'm struggling to even picture a doctors at Malin Bridge. Let me think, there's the place that used to be the Comet electrical warehouse, there are some old public loo's and then there's a pub, the Acorn? or something to do with a tree. What else? Oh yes a very busy road system and the riverand then plod up the hill towards the Beehive? I learn about different areas of the city as and when I have a girlfriend living in which ever area. Are Hillsborough flats still standing? nick2 29-10-2004, 13:35 Originally posted by Captain_Scarlet Malin Bridge tram depot now a doctor's car park ? Just wondered if anyone knew about the particular spot to warrant a petition for additional lighting craigmason 01-11-2004, 09:43 talking about the trams i am to young to remember them (only 32 lol) but wouldn't it be great if the supertram operated from meadowhead into the city |
