Hi,

Bit of a boring subject I know, but a friend of mine at work, has just been diagnosed as having Candida, and for 3 months she has got to cut out all yeast and sugar from her diet.

She's been told she can eat soda bread, but she doesn't know where to get any from. She would prefer plain soda bread, not the one with fruit in it, as she can't eat fruit for a while, as it has natural sugars in it, which she has to avoid!

Also if anyone knows where you can buy those vegetable crisps (parsnips, beetroot etc) from too, would be grateful if you could let me know!

Cheers

I would guess Waitrose or Sainburys, I think I've seen it in ASDA too.
I know you can get bags of soda bread mix from ASDA.

Morrisons OCCASIONALLY have the Soda Bread in the form of farls. Unfortunately they don't seem to keep a regular supply, 'cos I love the stuff and find it 'bloats' me less.

Have you given places like Beanies a call?

You should be able to get vegetable crisps from any supermarket. Same for the soda bread Just look in the bread section where the rolls are and you should be able to find it.

You can get soda bread from most supermarkets, although its expensive. I've had some from Morissons in catcliffe, look for Paul Rankin soda bread, also soda farls.

It's one of the easiest breads to make and delicious hot out the oven. Look for the recipe in Google, BBC has a few (sorry my hyperlink connection doesn't work).

Vegetable crisps are really easy to make and loads cheaper:take a root veg (I like parsnip best), peel, then use a sharp peeler to cut wafer thin slices. Toss all the slices in a teaspoon of olive oil then spead thinly on a tray.Bake at gas mark 2 til dried out.....can't remember how long it takes ? 45mins Just check from time to time, will be dried out but not burned. Delicious and don't need any salt.

Home made soda bread is really easy, and you have the advantage of knowing exactly what's gone into it (and it's wonderful fresh out of the oven).

Morrisons at Halfway have Paul Rankin's Soda Bread. It's on the same shelf as the bagels, just a bit a further along!

I had candida too a few years back and cut out bread from my diet for over a year. There used to be an Irish baker on Chesterfield Road near In a Nutshell who baked my batches weekly which I froze-it was cheap and lovely. Unfortunately he has gone now.
I would be very careful getting supermarket soda bread. The whole point about a candida diet is to eat yeast-free food and a lot of the commercial stuff still contains yeast. The best way is to make it yourself- it is easy as already said.

I used to work at Lily's on Penistone Road - they did gorgeous soda bread! Not been in for a while, but expect they still do it.

Bohan's Irish Kitchen have soda bread.. they're on London road, near the bottom of Sharrow Lane. you can have takeaway sarnies on it, or they do IIRC sell it as "loaves", too.
