What is going on with this building? Is it still empty and who owns it now?

It was being used and leased by gatecrasher, now i believe that the lease has now run out (hense all of the nights moving over to the republic) and the last i heard the developers who are doing the student village were trying to buy it- for what purpose i don't know- either for knocking down or some other venture- i know that it will no longer be granted a license to be a nightclub though cos of the new housing next door as it has no soundproofing and would cost far too much to install.

Perhaps it could be turned back into a Cinema in a similar way to the Showroom ?

They're building student flatsthere ?
Have they researched it ?
I'm sure they'll get a warm welcome from some of the yobbos who drink round there.
Our lik lives in the flats and he says its a nights entertainment watching folks scrpping down there.

Have you seen the size of the land theyhave flattened- it goes from london road all the way back to bramhall lane- the only thing they havn't flattened is the cricketers arms (i think the BBC wouldhave something to say about it if they did- haahaa), it will be all locked up like all the other campus's anyway- no-one will be able to get in and its about time someone breathed a bit of life into london road.

I drink on London Road, and I'm not a yobbo. There is much less bother on London Road at night than West Street.

In that case aren't the student flats going to be sound proofed ? Probably not if they are of the same standard as all the other very badly built student halls around...
humm, ht ebeauty of single glazing, electric radiators and cardboard walls...

This is an impressive Art Deco building (or it would be if it was painted white again) it should be protected from the bulldozer.
HANDS OFF!

It's listed.
In my opinion the paint should be taken off and red bricks showing as it would have been before, a lot more cachet and character ! Or has it always been painted ?

I always thought it looked more like Brighton Pavilion than an Art Deco building.

Whatever it looks like it should be preserved!

I would rather see the big cinema on Abeydale Road saved than the Palais.

The old Abbeydale picture palace is a listed building so hopefully is safe. The Palais for ages was white and certainly looked a lot better than the present 'black' look. In the 70's it had a private function area upstairs called 'Tree-Tops' my very first venture into a drinking establishment.

In an ideal world they would both be saved, but I suspect that even though they are both listed they will be allowed to fall into such a state of dissrepair that no-one will take them on and they will eventually be demolished (as "unsafe").
I don't think anyone will put any money into either building unless they can make enough money to cover the costs.
Unfortunately, the longer they stand empty the more likely they are to dissapear.

I wonder if its been trashed totally on the inside or has all its fittings intact.....

It would be so nice to restore it and open it as a cinema showing classic old movies.......no money in it but a dream I have always wanted to do....

The Abbeydale picture palace is no longer empty, an organisation has gained ownership of it and want to restore it as a community theatre and resource centre, they've got a web site and even have tours of the building for interested people. They'd love to have the snooker hall in their grip as well so that could be restored to a ballroom,[now that bit interests me]. Listed buildins do though fall into disrepair and then get bulldozed which I consider to be sneaky and underhanded.
