Sounds to me like it's an extension into Christian times of the old Celtic custom of venerating minor deities associated with sorings and other sacred places.
You might want to search for similar legends surrounding water nymphs and other mischevious spirits to get a feel for the background to such legends.

Mermaid's Pool is a very eerie place - did a bit of wild camping out there a few years ago.

Sounds a great place where is it?
To the south of Kinder Scout, about 10 minute walk from bottom of Kinder Downfall. Park in Hayfield village and walk towards Kinder Downfall is best bet.

Spot on alchresearch.
firesmudge, if you pan down and right - south west - you'll see Kinder Reservoir with roads leading to it from Hayfield village (which is further to the south west). That is the closest you will get by car, as long as the reservoir roads are open.

I suspect Carmine is spot one.
The Celts were very big on water deities and their memory is still with us today. The Lady of the Lake in the Arthurian legends is the best known.
