Two of the pubs are churches, now!!

The Captive Queen has become "the Church Of The Nazarene",
and The Fellbrigg is now a joint church that encompasses St Leonards and, IIRC, St Pauls, C of E churches (St Paul's is the one which used to be on East Bank Road.)

Quite ironic isn't it, knowing some of the stuff that went on in these pubs!

Why did the pubs close?

vidster
03-11-2004, 16:39
Because there's hardly anybody living around here anymore. The place has been like a ghost town for the last few years.
The brewery decided to close the Jervis when someone drank himself to death and was ignored for ages. Apparently everyone in the pub thought he was asleep.
I think the other closures were to do with falling profits.

Just a slight oversight in the location! :hihi:.
I do remember Troggy though!. I remember him going in the Manor hotel with a shotgun and closing the place down. I also have nightmares about his wheelbarrow and that distinctive squeek. It reminded me of Freddy Kreuger scraping his knives down the wall.
Ohh..... youve gone and taken me back to my childhood now. Sod it!, i'm off to build a den on the Manor fields.

EDIT: Can you remember that program, 'On the Manor'?. Troggy was on that all the time. My uncle was on it too, he was one of the three miners that were always being interviewed.
Ahhhh.. Happy days.....

I remember going in to the Captive Queen for the first time. I'd been told it was full of smack heads and nutters who'd sooner rip your head off than say 'alreight'.

I went in with kblade and we had a brilliant time. After 5 minutes we were asked if we wanted to join in on the pool tables and the night flew by. The landlord had to virtually kick us all out at the end of the night :hihi:

The Jervis Lum was demolished last year, as the population base of Norfolk Park diminished due to the extensive demolition on the estate. The pub was named after the local stream - which is set in a deep ravine and is part of the listed Norfolk Heritage Park. The Jervis Lum is culverted in the vicinity of the former pub.

The Felbrigg has become a thriving church, known as The Beacon (St Pauls & St Leonards). The Captive Queen is indeed now the Church of the Nazarene, as Plain Talker confirmed.

The Horse and Lion is now the only remaining pub in Norfolk Park. It has a unique architectural design, and was built circa 1960s. There is a currently a suggestion that it should be made a listed bulding. I'm collating views on this idea. What's your take on this idea?

Because it's a horrible building. As the rest of the area is re-developed, do we really want a 1960s concrete mess in the middle of our houses?

Listing it will mean it's difficult to change the pub, or modernise it, or even demolish and replace it. I can forsee it becoming too expensive to maintain, and so it will end up a boarded up eyesore. Like Park Hill Flats, on a smaller scale.

I reckon it's a barmy idea.:loopy: It's just an ugly piece of 1960s crud. Pull the bugger down and build something more in keeping with the modern environment. Same goes for that other pile of hideous concrete crap, Park Hill Flats.:gag:

If you had to pick a boozer in that part of the city to be listed, then it would surely have to be the Vulcan, on Northern Avenue, with the magnificent panoramic view out over Sheffield through that massive window.

Thanks for your views andy & hagardriley. I'll pass these on to the council officer who's approached me with this suggestion.
