the Barracuda is still there. and it still does the most massive chip butties I have ever seen. only £1.20 (at the last time of buying)

The butties are made from proper "desperate-dan" breadcakes, about 2 to 3 times the size of a normal breadcake.

Hello Spikey. I am an ex-pat chip fanatic [see my Sullivan's chippy, Wincobank thread]. Is Broomheads at Crookes still open then? We lived in Crookes from 1985 to 1991, and I must say that I was never away from the place! They did thebusiness in those days- proper, trad Sheffield stuff with Fishcakes of a high quality. The staff were polite, but so quiet. They never seemed to talk much to each other. Maybe they were stunned into silence by my good looks, or the sheer regularity of my order for double fishcake and chips? Whatever, they were a damned good chippy, and doubtless still are. Have a fishcake for me, won't you?!

Fishcakes just arn't the same any more. I suspect that they use some fish other than cod now.

Chips? Chips? Don't talk to me about chips. When I were a lad we used to go down to t' chip-oil for a halpenny worth a chips and a twopenny fish, wi scraps on. There'd be enough there to feed a family of 6. And it were real cod, wi North Sea stamped on it, none o this coley, and whiting stuff. An all the chips were about 4 inches long. An when you asked for your order and t' woman said " do you want owt on em" we used to say " aye, another fish" eee we did laugh. Best Chippy I've been in that's still going, Bolehill Fishery on Crookes. Worst, that one on Holme Lane. But then again my horizons aren't that broad.

Stanhope Road Chippy, at Intake - they only used to open a couple of days a week, but the queue went down the street.
A little old lady used to peel the spuds in the back room and pass them through a hatch in the wall. I thought she was sat down all the time, but one day she walked round with the chips and she really was only about 4 foot tall!
Buxtons on Alnwick Road was good aswell - the woman who worked there must have been the fastest chip wrapper-upper in the north! She even wore a strange rubber finger thing to make it even quicker for her!

Barracuda was great. My mate used to live near there & we often went round & stuffed ourselves stupid for not much money

Current favourite is "Moorfoot Fisheries" nr the bottom of Eyre st, next to Shapla curry house

Not the cheapest but great quality & only opens in the daytime. Sign of a good chippy when they don't have to open all hours & cater for us drunks

Used to live 2 doors away from Barracuda, chips were great but if you lived so close then the smell stayed with you 24/7.

One for you oldies from Duke Street.
Who can remember the chip shop at the bottom of Duke St, just below the railway bridge in the 50s, early 60s?
The queues used to be halfway up Duke St. Superb fish and chips.
As a kid was always totally amazed as to how quick the girls were at serving you and they were wrapped in proper newspaper, not the fancy trays you get nowadays.

Anyone remember?

The Baracuda may be still there, but no where near as good as when previous owners had it.

My current favourite is Becketts at Manor Top ( I know it's not Becketts anymore, but everyone still calls it Becketts lol)

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but mine still stands the original owners made great fish n chips.
