View Full Version : Favourite British Film
Kaizabella 22-03-2007, 12:45 Just seen someone post about I want Candy and it got me thinking, what are people's favourite British Films?
Mine has to be a film called Dead Man's Shoes, by Shane Meadows, its a great example of British films which make you think, are well directed and show the class of talent we have here.
Hopefully we can discuss British cinema here and find out about some films which otherwise we may not have heard about.

What are yours?
Same here. I love that film. I even referenced it when choosing a name for a band I'm in. Some of the dialogue is hilarious. Especially the 'Get in your car and f*** off' bit.
Anything that doesn't have Hugh Grant or Emma Thompson in it.
Kaizabella 22-03-2007, 13:07 I was looking on IMDB the other day, and I saw this:
"This film can be summed up with this one quote..
"What you looking at?"
"You, you c**t"
I think thats rather apt.
BlankFrack 22-03-2007, 13:08 My favourite British film is still Gregory's Girl
"Anyway, if girls were meant to play football they'd have their tits somewhere else" :hihi:
upinwath 22-03-2007, 13:12 passport to pimlico
Funky_Gibbon 22-03-2007, 13:23 Get Carter - dark, bleak and excellent.
I agree that Dead Man's Shoes was great.

If i had to pick one i think it would have to be the full monty seeing as it was filmed in Sheffield.
Lord Bute 22-03-2007, 14:04 Dead Man's Shoes - best British film in yonks and yonks.
Not sure it edges past 'The Wicker Man' in my all time list - but it's close.
Banjo Griner 22-03-2007, 14:26 Yeah, Dead Man's Shoes and Shane's preceding Film, A Room for Romeo Brass.
Kaizabella 22-03-2007, 14:27 I'm actually really glad that people have seen Dead Man's Shoes, I've been seemingly on a one woman mission to get as many people as I can to see it. Hasn't worked very well so far :(

"This is England" Meadows latest film about skinheads is supposed to be astonishing. Can't wait.
Kaizabella 22-03-2007, 14:38 I've seen the adverts on film4 and I've been keeping an eye out for it. I'm really looking forward to it. Its with people like Shane Meadows churning out great film after great film that I get aggrevated with the film industry, who are all too happy to ram happy, fake, glamourised hollywood films down our throats without even a nod to the genius that's around.

I interviewed Shane in the foyer of the Edinburgh Sheraton when he was premiering the film. I'll PM you the link if you like?

I'd like a read of that. Why not stick it up on here, everyone seems to love the film.

I agree, stick it up.
Banjo Griner 22-03-2007, 14:42 Why not stick it up on here
Because it means revealing my true identity. Ah, why not:

As it's intended to look - there's various odds and ends included with it.

Well, I've not had a chance to read it all, but I had a quick scan through and it looks a fantastic interview. I just read the bit about how it's loosely based on his mate when he was younger.
Well done!
Banjo Griner 22-03-2007, 14:52 Cheers! It was an amazing experience - I got about 3,000 words out of Shane in around 30 minutes. If it wasn't for his publicist I reckon he would have sat there ranting all day. Top, top man.
It was a while back now, and some of the writing's a bit inexperienced but it's a fairly comprehensive package. It's linked to from Shane's own site, which is a plus.

happyhippy 24-03-2007, 01:13 I'm not a film person at all, but I do love sort of 'Northern gritty' stuff, like "Rita, Sue, and Bob Too", or a really underrated black comedy, "Raining Stones" ........ but I'll still doff my cap tp "Passport To Pimlico", and "Whisky Galore"

Didn't that come out of the US studio system?
cressida 24-03-2007, 12:19 Didn't that come out of the US studio system?
I thought so too, but there have been three film versions
Waltheof 24-03-2007, 18:04 Too many to name, but for me, the classic British--or perhaps English--film was Brief Encounter: no sex, but boy, was the tension there, a perfectly understated exploration of the desire for a more exciting life at a time when people were so repressed by the social order. Of course it is middle class, so if I had to go for a portrayal of the working class as it was, then the kitchen sink dramas of the 60s would represent those, like A Taste of Honey (mind you, I always had a thing for Rita Tushingham). For the acme of sentimental family drama I suppose there is The Railway Children (but mind you, I also had a thing for Jenny Agutter!).
jontait2002 24-03-2007, 19:02 It has to be Trainspotting
sexkitten 24-03-2007, 20:17 This is Spinal Tap
Jabberwocky 24-03-2007, 20:20 The Ladykillers, a 1955 British film with Alec Guinness, Cecil Parker, Herbert Lom, Peter Sellers, Danny Green, Jack Warner and Katie Johnson.
An absolutely brilliant bit of work.

Are you referring to the Lewis Collins film Who Dares Wins ?
I loved that film, even though looking back the actings dodgy and the storyline is poor. Specially for the main theme which kicks in every time the SAS have screentime. I think the tracks called jennys theme.....excellent.
Saturday night and sunday morning.
cruel sea.
Kaizabella 26-03-2007, 09:49 I forgot about Kes and 28 Days Later. Also excellent films!
A taste of honey, with Rita Tushingham. Great stuff.
Waltheof 30-03-2007, 18:26 A taste of honey, with Rita Tushingham. Great stuff.
I agree entirely--see my post above:)
1: Full Monty
2: Kes
3: My Fair Lady (OK it was a "Hollywood" style all the trimmings production but it was as English as they come so yeh)
4: All 4 current Harry Potters
schizodoor 30-03-2007, 20:31 Currently. Shaun of the dead
I forgot to add the foillowing to my list.
Jack and Sarah
About a Boy
Four Weddings and a Funeral
All of which have one major thing in common, Hugh Grant's in them.
So many good ones but it's got to be Trainspotting. It's just so iconic, and a great soundtrack!
