View Full Version : Martial Arts Competition Format
chefkicker 22-03-2007, 10:25 Who here practises a martial art to a competitive level ?
Who doesnt? Who is AGAINST competitive martial arts?
Which format of competitive martial arts do you think is the best from a spectator point of view?
Which style bores the t**s off you?
Put it all down on the screen here.
I read in the Sheffield Start that there is a Kickboxing Event in Sheffield on the 30th of this Month.
Is anybody from AFK fighting?
richardquinn 22-03-2007, 14:57 no one is fighting from AFK, 2 were meant to be but it fell through or sumthing, im not sure of the ins and outs but there will be a ringside table full of us from AFK. should be a good night
i have competed at local level in Judo, but although i love the grappling arts, i'd prefer to watch striking arts, including boxing. i watched the muay thai fights at the octagon last year and that was great to watch.
ValleyBoy 22-03-2007, 22:13 Who picks up the tab for any injuries ? unlike most sports you are trying to hurt your opponent. So i am against.

AFK were not exactly made the top priority on this show. None of AFK's fighters photos or even names have been put on the poster. When we do our own shows we give all the other clubs an equal opportunity regardless of political affiliation.
Look at the last poster:
There were pictures of : Naz Khan = AFK, Lewis Stokes= Black Dragons, Dave Purkiss= Woodseats Thaiboxing, Alex McKenzie= Self Defense Federation.
Also mentioned have been names such as Adam Lawrence & Paul Cropper (Lau Gar).
We set an example of fairplay but looks like not everyone follows our lead.

it depends actually - not all competitive martial arts are about hurting your opponent...

It is very sad to hear that politics can influence even martial arts on such a local level.
If my following question is going to cause a lot of trouble don't bother answering it but I'm trying to work out in what way "politics" can influence your club? (sorry if I'm being stupid).
The only way I can work out is that there has been an event whereby your fighters have kicked the ass of another clubs fighters so they then get arsey and don't invite you along to future events, is this right?
ok chefkicker, i hope you're going to reprimand yourself now for becoming involved in discussions that have little to do with the questions on the original post! ;)
chefkicker 23-03-2007, 15:05 Moving on now:
Popular combat sports round sheffield.
Amateur Boxing.
PRO Boxing
Semi contact points fighting.
Light continuous kickboxing
Full contact kickboxing
K-1 style kickboxing
Muay thai
MMA .
Then there are others i.e. WTF Taekwondo , Traditional Karate.
Lets hear pros and cons of competitive martial arts.

Why would any of your guys be on the poster if they're not fighting on the show?
you could add BJJ to your list...

Sorry, but If no one from AFK is fighting then why would they be on the poster in the first place?

And why would AFK be top priority? :help:
richardquinn 29-03-2007, 15:08 what farhad means is that there is sum anamosity between some people at lau gar and sum at AFK, and due to this the AFK fighters were not made a priority to be matched up.
chefkicker 29-03-2007, 21:53 And why would AFK be top priority? :help:
DOH! Probably because AFK have done more for sheffield's kickboxers from EVERY club than everyone else put together? Not being funny that is an honest comment I couldnt be bothered to go into too much detail or this post will end up being an essay :hihi:
Della :
RE: The "animosities between clubs" AFK people do not have animosity towards other clubs fighters. I get on exceedingly with fighters and coaches from other camps.
Examples:
The marsden brothers are good friends of mine and I have paid their club quite a few visits.
I get on very well with fighters from lau gar such as Adam Lawrence (and his family for that matter , his son and wife happen to also attend my mums and kids group at Southey Green) and Paul Cropper.
I get on well with Daniel Renshaw, Lewis Stokes, Richard Mayo, Rob Kelsall and Leroy from Black Dragons as well as their trainer Claude Evans.
As a matter of fact I have refereed all of the black dragons fighters in their debut matches and good banter exists between them and myself.
Whenever i have phoned up the SDF I have had lengthy conversations with Paul Powers and one of my favourites the "cheeky looking" Scot Sykes (who is as devastating as he is cheeky looking) about sheffields kickboxers.
The only animosity between clubs is caused by people like yourself who ring up at odd hours giving abuse over the phone or just stirring trouble between the clubs.
I know where you train (i.e. you are not looking for a club, just looking to create an argument and guess what? You are not going to get it).
Give my regards to Waj and Hussain while you are at it :P

Chefkicker,
Where did this come from? This is almost surreal like a Tarantino movie. I have no idea what is going on! I came on here to find somewhere to train. I feel it's important to do a little research to see what a club is about. It is important to find the right club.
The anamosity to which I refer is blatantly displayed on your website forum. FACT. There are numerous posts that are extremely derogatory towards other clubs to whom you refer to above as friends?!?
http://www.sheffieldkickboxingclub.com/forum/forumthread.php?parent=1609&fid=1
Surely as admin for the above forum you have control over what gets posted? How can you allow this? I believe in freedom of speech and that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but surely these kinds of opinions are best left silent as all you are doing is fuelling the fire? To what gain Chefkicker?
My first experience of the Sheffield Kickboxing scene has certainly left me with more questions than answers.
richardquinn 30-03-2007, 00:35 the AFK forum is moderated but only things such as racial abuse etc are removed, the forum is one of few places where people can truely say what they feel and think without it being removed before anyone sees it, at the end of the day if the person is willing to say it under there real name then i say let it be, if they say sumthing bad about sum1 but use there real name than the person in question will know who they are and confront them about it if they wish to

Well whoever moderates that forum should be ashamed of themselves! I have just been on it to have a look and it is an absolute disgrace. How can you preach on here about anomosity between clubs and then have a forum whereby people are posting stuff like that?
I know and train with the majority of the lads that are been slagged off and they are a nice bunch, it's not even their fighting styles/techniques that are been slagged off, Its them as people, which is not really what your forum is about, or is it?? It makes your club look unprofessional and unfriendly. You can see that it is only certain people who are doing all the backbiting but how are people who go on for a look not to know that its not the view that AFK takes as a whole?
I'm sorry but I have to disagree, I don't see anyone really using their real names!
I don't want to get into a slanging match it is purely an observation!

Tanya T 1 30-03-2007, 14:30 Good Luck to everyone that is fighting tonight at the Octagan
