Something that was brought to my attention today. It is this very subject of forestry management that brought me to SF to rant and rave about their over excited desire to make our foresta and woodlands clean and tidy and in doing so destroying what it was they are employed and given grants to preserve.

Long live dirt, weeds and fungus and especially at this time of year...the dead :)!

Good woodland management dictates that....

a) Invasive 'alien' species are removed/controlled.

b) Older/dying trees are felled to open up the woodland floor.

c) Felled trees are left in situ in order to rot and feed ALL comers.

I keep all dead wood and prunings in a pile in my garden and its amazing the stuff it attracts.

acutally I did read quite recently about a rare bird making a come back due to new methods of wodland clearing. These birds aparently nest in open spaces left by such occurances as the hurricanes in the South Of England
