View Full Version : New book club in Sheffield
taylorhall 21-03-2007, 19:20 Hi,
Any avid readers out there interested in meeting up with the like minded? We are starting a monthly book club. It's likely there will be some drinking involved. My name is not Richard or Judy (thank god!).
bethwilliams 22-03-2007, 13:50 Hi
Where were you thinking about meeting and how often?
Beth
jenniflower 22-03-2007, 14:09 What type of books will you be reading?
intel_inside 25-03-2007, 16:04 what kind of books will you be reading?
Gillian* 26-03-2007, 16:50 Hi,
I'm interested in this too - depending on when and where you were thinking. Obviously holding it in or very near a pub would be ideal.
taylorhall 26-03-2007, 21:04 Thinking about meeting once a month and most definately in a pub. We were thinking of a lottery system for the type of books... all involved write a suggestion on a piece of paper, we pick one at random and start from there...We will probably be steering away from Sci.Fi., Romance and anything that should only be read by small children (yes, Harry Potter!)
intel_inside 26-03-2007, 22:02 sounds great, i'm really interested. when's the first meeting, and what will we be reading first? i've read all the harry potter books anyway ;)!
Hmm, ok - never been in a book club but sounds interesting...
so i'm guessing the way it works is a book is slected, which is then discussed at the monthly meet after being read? Am i right so far?
so what if one simply can't get on with the book (happens to me occassionally) - would this be our sum contribution to the discussion?
jenniflower 27-03-2007, 10:34 I'm about to read 'A man without a country' by Kurt Vonnegut. I've read an extract and it looks like it's going to be a yank basher. Excellent! Does anyone fancy that one, or has anyone read it?
As for Harry Potter, I will be reading it this summer, but I promise not to bang on about it to ye who are sworn off it!
Looks like a good crowd here, how spread out are we? I'm just south of central near Bramall Lane.
intel_inside 27-03-2007, 12:51 i live in crookes and a mate at work is also interested and he lives meadowhead. maybe a central meeting is the best bet?
taylorhall 27-03-2007, 20:23 Hi,
I'm in Crookes but somewhere central may be best for everyone. I'm open to suggestions. I like the idea of ' A Man without a country' by Kurt Vonnegut . Maybe we should read that first and then decide on future choices when we meet up?........ So we just need to fix the place and time. Thursday nights are usually the best for me.
jenniflower 27-03-2007, 21:36 Thursdays are bad for me, I go see my gran there, but could swap her round if thurs is best for everyone. The Washington is a nice relaxed pub, we could all meet up there the first time, it's central and public for first meeting.
jenniflower 27-03-2007, 21:38 Also, I need a new signature, so please, if we do this Vonnegut book, will you all pick your favourite quote and I'll use one of those, I mean what is this snail crap I came up with???
i could do thursdays and i'd be happy to start reading that book :)
intel_inside 28-03-2007, 08:02 thursdays ok for me, ill double check with the guy who's also interested at work later. i'll also try and get my hands on that book :)!
taylorhall 28-03-2007, 17:32 If you are after a Vonnegut quote one of the best is "new knowledge is the most valuable commodity on earth. The more truth we have to work with the richer we become".....there are also some great quotes in 'Conversations with Vonnegut' which is a collection of all the interviews he has given. Well worth a read if you are a Vonnegut fan.
I'll get cracking on 'A Man Without a Country'. I have a friend at work who may also be interested so it sounds like there will be a few of us.
jenniflower 28-03-2007, 19:13 Keep the quote suggestions coming...
I started this book last night, but then my boyfriend picked it up and took it away:rant:
intel_inside 30-03-2007, 06:30 so anyone set a date for the first meeting yet?
Did this ever happen then? I'd be interested too.
No, hasn't happened yet. i'm going to try and find the book today, but we still need to arrange a date.
Ok, well I'll get the book and am interested in coming too if that's ok.
jenniflower 02-04-2007, 13:38 Ok, well I'll get the book and am interested in coming too if that's ok.
Of course that's OK - the more the merrier!
taylorhall 03-04-2007, 16:09 I've started the book and it's going well... should we meet the week after next? I imagine everyone will be pretty busy over Easter. How is everyone fixed for the 19th?
jenniflower 04-04-2007, 08:56 works for me
intel_inside 05-04-2007, 22:24 sounds cool. Washington still? Time suggestions? Just got hold of the book today, so something for me to do over Easter!!!
This sounds interesting. do you have a date for the first meeting yet?
i could pretty much guarantee the following thursday, but not sure about the 19th...
This sounds like a great idea, I'd be interested in coming, will purchase the book tonight. Will be checking to see if a time and date can be pinned down.
jenniflower 12-04-2007, 16:27 Hey guys - Kurt Vonnegut died yesterday. See JoeP's post from today.:(
Louise C 15-04-2007, 14:50 Did anyone make definite arrangements for this in the end? I have only just seen this and now have 4 days to read the book!! - will need to employ Johnny 5 style reading skills but am v. interested :)

i'm not aware of any definite arrangements - the 19th was proposed as a date, but i'm not certain if i'll be able to make it as i'm not in sheffield on that date. the washington i think is the proposed venue, but no times have been discussed as far as i know...
jenniflower 16-04-2007, 11:30 Hi all, due life craziness, I can't make the 19th any more.
I think someone should propose a date well in advance and then I would be happy to PM everybody to try to get it to actually happen. Otherwise I fear dates will keep being proposed and not finalised and never happen.
???

good! i mean i'm glad it's not just me struggling for the 19th! i can't do the 10th of May either, but apart from that Thursdays are good for me.
intel_inside 17-04-2007, 12:48 I think a meeting should be sorted for ASAP so we can get things moving before the summer and hols etc. I think when the original date has been set, we should meet every 4th week regularly, so this messing around with dates can be avoided. What does everyone else think?

how does the last thursday of every month sound?
jenniflower 18-04-2007, 14:36 how does the last thursday of every month sound?
Good idea.
intel_inside 19-04-2007, 07:19 So the first meeting will be a week today at the washington. how does 8 sound for everyone?

sounds good to me :)
taylorhall 21-04-2007, 18:25 Hi,
I can make that time and date as well- we can pay homage to the late, great Vonnegut.
Louise C 22-04-2007, 17:19 i can make this too - see you all thursday :)
jenniflower 24-04-2007, 10:00 See you there ;)
Hi,
Think I missed the meeting the other day. Did it happen successfully? When's the next one. Did you pick another book and will that writer die too?! I'd be interested if you're still looking for people?
Cheers
Owen
intel_inside 25-04-2007, 13:33 Hi Owen
You've not missed the first one yet! it's tomorrow night (April 26th) at 8 at the Washington in town. Hopefully the next author won't die. We'd have to start picking our least favourite to read!!!
i have a feeling that this is a daft question, but what the hell - how are we all going to know who we all are? (when we first get there i mean?) should we all wear a red rose on our lapel? ;)
jenniflower 26-04-2007, 08:52 I guess we'll all be clutching our books?
Gypsy Hack 27-04-2007, 12:24 That was great fun everyone. I enjoyed meeting you all. I trust Anvil got home ok. ;)
I know last Thursday of every month has been agreed, but as I said I won't be around for that, or the next few. So if anyone is up for a discussion on, say, Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro in three weeks time, it'd be good to see you all. :)

haha! i did, although i was a little late for work this morning! i'm sooooo gonna stay sober for the next one! i had a good time though - nice to meet everyone (forummers and non-forummers alike!) LOL
i've ordered the book so i'm happy to read that for the next one if everyone else agrees, and i could make Thursday 17th of May.
Gypsy Hack 27-04-2007, 15:03 i've ordered the book so i'm happy to read that for the next one if everyone else agrees, and i could make Thursday 17th of May.You will love it!
I have a small chance of getting on the guest list for the Manics gig that night. Otherwise I'm up for it.
jenniflower 28-04-2007, 11:57 Hi everyone, just to echo what's already been said - great to meet you all and talk about KV.
Small Sheffield, huh?
I will make it my mission to read the book..
jenniflower 11-05-2007, 10:31 any chance of not putting it on a THursday this time?
i can only do thursday this week, and even then i wouldn't be able to get there till about 8.30...
Gypsy Hack 14-05-2007, 17:08 I am easy. But for me it has to be this week, if at all, because from next Monday I'll be gone.
Is there going to be a meeting tomorrow then? If so what time is everyone meeting and will it still be at the Washington?
Gypsy Hack 16-05-2007, 19:16 It's looking doubtful. It may be easier for the rest of you to organise for next week, even if I won't be able to make that. At that time I'll be sitting in an airplane flying over tropical...erm... Gloucestershire.
yeah, i thought it was looking doubtful. have a great trip if it doesn't come off for tomorrow :)
Sorry, I've been rubbish again and missed things. Is there another date and book set? I'm make a concerted effort to not arse it up this time.
Thanks
Owen
chloelouise 25-06-2007, 11:49 If this is still going on could someone let me know the next meeting and the book please?
Really interested in coming,
thanks, Chloe Xx
i think it's fair to say that this has died a death :(
LinchpinLulu 07-07-2007, 20:45 Am I too late? A friend and I would like to join. Anything definite yet?
Dizzyblonde 17-08-2008, 23:29 Is this running still? looking for a book club.
robocook 24-09-2008, 11:48 Hi, is this book club running? I would really like to join one.
Chris
Is this book club still up and running? I am so interested in joining one - if not running anyone fancy starting one up? We could meet every couple weeks/a month depending on how quickly people can read stuff. Discussion of any books of any genre would be fine with me. We could meet in a public place and then have a natter/drink or 3! xx
Hi i am interested in joining a book club, anyone know any that is up and running.
Hi I'm interested too. Anything happening?
ajww4764 29-01-2009, 19:45 Hi all, we have just aquired a premises on Ecclesall Road that we are currently hiring out for private functions etc. It only holds up to 25 people so is a very small venue indeed, and would be perfect for a book club. If anyone is interested we would charge a very low rate for a regular evening mid week slot, plus we could provide wine and cheeses from our shop next door. Just a thought?....if anyone is interested please call 'Chris' on 0114 2668747.
princessleah 04-03-2009, 01:06 Hi, if this group has formed, i'd love to join!
If it's not been formed yet, I have a suggestion for a time and place...
There's a small pub quite in the centre of Sheffield called the frog and parrot, its in the centre, but away from the main streets.
How does Wednesday 18th March at 6:30pm sound for everyone? I've set it that far away because it gives everyone a chance to read this hopefully.
I've added the following link to the pub:
sheffieldpub.co.uk/pubs/city-centre/frog-&-parrot
Sounds good to me!!! I'd love to join a book club and Wednesdays would be fine!!! Although I have no idea where that pub is but I am sure my Tom Tom would help me out!
princessleah 06-03-2009, 14:53 Great, at least there will be 2 of us there now, lol.
If we just have the first meeting as a 'get to know' the other people in the book club and just agreeing what book to read for the following week.
And if everyone brings their favourite book and just puts it on the table then every-one will know that is the book club when they come in the pub. It also gives an easy talking topic.
See you then!
Hi
I'll come if that's OK? I'll have a good think about my favourite book...!
MissClarkey 08-03-2009, 22:00 Hi, I'd like to come to this too!
I would have to leave at about 7.45 as I have to get somewhere by 8.15, but that should be alright, right?
Sounds good, I'll try to make it.
princessleah 10-03-2009, 11:26 Great, see everyone next Wednesday then! :D
6:30 at the frog and parrot pub in Sheffield.
jenniferg 10-03-2009, 11:55 If this gets off the ground we will probably join but will have to be the next one, can't make this month's.
I might come along to this too, I've been looking for something central for a while :)
Is this still going ahead this evening?
I don't want to be the only one turning up, clutching my book!
MissClarkey 18-03-2009, 10:23 I don't want to be the only one turning up, clutching my book!
I was thinking exactly the same thing! I'm going to be there (I'm Colleen, by the way!) and I told my housemate about it and she's coming too!
See you at 6.30! (If you'd like to PM me I'll give you my mobile and vice versa so we can contact each other if needs be!)
Hi there, I'd love to join a book club - did you meet up on Wednesday? If so hope it went well, and please could you post details of any further meet-ups? Thanks!
MissClarkey 23-03-2009, 11:31 Hi, we did meet up on Wednesday. It was a nice small friendly group, and we decided our next meet up will be:

Hi!
I would be interested in joining the club at the Frog and Parrot, are you still taking new members?
jenniferg 08-04-2009, 22:54 Was the first night a success? Aer there anymore planned?
MissClarkey 09-04-2009, 11:55 is it the chrysalis or chrysalids? ..i can only find reference to the chrysalids on amazon
The Chrysalids, sorry.
MissClarkey 09-04-2009, 11:59 Hi everyone
New members are definitely welcome! :) We are meeting again on the 22 of this month at 6.30 if my memory serves me correctly.
Our first session was a success and we just introduced all of our favourite books and we chose one member's favourite to go forward with. I guess we'll agree the next one at our next session so any new ideas are welcome!
The book we're reading for the 22nd is The Chrysalids by John Wyndham, and it isn't too long and is a very good read!
PM me if you have any other questions
Colleen
MissClarkey 09-04-2009, 12:02 Oh, and The Frog and Parrot is on Division Street nearish Pizza Express for anyone who isn't sure..just a bit further down the road towards town :)
emmgremlin 09-04-2009, 23:09 hi still ok to join?
sounds good
emma
MissClarkey 10-04-2009, 20:07 Absolutely! :)
I would like to come along too if thats ok. I've been looking to join a book club for a while!
MissClarkey 15-04-2009, 09:34 Yep, anyone is welcome, and anyone who is interested is fine to come along! Apologies if I can't reply to this again this week (limited internet access) but anyone who sees this thread and is interested is very welcome to come along next week!
Judging by the choice of book it appears that the suggestion on the first page of avoiding sci-fi has been ignored. Which is good! Can't be excluding genres on the basis of a few easily breakable misconceptions. I've been looking for a book club so this would be terrific, if I can make it.
john scott 17-04-2009, 14:09 Sonds interesting--if newcomers are welcome I hope to see you there!
Great! I have acquired and am reading the book, so I'll see you all in there this week- I'm guessing I'll recognize you all by the books? I don't usually read sci-fi, but am finding it surprisingly entertaining, I may be converted...
50's chick 20-04-2009, 00:48 i got the book and i was a bit sceptical at first but finding it quite thought provoking now. looking forward to meeting you all m x
I'm not going to be able to make it tonight, sadly. I would like to be involved in the future though, so please update this thread with what you all decide to read for next time!
Have fun!
50's chick 22-04-2009, 23:33 sorry i didn't make it this evening. i bought the book and was really looking forwards to it when i got stung by a wasp! as i'm allergic it was a bit of a drama and just getting over the side effects of the epinephrine now
what r we reading next month? if i buy the book early enough i won't have to read it all in a day like i did the chrsyalids. lol
m x
MissClarkey 23-04-2009, 09:14 Hi everyone,
our next book is The Life of Pi by Yann Martel

Hope to see all those of you who turned up again and look forward to meeting any newcomers!
Colleen :)
MissClarkey 27-04-2009, 09:23 Hi again,

MissClarkey 18-06-2009, 12:16 Hi everyone
I feel a bit like I'm talking to myself with all the posts, but people still keep coming so we must be doing something right!
Our next book is "253" by Geoff Ryman. (It's fantastic! My choice so I may be a little biased, but if you're the kind of person who enjoys people watching you will really enjoy this!).
We are meeting at The Devonshire Cat again, on Wednesday 15 July
Hope to see you there :)
Colleen
MissClarkey 18-06-2009, 12:17 We're meeting at 6.30!
Hey, i'm fairly new to this forum. I would love to join the bookclub if anyone can? How was the Red riding Hood film? Any good? (:
cind1960 20-06-2009, 14:56 Hi
I am also interested in attending this bookclub. Is it ok if I come along as well on 15 July?
MissClarkey 21-06-2009, 08:38 Any new members are very welcome :)
Unfortunately our plans changed an none of us could actually make the red riding hood film. But other than that we are doing well, I know I've found some new favourites from authors I never would have picked up before! :)
Look forward to meeting you
Colleen
KalamityK 17-07-2009, 22:26 Hello, I'm interested in joining the book club. I'm quite new to Sheffield & get through more than my fair share of books on the tram. Is there a date set for August? Hope so! If yes, where & what time. Which book should I buy? :-)
MissClarkey 18-07-2009, 09:18 Hi, sorry I haven't posted an update yet!
We meet on the 3rd weds of every month so it will be Wednesday 19 August at 6.30 at the Devonshire Cat (provided it's re-opened - if not we'll meet there and relocate somewhere else like we did on Weds!).
The book we're reading this month is Marina Lewycka's "A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian".
See you all there :)
Colleen

would you like to advertise the Book Club on our community database?
Your group sounds very friendly and it would be nice to add to our growing list of similar groups. If you agree I'll need an official title for the group and some contact details, otherwise I can use the information that's already been posted here. Please PM me if you're interested. Hi, I've just found the details of your book club and wondered if I could come along to the next meeting? I notice that I've just missed the last one!
MissClarkey 11-12-2009, 19:56 Hi, really sorry but theres no official book club this month - we're going for a christmas meal which had already been booked (and sorry for the delay in replying.) I'll be sure to put up info about January's book though :)
Intastella 14-12-2009, 15:28 I'd be interested in getting involved with this in the new year...i'll read pretty much anything! :D
MissClarkey 22-12-2009, 19:16 Our next meeting will be 20 January 2010, at the Devonshire Cat at 6.30. We'll be reading 'Cold Comfort Farm' by Stella Gibbons.
Newcomers are very welcome! See you there :)
Will I be ok to come along too? I've never been before but I love that book and that pub if that helps :)
Hi
Hope you can you squeeze another newcomer in? I'll be there on the night, looking lost! :)
Happy new year!
Andrew
MissClarkey 03-01-2010, 18:58 Ooh exciting, two new people, excellent! Lost-looking people and people who love the Devonshire cat very welcome, I tend to fall into the first category a vast amount of the time and I definitely fall into the second category!
Colleen :)
Hi there Im also really interested in coming along to the book club but am unable to come this January meetup. Would there be space for another newbie foe your next meeting and when would that likely be?
Melissa
bubble_she 17-01-2010, 07:16 I would love to join this, I wont have time to make the 20th and have read the book unfortunately but would love to come to the next one if thats possible?

Hi there, seems like a bit of a new year newbie fest here, I'd love to jump on the bandwagon. Is it ok to come along to the next meeting? When will it be and what's the next book?

RVRoberto 25-01-2010, 12:21 Can I join book club? When is the next meeting, and what book is being discussed?
...and another one! when's the next meeting and what's the book, if it's OK for new people to come along? Thanks :)
bubble_she 31-01-2010, 16:17 Would it be a good idea to maybe start another group for all the new comers? Im not sure one group could sustain this amount of people and give everyone a chance to get involved.
Am happy to get involved in organising it if people are interested in a new group?
LegalBlonde 31-01-2010, 16:23 bubble_she that is a really good idea and might encourage more people (me) if there was a lot of people in the same boat!
MisShortie 07-02-2010, 22:07 I'd be up for joining a smaller group of newbies =]
Darkshines 09-02-2010, 14:47 I may be interested in joining a book club too. Anyone have any details?
