View Full Version : I've just started Taekwondo and want some effective stretches byevilroot 21-03-2007, 15:27 Hiya, How long until I can do the splits if I stretch every day? upinwath 21-03-2007, 23:34 FIRST - Make sure you warm up well before trying to do any stretching. If you don't you can do some serious damage. Next - it all depends on you. Are you supple anyway or stiff as a board ? I did it within a year but I was lucky as I was flexable to start with. Many never get there. All martial arts require as much in mind as they do in body. pattricia 21-03-2007, 23:47 Hiya, How long until I can do the splits if I stretch every day? What is Taekwondo ? upinwath 21-03-2007, 23:55 What is Taekwondo ? Way of the hand and foot. A korean martial art known for it's high and flying kicks. Techniques include kicks designed to dismount a horse rider and very powerful strikes than can break bricks and so on. pattricia 21-03-2007, 23:57 Way of the hand and foot. I was interested in the stretching part. upinwath 22-03-2007, 00:07 Depends on the instuctor but in it's best form it's a full contact martial art with very heavy training involved. If done well stretching is a must as the fancy kicks demand that you are able to have free movement of your legs. pattricia 22-03-2007, 00:11 Depends on the instuctor but in it's best form it's a full contact martial art with very heavy training involved. The other sounds too demanding & physical. upinwath 22-03-2007, 00:34 I do Pilates, so was interested in the stretching part. The other sounds too demanding & physical. I did four sessions a week each of two hours with a stamina night once a month with no rest in the two hours. Full contact sparing with no pads and sit ups/press ups by the hundred (not joking) Not for the faint hearted. Strix 22-03-2007, 02:06 I did the wussy version ;) I also did gentle stretching at least 5 times a day and had good results, but that may be because I've always been supple anyway I used to be able to put my palms on the floor and bend my elbows quite alot, almost folding double, and could do the splits - just God I feel old now :( AtticusFinch 22-03-2007, 11:18 Where can you learn Taekwondo in Sheffield (preferably somewhere reasonably central)? :) byevilroot 22-03-2007, 13:24 Hiya, after years of bad exercise practice (mostly playing football with out stretching) I'm stiff as a board. My hamstrings are really tight. I stretch everyday now through and I'm 23 so I'm hoping a year will do it. Where did you train upinwrath? I train at the Shefiield Uni Taekwondo Club, you don't have to be a student though. It's a big group 40+ sometimes with lot's of high dan grades and I really enjot it. We train in croft house, it's 2mins walk from tesco on west street. £2 for 2 hours so really good value. upinwath 22-03-2007, 13:56 I'm getting old now and am a few inches away from the splits. (front and side). That's how it goes when you stop training. byevilroot 23-03-2007, 11:59 I'm getting old now and am a few inches away from the splits. (front and side). Goldthorpe, thurscoe and south elmsall. magico 27-03-2007, 08:08 be very very careful, not important to do the splits to be good at martial arts, i made a big mistake trying to do the box splits, i had my own club and used to teach kung-fu, it ended my career, really not important, just be happy being flexible, and only hold a stretch for about 8sc, book on stretching by brian anderson, good luck, dont push it. |
