View Full Version : 4000ft over Grand Canyon, are you brave enough?...
The new glass walkway called the 'Skywalk' has just been finished and reaches out over a cliff 4000 foot high overlooking the grand canyon. The walkway is see-through so you can see the ground far, far below.... Would you brave it?
Check out the aerial views, click on the button under the pic on This Link (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/6469941.stm?ls)
Ohhh that looks brill..
I'd do it..:D :D
I need to go back now... to experience that :D looks well good.
The helicoptor ride we did was cool though
I saw the beginning of the news last night, when (without warning) they showed a screen shot of the glass platform. Just seeing that made me nauseous, and I had to look away.
Don_Kiddick 21-03-2007, 09:00 Both options in the poll apply to me.
I'd set off with clean undercrackers - but I'd go round :hihi:

Notice the guy on the end of the video clip laid down looking through the glass....was he being a clever git or was he soo terrified he wasn't going any further??:hihi:
upinwath 21-03-2007, 09:05 That has to be a must if I'm ever kicking about in the area.
Minesadouble 21-03-2007, 09:10 Not a chance !!!! :nono:
Your all maaaad !:loopy:
carcrash 21-03-2007, 09:22 I was a bit disappointed with it when i saw it. I thought it went all the way over the canyon
Just had a thought....imagine if they did aeroplanes like that?...with a see-through floor? :o :P
Plain Talker 21-03-2007, 09:25 speaking as someone who gets dizzy if she wears platform shoes, I don't think I could cope with this at all...
I suffer from "terra firma".. The more firmer, the less TERROR!
I could not go across the glass panel in the "walk of faith" at blackpool tower, and that is far smaller, in area, (about, what? three feet by four or six feet?) and nowhere near as high (about a quarter of the height?)
having said that, I consider it an achievement that I got up the tower in the first place.
Having said that, the views do look absolutely fantastic. (I've always thought the Grand Canyon to be stunning)

*faints clean away at the thought...*

Why not PT?...if wonderwoman could do it  you should have no probs!
Plain Talker 21-03-2007, 09:42 nope  I reckon, if I flew, I'd finish the journey with a new pair of (plastic) bracelets.... I could envisage me having a panic attack in the air, and ending up in restraints....
I'd like to give it a try. I stood on the edge of the canyon when I went in 2005, you are simply so high that you have no real sense of scale. Don't get me wrong, it'll be terrifying doing the walk, but I don't think it'll be that bad. :)

Wow, Blackpool tower has grown since I last saw it. It was just over 500ft then
I've been to the Grand Canyon, it's a natural wonder of the world.
Shame they got to deface it with this "attraction", but thats Yanks for you, the canyon itself isn't exciting enough.
My knees feel week just looking at that thing! The Canyon is magnificent enough without experiencing that vertiginous view.

You could stand underneath & look at the air hostesses knickers :hihi: :hihi: :hihi:
I was reminded of this platform in Norway which I think fits in more harmoniously with its surroundings.
Maybe even gave the Americans the idea?

I hope that they don't get any 'jumpers'.

That was one of the first things I thought too.
But then I thought, dont T-shirts usually sell better?
I know...... I'm sorry.:(
Plain Talker 21-03-2007, 11:55 Wow, Blackpool tower has grown since I last saw it. It was just over 500ft then
Sorry, I was thinking 983 feet... *wonders* where did I get that from? (I might have been thinking of "La Tour Eiffel"?)
My calculations were based on this:-
Platform over canyon= 4k feet,
and Blackpool tower = about 900 feet, (as I thought)
my genuine mistake: it's about an eighth of the height of the platform canyon, then... my maths was right-on-the-button, it was my assumption of the height of the tower that was off.
(maybe to someone who has a phobia of heights, like me, it just seems higher... )
Plain Talker 21-03-2007, 12:04 I'm getting very confused, now...
just googled the height of the Eiffel Tower: some sites say 990 feet, others say 1046 feet / 319 metres, others say 984 feet/ 300metres, another says "300 metres (986 feet) tall, not including the television antenna on top" yet another says 920 feet... ( must be the expansion and contraction of all that metal ! )
I wish they'd make their mind up.
googling the height of the Blackpool tower gives a figure of 520 feet/ 519ft 9inches (what's three inches, to 500-odd feet? *shrugs*)
The walls look a bit lower than those in the preview drawings.

There aren't any safety barriers at the canyon. A lot of areas are pretty much straight down anyway, there are lots of places to jump from already, so I wouldn't have thought the bridge will make it any more likely.
Jabberwocky 21-03-2007, 12:20 I get queazy on a shag pile carpet so theres no chance Id go on that.
BruciesBabe 21-03-2007, 12:35 We (Osiris and I) will be there in a couple of weeks and we can't wait to walk on there - what an experience!
Very excited - the photographs will be phenominal!

Make sure you post them
There's been a thread about this before and I'll say the same as I did last time: love to go on it, particularly with a stiff piece of cellophane in my pocket, crinkle it very slowly and look for the stampede:hihi:
My Missus went to the Grand Canyon a few years ago and brought back a little piece of rock, no blooming wonder it's as deep as it is if all the tourists take a bit of rock back home with them.
Skywalk is located on the Hualapai Indian Reservation, on the south side of the Colorado River. This land is outside the boundaries and jurisdiction of the National Park Service, and belongs to the Hualapai Indians, so they can do what they want with their land, I guess. It's a very, very isolated area (think no paved roads) and the tribe's previous attempts at a casino failed.
The Grand Canyon is so huge (the Hualapai's land alone is 1 million acres) I think that unless you are looking for the Skywalk, you are unlikely to see it. Myself, I can't wait to visit.

redrobbo 22-03-2007, 03:16 No chance of me stepping out on this skywalk.
I get dizzy just going up two floors in a lift! :hihi:

Aw c'mon redrobbo, I'll hold your hand. :D I'm not crazy about heights myself, but somehow, I don't think this will be as bad as it seems.

You are very kind Sierra. Unfortunately, I suffer from a medical condition in which my brain doesn't always properly interpret the visual signals of my eyes - and stepping out into 'space' and looking down would certainly throw me a wobbly! Aarrgghh!

Oh dear, in that case, you'd best admire the view from a distance. I had a bad experience on a ferris wheel as a child, and was somewhat fearful of heights after that. However, as I got older, I was unwilling to give up flying, or hiking with friends and family. I found as long as I mostly looked out, and not straight down, it was ok.

dieselbabe 22-03-2007, 07:34 I use to be a dare devil not long back i go on any scary ride or anything that looked dangerous. But since i hit 30 i become more scared of things now, and was stuck frozen to the spot when i went up blackpool tower and seen the glass floor, so i dont think i could do that skywalk, if i went to it i think i be able to walk to the start of the walk just befor it starts to become glass and have a quick look round then go back out.
I saw the 'sky walk' on the news the other night.
The things a COMPLETE eyesore! I think we should send them our own 'Peak District planning commitee' - it would never have got past them.

Ummm--when you advance onto that Norwegian platform do you have to walk over the curve and then onto the underneath part of it? I see there are handrails to help you:hihi:
Seriously, one has to assume that the structure has been tested for a huge margin of safety even if fully loaded with viewers, so why not go onto it? The glass will be reinforced and the sight of such a vertical drop would be awe-inspiring!
I've been up the CN Tower in Toronto which has a partially glass floor you can walk on, there is a 1100 foot drop below. People stand on the edge of the glass holding on to friends as though they will fall through if they stand on it.

I did just that :hihi: Eventually built up the courage to walk out on the glass. I didn't stay there for long though. By the end of my travels I'd got much better at dealing with heights and managed to properly jump up and down on the glass floor at the Auckland Tower.
I think the CN tower advertises the glass safety by saying it could hold the weight of 14(ish) hippos. It's still glass though :)
