erm, with all due respect, it's quite a claim to say that kickboxing (alone) is the ultimate in self-defence...and aren't you the person who in april 06 said you'd never trained in martial arts before? there are already reputable kickboxing and muay thai clubs in sheffield...what do you offer that they can't?

is this one of those clubs where the instructor goes to a class themself and learns techniques and then the next day goes and teaches them to their own pupils??

ANVIL
21-03-2007, 07:37
oh, ok - i was hoping that you was going to say that it wasn't you teaching the class to be honest - to have had less than 12 months martial arts experience and then be running a class...hmmm...good luck!

p.s. regardless of that though, no one style is ever going to be the ultimate in self-defence, no matter how good it might be...

Can that class compete with this?

BEGINNERS CLASSES :
MONDAY 830PM , THURSDAY 830PM , SUNDAY 12-130PM (Wellington Street)
TUESDAY/THURSDAY 730PM (Sheffield Hallam University, Broomgrove Road)
WEDNESDAY 6-7PM ( Usport , Goodwin sports centre)

Female only class = THURSDAY 730PM (Wellington street boxing gym)

Want to just do your own thing and be coached on a few finer points (wether beginner or advanced) :

FRIDAY 6-7PM

Or, if you have done kickboxing before or another martial art to a decent standard,

EXPERIENCED CLASSES :
MONDAY 630-830PM (Wellington Street Boxing gym)
TUESDAY/THURSDAY 830-930pm (Sheffield Hallam University, Broomgrove Road)
FRIDAY 7-830PM (Wellington street boxing gym)

Visiting martial artists/boxers/kick or thaiboxers from other gyms are always welcome and regularly make an appearance at AFK.
We seem to be getting members from Royce Gracie BJJ club, Tangsoodo and also quite a few amateur boxers seem to be giving kickboxing a try. All of them add to the multi cultural/multi style sort of flavour at AFK.

Wellington street boxing gym is near the fire station in the town centre and also near the Devonshire cat pub.
The gym is fully equipped and has everything from weights to bags, to speedball/floor and ceiling ball and a boxing ring for sparring.

All the classes are taught by kickboxers with actual kickboxing ring experience. All instructors are patient and used to dealing with people at all levels from a nervous first timer, to sports people/athletes who simply use kickboxing to further their main sports aims right up to full contact kickboxers.
AFK has something for everyone

if this class actually starts up i might have to go along just to see how good it is and let everyone know. on this thread look at the date of his post,

http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=152656

how can anyone become on instructor in less than 6 months of martial arts training, i trained for about 3 years befor i was even asked to help teach a class. it took me about 5 years of training and my first black belt before i took my first class on my own and still now after 9 years of training i wouldn't like the prospect of trying to start up a club by myself. so how can sum1 with less than 6 months experience in martial arts period hope to run a successfull club?

no disrespect intended but i have seen this sort of thing many times where the instructor learns the techniques one day and the next teaches them to a class. to be an effective instructor and have a successfull club it takes many years of training and experience in martial arts.

The problem that people might be having with this is that if you do start a new class and the tuition is not to a reasonable standard, ie if you're just taking money off people and not giving anything back, then this (a) is unethical and (b) gives a bad impression to the public about martials in general and does not do any good for the other martials arts places out there where there is good tuition and where the instructors have worked hard over a long time to get where they are.

What is your name, what is your kickboxing experience and who actually taught you?
Just curious thats all.
But yes the more clubs on the kickboxing scene the better. I personally help clubs build up their profile by being invovled in Full contact events.
Please get in touch. I have a few ideas that could boost your membership.

Your club sounds like it could be a good "feeder club" for AFK.

sorry craig, but if you're going to promote yourself on here then you have to expect questions, and if you can't answer them then what's the point of promoting yourself in the first place? this isn't an advertising board (although sometimes you wouldn't know!) -it's a public forum, for discussion - it's ridiculous to think you can put a post on here about a club, having acknowledged you've trained for less than 12 months, and not expect any questions...and it's the validity of the questions that's important, not the status of who's asking...

(no comment about the 'coming to spar' stuff'!)

not offended mate - kickboxing's not my scene anyway - just curious about the notion of setting up a club with less than 12 months experience. i do think we ALL know though (and that should include robby) that no one is going to put a kickboxing thread on here without getting a grilling! :hihi:

No one turned up as the class is due to start 27th April (sorry my mistake)

Discipline will be all important so there will be a 3 strikes rule, people breaking the rules

1) will be made to do 20 pressups

if that don't work

2) A spinning back fist shall be applied to the chest

if that don't work

3) you will be barred

What a strange post , you are clearly taking the ****.

1. 20 Press ups
Is this a kids class
What makes you think that adults are going to be breaking "rules" in a kickboxing class.

2. spinning backfist to the chest: if it is against kids then its a child protection issue. If the spinning backfist was applied to one of our fighters, im sure that you stand a chance of being beaten up very badly in front of the whole class. Just letting you know thats all.

3. If that doesnt work they will be barred?
If that didnt work (which it wouldnt) you would have the **** kicked out of you.
Not being funny but no GOOD martial artist or even your average young will take that kind of **** off anybody.
Just telling you what I know. If you want tips on how to teach kickboxing then all you have to do is ask.
LOL

3) and if a class manages to get 20 or so members every week, then why would they want a franchise?

Forgive me for not replying sooner but I'm just getting back to things after we had twin girls a month ago!!!!!

BUT - my obsession with this thread is now over due to the appearance of what I had expected all along.

This thread is a little like a pregnancy infact --- only it lasted a little less time and had far less point ot it!!!!

Hello, Another Good kickboxing club is one run by claude who has one at Netherthope and Walkley. Also you could try Lethal Latif's in Firth Park Clock tower. Both are very good instructors, well established, friendly and disciplined.
Cheers

Yes Claude's club is good. I know Claude very well.
AFK which is my club is also an alternative if you are nearer to the city centre.

Wellington street boxing gym to be precise which is situated near the Devonshire cat pub and also across the road from South Yorkshire Housing Association.

Here are the training times.

BEGINNERS CLASSES :
MONDAY 830PM , THURSDAY 830PM , SUNDAY 12-130PM (Wellington Street)
TUESDAY/THURSDAY 730PM (Sheffield Hallam University, Broomgrove Road)
WEDNESDAY 6-7PM ( Usport , Goodwin sports centre)

Female only class = THURSDAY 730PM (Wellington street boxing gym)

Want to just do your own thing and be coached on a few finer points (wether beginner or advanced) :

FRIDAY 6-7PM Open session

If you have trained before and are of a good standard.

MONDAY 630-830PM
TUESDAY 730-9pm
FRIDAY 7-830PM (Wellington street boxing gym)
In the advanced classes there will be sufficient people to spar with quite a few of which are active competitors.

I didn't really do much other than the obvious then 81/2 months later sat in 'greens' and held a hand ...... that was about the most painful thing .....

As for the seminar ...... I've got far more important things to give my money to ....... like trying to establish Jedi as a religion for example .....
