View Full Version : Sheffield Folk Festival... will you be there?
Given the recent thread on publicising very low-budget, not for profit events I'm interested how many people are aware of the impending Sheffield Folk Festival (http://www.sheffieldfolkfestival.org/ 29th 31st Oct) and if they will be attending?
Are people interested in folk music/dance and the ever evolving traditions within our community?
Would you go to folk event(s) not knowing what to expect, but knowing you are supporting a local community event?
Hope to see some of you there.
O
pitsmoorlad 27-10-2004, 07:16 I won't be anywhere near the folk festival. Load of people singing about sailing to Botany Bay in the merry month of May, with a hey nonny no. And the others are dancing round with bells on their legs and a balloon on a stick. Have a good time all you Angora jumper wearers.
(just stating my opinion, no offence meant to any angoras, living or dead)
Moon Maiden 27-10-2004, 10:46 I would have tried to come despite plans already made for this weekend, except why on earth is it spread about the city?
Perhaps it is my strange idea but I figure a festival....something happening all in one big field with tents and stuff????
Nice weekend for it what with the Hunters Moon and samhuin though :D

Wil try and make it down to some of the events, if you get the chance I highly reccomend seeing Tegwen Roberts.

If your feeling left out Pitsmoorlad, just grow a beard, stick your finger in your ear, don your sandals, get a pint of real ale and you'll be fine.

Blimey, now I know what all those super-focussed beardies down the Sheaf View listen to at home. But why the finger in the ear? Surely that would make lifting pints and pushing my pregnant wife out of the way at the bar rather difficult, and that runs counter to the beardy approach to chivalry while buying beer.
I would go but i have decided that it would be more entertaining to allow myself to be attacked for the duration of the event by the rabid goat in graves park.
In otherwords No!

A beard ? me ? and cover up this handsome face ? Sandals?? With my feet?
I did go to a folk club once at Dronfield, found it very strange. All the songs were about meeting a fair maiden, setting sail for foreign shores, and wearing things all around my hat. Give me some good ole blues music any day. "I woke up this mornin....etc etc"

Is he the one who coughs a lot?
rincewind 27-10-2004, 14:21 What happened to the South Yorkshire folk festival that used to be held at the Crucible?
I saw some great people there...Ralph Mctell, Jake Thackray, Derek Brimstone etc etc.
Incidentally, if anyone's interested, I saw Ralph Mctell in concert last night (26.10.2004) at a very small venue here in Denmark, and I'm pleased to say that the master still has it.

If this is what you think modern folk music is about, I higly recommend going to a folk festival event and broadening your horizons.

pitsmoorlad 28-10-2004, 07:48 Thanks for the invite Shine but I'll give it a miss. I'm allergic to Morris Dancers, and think it should be outlawed by parliament.
And all the folk singers I've seen, (well not that many actually) seem to sing very nasally, and all the audience seem to be middle class teachers, doctors, solicitors etc, who listen to songs about tramping through the countryside, then go off to their private villas in Marbella.
As the old Yorkshire saying goes, "there's nowt so queer as folk"
