A walk will be held of around 7.5 miles this Sunday, 25th March round Wharncliffe Woods near Grenoside. The walk also includes Wharncliffe Crags, and for most of the way is on cycle tracks or the Trans Pennine Trail.
The walk will commence at 10.45 outside the Old Harrow on Main Street at Grenoside, finishing probably around 4 hours later at the same place.
For people arriving by bus, the no 66 leaves platform c4 of the Interchange at 10.15 and gets to Main Street at 10.35. I`ve not checked return times at this point, but I`m led to believe that they`re hourly.
I have checked out the Old Harrow for food possibilities, and wheras they dont serve food normally, the landlord has offered to put a buffet on for us if we give him a couple of days notice (didnt ask the cost, but I cant see it being expensive). This sounds a nice idea to me, otherwise its flasks and packed lunches.
For further infomation on this walk see www.theaa.com/travel/details/cycleride/418765
Any new walkers would be especially welcome, this a lovely area with lots of historical and geological interests, and stunning views from the top of the Crags

Taxman has asked me to add his name, as usual. Also he`s keen to give the end of walk buffet a try too. Any more for any more?

Same for me. But if I don't manage to turn up I'll pay my share for the Buffet which will need to be ordered prior to the walk.

Or instead of ' mine`s a pint ' - it will be - ' How much do I owe'!!

I'll get off my bum for this one, and I'm also game for the buffet. I'm taking some time off work next week so this will really set me up - and if it's too demanding, I can grab a lie-in on Monday morning.

Change of mind here, scubz - I'll stop for the buffet, too.Put my name down for it,please.Ta!

Awwww Godzy, you`ll be fine, you`re fitter than most!
The paths should be ok cos they`re all cycle tracks. The only difficult part as far as I can see will be getting up to the top of the Crags from the Stocksbridge Road. But hey, when we get there, we`ll be almost able to wave to your house won`t we?
Anyway, thats 5 for the buffet, which should be about enough to make it worth their while doing I think.
See you Sunday

I'm a definite now... there's only so many weekends I can bring myself to go to work - especially when there's a walk in the offing!

(and a buffet too... mmm, lovely food....)

Latest update on buffet at the Old Harrow pub at Grenoside.
I`ve informed Matt the landlord there that there will be a minimum 7 people for the buffet, and he has aked that I confirm numbers by 12 noon Saturday.
I have made him aware that there are vegetarian walkers, and also a couple of `gannets` likely to be present (Taxman, Scubz).
It will be a finger buffet (hope they`re not well-done lol), and he says that there will be enough for about 2 platefuls each and that the cost will be £3.50a head, which I think is excellent value.
In fact, if any forumers want to just meet us there for a drink and some grub, and not do the walk, they will be more than welcome! - huge hint to a certain leader!

Yes no-booze Bert, the landlord told me that they have a tea and coffee machine, so you`ll be ok there. One thing they don`t have though are empty yorkshire puds :hihi: sorry to disappoint you

Think I might be up for this one if its not raining, although I`ll probably give the buffet a miss, unless they have chews and gravy bones of course!
I`ll not be coming on many more walks now cos I`m emigrating in 3 weeks, so this might be my last one :-(

One of the places we keep talking about trying to walk, but not this time i'm afraid Nomme has chiken pox and is in quaratine, and he needs the company to stop him going nuts. Hopefully only another week to go.

See you at another one.

Just back from yet another grand walk with ItIsNow, Scubz, Taxman, feargal, ALBERT T SMITH and Twinky1. They were still in The Old Harrow when I left, sharing out what remained of the plentiful buffet that had been prepared for us. Now going to get a nice soak in the bath.

What a CRACKING walk that was.Really enjoyed it.Beautiful weather and the most magnificent views from atop the crags.Loads of fun to be had scrabbling across the rocks - thankfully nobody came a cropper.
And then there was........ The Buffet. And what a buffet it was.The table was PACKED with goodies.Everything tasty under the sun.
Thanks to the landlord at 'The Old Harrow' in Grenoside for providing such a feast - and thanks to scubz for arranging it.:)

I'll second (or is that third?) that! Excellent company, lovely stroll, and a brilliant buffet at the Old Harrow - it's a lovely little pub, and the landlord did indeed do us proud...   I'll be going there again - thanks Scubz.

It was perfect walking weather today - warm, slightly breezy when we got up on the tops - even if it was a bit too hazy for the long-distance views. Even the little scramble up the crags was worth it for the view at the top.

Well, what more can I add! To say the buffet at the Old Harrow was good value is an understatement. Such good value in fact that another walk in that area is a must, just so we can end up there again for another magnificent buffet. Cheers Matt if you check this thread out.
The walk itself was excellent, with some lovely views from the top of the Crags. What a shame hardly any people ever go to Wharncliffe Crags, it`s a hidden gem for me.

The touch of arthritis I exerience in my hips and knees kicked in when I got back from the walk, and despite a nice hot bath, I've been plagued by aches and pains. It is so good that the group caters for strugglers and stragglers. Lots of patience for anyone who wants to take things more slowly - or just chat up other random walkers! You know who you are - Albert! I am also nursing a blister, but also a memory of a really nice day with lovely people. After the buffet I couldn't face more than a couple of rivitas for my supper - oh, and a nice big Gin and Tonic. Thanks for the good company everybody.

I am convinced that when scubz phoned in to say that there were 7 takers for the buffet, the landlord heard '17' - there was so much wonderful food.

A very enjoyable walk though it will be regretted that the official photographer was not with us to record it. I have not had time to look at the video that I made but I expect it will be up to the standard which the directors expected in 'Hollywood'.
One regret that I've got is that I did not record the buffet that the land lord at the Old Harrow, Main Street, Grenoside put on expecting us to only pay £3.50 each for it. It was well worth the £5.00 which we all paid and I trust that a fellow forum reader or member will convey our sincere thanks to him.
I will be calling at the pub again be next time for a meal.

This was my first Forum walk and it was just perfect, the company, the weather, the views and the buffet at The Old Harrow at Grenoside was to die for after such a lovely walk.
Thanks to you all for making me feel so welcome and scubz for organising it all especially the food.
I told my sister who lives in Grenoside about the feast we had in the pub, she said Matt's buffet's are always excellent value for money and he keeps a good bar.

I am looking forward to my next outing with you all.

See you soon.

This was a brilliant walk, I really enjoyed it, especially clambering over all those rocks. That was so cool!
The buffet was really good too. My dad brought me some pork pie and sausage roll out to his car, cos I wasn`t allowed in the pub, and they were great!
I`m hoping my dad will bring me to Sundays walk too!

Hey Sassy

You've obviously got suppler joints than I have. You danced over the rocks whilst I felt more like a troll heaving myself upwards. But the sense of achievement once at the top of the Craggs was priceless. Brilliant day. Hope we'll have many more.
