View Full Version : Sheffield Cat Rescue places?
freaklikeme 19-03-2007, 19:29 We are wanting to adopt a cat (not kitten) and I wondered if anyone could recommend a local rescue?
My daughter is 4 so the cat we adopt will have to be reasonably child friendly but we're willing to spend lots of quality time with the new addition to ensure he/she settles in happily.
Any recommendations will be much appreciated :)

These guys are excellent! We got our Jaffa from them and we couldn't be happier with the little devil. They'll show you a range of kitties and are really friendly. Best of luck getting a suitable candidate :)
babychickens 19-03-2007, 20:26 they are indeed fantastic, and given that one of your friendly mods (medusa) works there, you might try PMing her to find out whether they have any likely candidates.
out of place perhaps, but thank you so much for deciding on an adult cat; so many people want kittens, but adult cats can get incredibly lonely and need lots of love too. you get all my kudos points for today! would it be cheeky to ask whether you might consider 2 adult cats that can keep each other company?;)
I was just going to suggest the same- its a while since I called in the cat shelter but I know you often get pairs of cats brought in for adoption, often through no fault of their own- a relationship breakdown, a bereavement, a job/house move where cats are not welcome. Good luck freaklikeme, hope you can find the cat (or cats) for you.
freaklikeme 19-03-2007, 20:39 Ha ha..thanks Babychickens! We want an adult as we think the combination of our daughter and a kitten may be a recipe for disaster . Also we've always said if we were to get one it would be an adult simply because they often get left behind.
As for getting two...we'll wait and see how No.1 settles in first!
We adopted our cat from the Cat Shelter. Must have been nearly 10 years ago now. She'd been abandoned with her kittens :(
Kittens are so beautiful and cute but an older cat is often a much better option. From what I remember - the cute little kitten can be very disruptive :D
We got our cats from Royston Animal Welfare.

The people there were very friendly :)

Awwwwwww! You took Jaffa? I was SO in love with him! (I fall in love pretty regularly, as you can imagine- the trick is to hold off liberating them from the Shelter until someone else falls in love too, or I'd have 30 or 40 cats by now!).
I'm only a volunteer at the Shelter, so I'm not really supposed to give out any details of individual cats- that's the warden's responsibility. What I'd advise is to go to the Shelter any afternoon between 1.30 and 3.30, register with the Shelter, and the wardens will show you all the suitable cats that are in at the time. Before you adopt, they will expect you to visit with children, so that they can see how the children are with the cats (and how the cats are around the children), but the policy on rehoming to families with children is not set in stone- some children and some cats go together perfectly, even when the children are quite young.
BTW- moved this to the pets group.
hennypenny 19-03-2007, 21:28 We got our cat and kitten from the cat shelter (we only went for a kitten and ended up taking her mum as well ;)), then we were a bit slow off the mark getting the kitten spayed and ended up with another 4 kittens, we rehomed 3 and kept one. Our 3 generations get on really well together and 15 years later they are all going strong, happy and healthy :)
I don't know if you helped out at the shelter back then Medusa? Ours were called Malinda and Autumn at the shelter, but they are now Millie and Peggy.

Not quite that far back hennypenny- I've volunteered there for 9 years now.
I love hearing about how many happy people have adopted from the Shelter though- there's a lot of feelgood factor that makes people carry on volunteering there.
freaklikeme 20-03-2007, 14:22 Medusa,
From the first visit to the shelter how long is it 'til we take the cat home? I'm guessing there are checks to be done etc?
The reason I ask is my 4 year old daughter is poorly at the mo so we've told her we'll get the cat sooner rather than later...she's so excited! It still may be a week or so 'til we can pop down as she's covered head to toe in chicken pox and is very lathargic. I just want to give her some nice news.
Thanks in advance.
