oooo, we like dog shows :D
have you had any contact with the woodseats festival too BB?
yay :D Can't wait! (Bet T comes into season early just so we miss it  )
could you let me know what is asked of the dogs at one of these shows. I would like to bring Ozzie up to the standard. As yet he has a short attention span but I have noticed that he will instigate a session of his tricks.?????.
We took Ailsa to a companion show at Nostell Priory when she about 2- it was great fun, only thing is, the dobermutt spent most of the time dancing on her hind legs instead of acting like a sensible dog. http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/katkin2/Ailsadoesballet.jpg
Altho she did occasionally stand to attention (when bribed) http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/katkin2/DSCF0329.jpg
Totally not like her dad n siblings though- I think we got the dobe that was dropped on its head as a pup, she is totally daft!
Worse- I was wearing a button/press stud denim dress and when she jumped up she managed to open up my dress and give the crowd more than they'd bargained for..oh the shame... Fortunately we didnt get that one on camera...http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/katkin2/DSCF0337.jpg
But we put her in the dog with the glossiest coat novelty competition and she came 2nd, so my baby does have a (one and only) rosette. http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/katkin2/DSCF0331.jpg
She had a go at agility too- http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/katkin2/DSCF0324.jpg that was great fun and SO TIRING but we would love to play again. http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u30/katkin2/DSCF0312.jpg
If you look at the kennel club website I think they tell you what to expect.

TattyBear 20-03-2007, 21:23 Damn, we went to ecclesfield dog show last year and it wasnt brilliant. I am getting married on 2nd september this year so i will miss it,unless..........:hihi:
Thanks Katkin for the info. Ozzie didnt come with his papers, I dony know why, I am not likely to breed with him, he is not intact anyway. and I presume that will mean I cannot enter him any way but he likes doing tricks (could it be the payoff) and i enjoy teaching him,
carpetviper 20-03-2007, 22:57 so is it only pedigree's with papers that can enter.
PS I think you flying superdog looks fab, should have been given a prize for the most gracious take off ever.
it asks for reg. no. date of birth, I do not know ozzies
companion shows don't need papers - that's the point ;)
CV, anyone can enter companion dog shows, pedigrees, cross breeds, heinz 57s.
There are usually classes for pedigrees (usually AV Groups rather than breeds), then the novelty classes like 'best 6 legs in the ring' 'dog the judge would like to take home' 'old dog' 'waggiest tail' 'best cross breed' 'dog most like it's owner' etc etc
I refuse to enter my spotty dog into 'dog most like it's owner', despite what people say about my skin!
Oh, and if the judge's wife enters 'best 6 legs in the ring, no matter how nice your legs are, they won't come first!
How old does the dog have to be to go to one of these shows? As for training is training by the owner acceptable or do they need training by a professional? What sort of competitions are held?
there is no age limit as far as I'm aware... although they may need to beover 6 months for the pedigree classes.
training by the owner is perfectly acceptable. In addition to the above classes, the usually also have agility and sometimes obedience
Sounds like an event I would like would come along to take pics of the dogs doing their thing, is it possible to get 'ringside' so to speak?
Would many folks object?
Maybe I could make pics available if there was the interest.

I didnt think that was the case- yes you might need papers if you want to enter in the pedigree classes, but there are other classes too, usually.
As mentioned above, (Lotti and Strix), there are lots of 'classes' and as long as your doggie is well behaved and unlikely to take a chunk out of the judge, all dogs are normally welcome. The one we went to was outdoor, so lots of people could watch from outside the ring and take photos and the organisers usually tell you what they want you to do- stand and pose, walk around the ring with your dog, let the judge touch it/ poke around in its mouth etc.
Its great fun- I liked the fact that there were other activities going on such as the agility ring. Its great having the opp to do something like that.
Give it a go- take your dog/ dogs along and see how you feel on the day- yes, there will be the serious dog-showing folk but you can treat it as a bit of fun (like we did - knowing our dobe is a pillock) and you never know, you may still come home with a rosette.
PS I think you flying superdog looks fab, should have been given a prize for the most gracious take off ever.
She'll do anything for a tennis ball - or a pig's ear - other than stand like a normal dog and behave, that is...

If you're going to do photo's, can you make them available only by a PM link, rather than on open threads please?
I'm not the only one none too keen on having my pic splattered over t'internet, having received threatening PMs in the past, and you don't tend to get many beagles at these events ;)

If I put any online they'd be through some gallery site like photobox, though I don't want to upset anyone if someone asked me not to put their pic up I wont.

Threatening PMs?!! I do wonder about some people :loopy:
Love beagles though, will deffo be trying to get some nice shots of them if I see them. TBH I'm more interested in getting nice pics of the dogs than people so don't think you need worry about your face appearing all over interweb. ;)
bobtailbabe 19-04-2007, 11:31 just to update everyone that the shows are on again please pm for more details or ask lottie & strix they know all about them puppies have to be
6mths old before they can enter (sorry kennel club rules) but dogs dont have to be kennel club registered to enter :loopy: and yes there are classes for heinz 57's (they are the best)
cavi lover 19-04-2007, 20:52 My understanding of Companion Dog Club Shows is that the dogs are registered with the Companion Dog Club and ANY dog can be in that club. Go to Kennel Club website for more details.
My cavis are all in Com club including my ex breeding bitch puppy farm dog who has no reg papers at all. Hope that helps .
I think will be at the 30th June show.
bobtailbabe 30-04-2007, 15:22 Thanks for that cavi lover but the dogs DO NOT have to be registered with the Companion Dog Club. This is only if there is a special class put on just for members of the Companion Dog Club. Hope this clarifies any quieries
my computers playing up at the mo and wont let me pm bobtailbabe, but i was wondering if stalls are still available at these events as we may be interested in having one for our greyhound rescue if possible if my off duty works out that im off. anna.x.
