Hi,

i took my 3 year old daughter to Heeley city farm a few weeks ago for the first time and didn't think much to it. Plus she got really badly attacked by a goose whilst we were there, it was going for her neck and wouldn't get off her until i swung the gate on it to get it off (not too hard for all you animal lovers)we went in the area where the pond was but apparantly it should have been padlocked to stop anyone going in. It wasn't and there wssn't even a notice to say you shouldn't go in. Was not a nice experience.
Graves park is good or chatsworth farm, i've also been to the butterfly house and would recommend it.

Cannon Hall Farm at Barnsley - on the outskirts. I absolutely love it there & I'm in my 20s!!! Although I have taken my niece and nephew there (aged 7 & 3). They have a hands on farm, you can buy a bag of food to feed animals with, all gates are low so kids can stroke the animals (such as lambs) - obviously if it's safe animals. There's no big brick walls so kids can see everything - everything is see-through. They also have an adventure playground & garden areas with birds etc

Not sure about Public Transport to White Post Farm. Always gone by car.

A TIP:

many parents will probably be aware of this but - take some 'wet wipes' or something similar (those anti-bacterial one's if possible) and make sure you wipe 'little one's' hands after they've touched any of the animals.

They are quite hot on stuff like this in the States but the last time I went to Graves Park they didn't really have adequate hand-washing facilities.

Tropical Butterfly house is open all year round and anti bac gel and wash basins are plentyfull. There is an outdoor nature walk with a skunk, birds of prey, ferrets, parrots, baby animals lambs, bunnies etc and inside the tropical house are butterflies an ant nest , spiders, tropical species, fish, marmoset monkeys. There is an indoor play area and there is ample opportunities to feed the animals and talks and handling sessions are held throughout the day. There is a cafe and outdoor picnic area.

A fab and educational day out for all ages.

23 bus to Dinnington from Sheffield think there may be a few more services ?

No.19, 19a bus from Dinnington to North Anston

Wow that sounds as if it will be pretty good! The name 'butterfly house' doesn't really give many clues to everything else that's there. Somewhere to take neices and nephew me thinks

I know it's only open on Sundays and I've not been for years but my son used to love going to the Fire Museum when he was 2. Lots of fire engines to play on and they used to have a Fireman Sam. It was free - don't know if it still is. It's by West Bar police station in town

Save your money, the Deep is pants!!!!

If you are going to Chester Zoo, there's a big aquarium over that way called the Big Blue. Loads better than Deep.

You have to pay to get in but it is a brilliant little museum. Might not be ideal for toddlers although my oldest, now 5, thinks its brilliant.

Wigfield farm at Worsborough is nice for toddlers

http://wigfield.barnsley.ac.uk/index_.html

X10 Sheffield-Barnsley bus passes nearby.

The wildfowl and wetlands centre near Retford is one of my favourite places to visit with children, but I think you might need transport.

Lotherton Hall bird gardens http://www.leeds.gov.uk/lothertonhall/ is less than an hours drive away, and is free entry (although it is £3 to park). There is a fantastic variety of birds to see in the huge aviaries, including condors, cassowaries and hornbills.

If it is a nice day, we used to enjoy a walk up at the Wiremill dam or at Rivelin, with a picnic and a stop off at the playgrounds. Might be best waiting for the summer for this though :)

Western Park museum has loads for littlies now too.

White Post Farm - We were there all day and had a fab time. Our boy was 2 at the time and loved it.

Twycross Zoo. - Excellent place. Another full day to be had.

Wentworth Garden Centre also has a pets corner and play ground, and some farm animals.

There's also a great farm at Wosborough called Wingfield Farm. Its very hands on with loads of working animals

eureka near halifax is a good place to go, it is inside or out so no matter what the weather it is ok, it is all hands on so it learns the kids different things
