I just saw this on Sky, when they were interviewing Dicky Bird about Flintoff.

Poor old Dickie was devastated. :(

This is very sad news, after loosing yesterday Bob was quoted:

Coach Bob Woolmer, whose contract is unlikely to be renewed after the tournament, later said he was considering bowing out of international cricket.

He said: "I'm going to sleep on this one as I've had a very bad day, which ranks along with my worst days as a coach.

"Coaching is what I like to do but whether I continue to do that at international level is under discussion.

"I'm going to give it some thought."

There was some discussion amongst my mates that Bob was going to be the next England manager. Sad news indeed.

I was chatting to a few mates last night about who should take over the England managers job after this world cup and 4 out of 5 of us wanted Woolmer. Very sad.

I saw him a number of times at Lord's in the 70's in one-day finals and my abiding memory of him was that wonderful shot he played off his pads through square-leg (which I think he modelled from Colin Cowdrey). A genuine good egg, I thought, who will be missed by so many.

I know he was utterly broken after the Pakistan defeat yesterday, but this is truly tragic.

They are treating his death as suspicious and the BBC have just said it could be possible murder.

I supported Kent as a kid in the seventies and Bob Woolmer was my cricketing hero. In a team with a number of stars, winning competitions regularly, he stood out as the class act - Opening bat, nagging medium pace and exceptional close-in fielding.

It's a minor shame that his association with South Africa meant that his involvement with England only amounted to 19 tests as a player, it's a huge shame for cricket that his involvement has ended so abruptly.

You have prompted me into relating this tale (somewhat embarrassed) but as student and moving to places/clubs etc. the captain would invariably ask me what I did? I remember replying:"I'm a bit of a Bob Woolmer really", obviously the 'bit' is extremely 'bit'. However, Bob was as you described, except that when I uttered those words - not too many would know of him as he hadn't played for England and he batted about 7 (at first) in that successful Kent side. Basically what I was trying to say was "an all-rounder" whose role-model happened to be a big favourite.
The way he walked to the wicket impressed! I saw some footage on BBC when he was in the England cap and short-sleeved sweater - no advertising on it - and he looked (and became) the class-act you described.
I can still picture that beautiful shot tucked square, off his pads, towards the Mound Stand at Lord's. I could never copy it for sure!
The hallmark of any 'great' or 'icon' - in whatever sport - is the time they exude, never hurried and making it look so easy. Most people will remember Bob as a coach - brilliant at Warwickshire alongside Reeve - but my memories of him are as a quality all-round talent for both Kent and England - just glad I've got those memories on board.

I have just been checking to see if I have any signed pictures of Bob who was two months younger than myself. I have his autograph but not where I wanted it, with a frame in mind. My Debretts "Who's Who" isn't signed nor his picture in the 1976 Wisden when he was accorded one of the "Five Cricketers of the Year."

However, in Christopher Martin-Jenkins' tome: "The Complete Who's Who of Test Cricketers (1980)" the author writes of Woolmer:"A rosy-cheeked and genial man with great confidence in himself, Woolmer is a graceful right-handed batsman with a casual air and a delightful 'touch' - the comparison with Colin Cowdrey has often been made - who drives fluently on the off-side and deflects with a delicate sense of timing.
He is also a useful medium-fast bowler who swings the ball considerably in cloudy conditions , and a safe close fielder." I couldn't have put it better CMJ!

I seem to recall hearing a report that there was vomit all round his room, which made me think it was an accident after a heavy session, but they must have some reason to investigate. My mates and I were talking about it just as it was announced, and we all said "Surely a coincidence?" ..........

Shocking news and it all sounds slightly surreal.

If this is foul play then perhaps betting is involved. Cricket has been linked with match fixing and betting scandals before.

Who would think when this thread was started on the Cricket World Cup people would be posting links to murder investigation news stories...stunned

Another article from the guardian suggests he was strangled, the world cup hardley seems worth it if this is what is at stake.

Here's an interesting old article (doesn't seem too dated)

http://omarlovescricket.blogspot.com/search/label/Mushtaq%20Ahmed

The guy leading the police investigation was interviewed on News 24 and he was saying it was two people and urged one of the people to come forward to 'give their side of the story'.

I think they know who it is and why. Perhaps Bob was going to spill the beans.

Vaughan was interviewed today and he stated that the passages of play between Pakistan and Ireland looked very suspect.

The plot thickens
