Try the kennel club website, they show breeders who are trying to sell puppies, but they are hard to come by. I know it took me ages also you must be prepared to travel, there appears to be a number of breeders in south wales. Or try epupz they have some puppies for sale.

As always,

Be careful with epupz - the breeders on the kennel club website are accredited breeders whilst the breeders on epupz are not vetted.

Slightly off topic but, whats the difference between a KC accredited breeder and someone with just an affix?

I am not after a pup but would like an older dog if possible say one thats been brought on for show or one who hasn't made the grade!!!
A puppy would be nice but not essensials

Have you tried contacting the breed rescue?

teeny

i have rung loads of places up including sheltie rescue!!! lol

Lotti

More and more people are now keeping their unsuccesful show dogs as pets so you may have trouble there

Sheltie rescue is probably the best bet even if you have to wait. Otherwise try looking up breeders on the KC website then looking at the ones wih websites, some offer older dogs for sale on their websites (or you could try ringing) as accredited breeders will take back the animals they bred to sell on if their owners can't keep them.

Bailey's mum - here's the webpage about the ins and outs of being an accredited breeder: http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/474

No problem :)

Slightly off topic but that signature sounds rather rude!! Just out of interest, do you get many pms?

baileys_mum

As always,

Be careful with epupz - the breeders on the kennel club website are accredited breeders whilst the breeders on epupz are not vetted.

Be careful where ever you get your dog from, use your common sense, visit see parents, do your homework.

Just because they advertise on the Kennel Club website doesnt mean you wont get any problems.

Lotti
18-03-2007, 13:10
Well obviously.

But epupz is constantly being advertised on here and it drives me crazy. I'd happily see it banned from being advertised on the forum.

Epupz is a far less reliable place to look for a pup than the KC website.

I have had first hand experience of this

I would only use a breeder as i have heard bad stories from other places. I have always had shelties and one of the reasons i want another is i know their temprement and charactoristics.
I also have children coming to the house and shelties mix really well with children especially special needs children.
I had a child here who was from a broken home and sat telling my old dog Rusty all about what had been happening to her when she was alone at Mummy's house, he just sat there with her and she will really miss him now he's gone. along with all of us.
This is why we want another one to love

Aw teeny good luck in finding one... maybe you could ring around recommended breeders and explain your situation and leave contact details with them so that if they hear of an older dog that needs a home, or one of their's comes back, they can contact you.

Try
http://www.collienet.com/shetlands.htm

for info about the breed, breeders and rescue

also http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/

and http://www.champdogs.co.uk/

the breed societies
http://www.pet-locator.co.uk/built/dogs/pedigree/pastoral/shetland_sheepdog/societies/index1.shtml

and
http://www.dogclub.co.uk/dogs/profile-shet.php
You should be able to find lots of info about the breed, any known ailments and some good breeders from these.

You probably will have to be prepared to travel to a breeder out of this area tho- we have a dobe and 4 pedigree cats all different breeds and we only managed to get the Maine Coon locally, and that was because the Maine Coon breed society secretary happens to be in Sheffield.

I love Shelties - one of the breeds we considered before the dober-mutt. Good luck - keep us informed and we will insist of PHOTOS when you strike it lucky.

Contact Rainrescue too (you may need to email)

she not only rescues from the pounds but has many other contacts - and provides a facility for private adverts on her website

Shelties don't seem to be a breed prolific in rescue at the moment - which is actually a good thing ;)

I can put in touch with a few people I know having owned Shelties since 1984!!

You may recall my thread Here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=184743) when we lost our lovely Max (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y144/shieshuk/MaxKids.jpg)!

I will PM you, we could meet up some time with our Shelties too!

Personally I would never buy Shelties via Epupz, quality shelties are sold often before they are born. Buy via www.yssc.co.uk or other quality breeders I can give you details via PM.

Any 'breeder' in Wales should also be treated with caution, unless you know who you are dealing with. There have been a number of puppy farms springing up of late, and if you want to see how the mother of your pup may have been treated at such an establishment, RainRescue can usually supply you with photo's of RSPCA commandeered or dumped bitches who's condition is nothing short of shocking resulting from production line matings

Ezpups seems to have way too many litters advertised after the litter arrives rather than before mating takes place too - and we all know how many unwanted dogs there are already. Breeding with no owners lined up is irresponsible and shouldn't be encouraged

I agree about epupz. The kennel club sales register is useful however only breeders whoe entries show a rosette are accredited by the Kennel Club. Useful to know

ah thanks for that md1ba, I didn't actually realise until you pointed it out!!

Sheltie rescue is arranged by Mrs Beryl Butler who lives at Chapeltown, she is a wonderful person who has bred shelties for years and has forgot more than most people know, she has retired but still does rescue in this area, you'll probably have to wait, and you will have to convince her that you will be a suitable owner. If you want her number P/M me.

Ooh how exciting - that was quick!
You must tell us all about him/her...

teeny
20-03-2007, 23:55
all i know is he is 16 weeks old , a tri colour , and we think we may call him Badger, he is coming on thursday from Dewsbury !!! I am looking forward to it . The reason we are getting one so quickly is that we have a little girl who stays here sometimes , she lost her mum last september and Rusty our old dog was her friend and our house will be very empty without a friend for me to walk and play with.
Rusty was 16 years old and had cancer but until last week was quite happy and in no pain but last tueday he was really poorly and went down hill very quickly we felt it was kinder to let him go . Steve at peak vets put him to sleep and he went very peacefully. peak vets were fantastic and nothing was too much trouble for them.

Yes, I think it's very important that Takara goes around there for some crucial socialisation for the pup too :D

Would it be a problem if I forgot the dog and ended up coming alone? :suspect:

HOW LOVELY to hear of this pup. I was brought up with shelties as my grandparents bred and showed at a high level.Crufts best of breed. that was along time ago tho.
I tried for a sheltie pup and waited and waited and gave up and ended up with cavaliers who are just as lovely but different!
Hope all goes well with your little darling.
