Hi guys,

Just a quick poll... (no, I'm not running a puppy party)

For those of you who don't know what a 'puppy party' is, it's a chance for your pup to socialise with other puppies and young dogs, providing an essential learning experience.
It's not a training class where dogs are taught to ignore each other, it's a chance for pups to meet eachother in a controlled environment and where puppy owners can discuss the ins and outs of pup ownership and ask a trainer present any questions or advice about their new pup.

The only dogs present will be similar aged pups (at least a week after their first jabs) or vaccinated dogs that get on well with pups and can help them to learn how to behave acceptably around other dogs.

(only read this if you want to know more - it can be boring for those who already know why puppy parties are run!)
When pups leave their mother and their litter, they are usually placed in a fully human family, sometimes with the presence of another dog.
They have to learn how to behave around their human companions, but also need to know how to behave with other dogs.
Many of the rules for behaving around other dogs, and people alike, are learnt through canine interaction. It's a lot easier for another dog/pup to teach a puppy not to bite hard because the puppy is already programmed to learn in that way, hence the reason us humans are taught to 'yelp' and pull away. A puppy simply doesn't learn the same way people do, so what better than to allow your pup to mix with other puppies and of course young dogs who've already been through the learning process of living with a human family and can help your pup learn more quickly what's acceptable and what's not?

I think it depends on the place, but if I ever ran one your 8 month old puppy would be welcome to come along as long as she was fully vaccinated and good with other dogs, especially pups :D

LOL BV, I haven't got anywhere to hold it at the moment! But without going into detail, it may be a possibility in the not-too-distant future!

I haven't a puppy at the moment both my dogs are "grown -Ups" but I would definitely go to a puppy party I have heard of them before but I have never known anyone who has had one It seems a good way to socialise with the other dogs around the same age.

Its a great idea-altho our dobermutt is too old at 5 yrs. We took Ailsa to puppy training classes and this included an element of socialisation with other dogs of a similar age

Tilly went to a puppy party at our vets. It was really useful but she terrorised some of the smaller pups there at first. It did her good to socialise with other dogs (I'm not sure the other owners felt the same though).

My vets have puppy parties. Molly missed hers as they forgot to send an invite out, Poppy went & loved it, as did Lilly. The odd thing is, Molly is the only one who is ok with other dogs.

I would be really interested. In fact we were only talking about this the other day. Our pup needs a bit of rough and tumble and chasing. In fact are there any puppy parties about?

Yes I think they are a great idea, When our Bow was a puppy we took him to meet friends and neighbours dogs to socialise but he never had the fun of running around with other puppys.

Ooh this thread appears to have been ressurected!

Well guys, come September I should have my venue! Unfortunately it will probably be too late for you guys by then as it would be for puppies under 16 weeks who had had their first jab :(

However - if anyone is getting a puppy which will be the right age in September (probably looking at mid September by the time it's ready) please let me know!

Sorry I've worked really hard to find somewhere before now but have really struggled - would've loved to have provided you guys with puppy parties!

I would be interested lotti

my yorkie is 10 months old and looks just like a baby because he never really grew! Hes so tiny and hes currently going to dog training classes. originally i just wanted him to socialise with other dogs but they are all so much bigger than him and a lot older so i dont think its working for him, he was so scared last time he was sick all over my mum! it would be great for him to socialise with other dogs his size so theres less danger of him gettin hurt and younger puppies would be perfect! so Im not sure if he would be able to come but he would fit in fine, hes so playful and not aggressive at all, he just loves to play and is fully vaccinated..please help!

finoni, at present I don't have facilities to run them free of charge due to not having my own premises but renting per hour :(

I may start looking around to see if people would consider going to a cheapy one!
