View Full Version : Halloween, Bonfire Night or Christmas?
They are all within a month of each other and this can cause severe shortages in the old wage packet every month, especially if you've got children.
Which do you like and hate the most? I've got to admit I like Christmas but not for the shopping-traffic-sold out shops-last turkey fights etc.
Halloween is good fun except for the trick or treaters who now tend to annoy and demand rather than put an effort in and be gracious.
I think Bonfire night is my favourite just for the atmosphere - families gathered around a huge fire, keeping warm out in the cold, the fireworks, baked potatoes etc. . the only thing which ruins it nowadays are the chavs who let fireworks off in streets.
Then new year, then valentines, then easter... plus birthdays on top... it never stops!
my favourite is Halloween, but i miss it this year as im on holiday in Dubai, and i dont think they would take kindly to a 17 year old british maniac walking round dressed as edward scissorhands
guess i have to settle for bon fire nght, xmas is good but they start selling stuffing and talking about it way too early
Moon Maiden 25-10-2004, 13:09 I do love Halloween and Christmas. They have become more meaningful and less commercialised for me over the last 8 years.
I tend to have my bonfire at Halloween as part of my celebrations :D and is the main source for the tradition of Bonfire night.
Moon
Hallowe'en, never recognised it.
Bonfire night, no room in garden for bonfire (unless I ruin lawn), so give kids money instead of fireworks. They can watch other people's from bedroom windows!!
Christmas, love atmosphere and spoil kids
Agent Orange 25-10-2004, 13:38 I'm a proper sucker for Christmas, but not to the extent of erecting silly festive furtniture in the garden like most seem to do these days. I love making an all out effort with everything, including shopping only because I've discovered internet shopping.
Bored of early fireworks, not keen on begging children.
I like fright night in town.
Adore Christmas and I love the atmosphere but I have to work hard to stay away from shops till December and ignore TV ads like argos cos it really spoils it.
If they did it all in December I think I'd enjoy it more.
generally Im a sucker for celebrating stuff like b/days and valentines although I disagree with grandparents day! What a crock!
Maybe it time to campaign for an xmas in its own month.
mr.blaze 25-10-2004, 19:42 My favourites Halloween :D We always have kickin parties every year and not once has one flopped. Bonfire night is OK but not really anything to celebrate. Tbh I wish Guy Forks suceeded in his plans. XMAS is just a time for getting drunk and spending too much money, nothing new there.
slimsid2000 31-10-2008, 13:43 Remember remember the 5th of November gunpowder treason and plot, for i see no reason why terrible treason is ever to be forgot.
I'll say Xmas.
Halloween used to be good when I was a kid, Mum would decorate the house and dress up and we had special "ghoulish" food. It doesn't mean anything to me nowadays.
Bonfire Night has always been special because it's my birthday. I still love watching all the free firework displays from seven floors up but I miss traditional local bonfires.
Christmas just has a nice "feel" to it somehow, a time to be with loved ones and over indulge a little
leviathan13 31-10-2008, 15:49 Bonfire night for me, just because I like fire!
Pauline Bell 06-11-2011, 16:33 Last night must have given pleasure to some louts who broke a window in my son,s van put fireworks in it and set it alight. The van was used mainly to get my sonto hospital, he is a tetraplegic, the van was fitted out with an automatic ramp for his wheelchair. Now they have no means of transport I just hope the person or persons responsible realise how much heartache they have caused my son and his wife. The police say there were five cars burnt out in that area last night and what punishment will they get probably nothing.
My favourite's tied between Halloween and Christmas.. Even at 35 I still enjoy dressing up for Halloween, and I love getting presents for Christmas.
twibstix 06-11-2011, 16:47 Always celebrate Samhain, usually go to at least one bonfire (but did not this year), loathe Christmas - do nothing to "celebrate" it.

They wont be punished because they wont even catch them.
Unfortunatly there is no answer to this mindless violence.
I can only suggest you get out of that area and into one where this kind of thing happens rarely.
Mind you Guy Fawkes Night is a celebration of mindless violence, that is of various men being hanged, drawn and quartered.
It is not suprising really that it tends to bring out the base instincts in some people.
That being said, I am sorry to hear about your situation.
Its like being asked to choose between Coronation St,Brookside and East Enders-a really hard decision to make,
Sean Hughes 06-11-2011, 19:04 Christmas all the way!
Little Boots 06-11-2011, 21:19 It's a toss up I really love Christmas but I also love Halloween cause its my birthday and I love dressing up
