By raising teh taxes... I'm sure glad I don't pay anything to teh Taxman due to being on benefits (which I am entitled to before the Daily Mail readers start)

That's over £200 each (for every person in the UK), I don't want the Olympics can I have mine back please. I'll take cash cheque or Tesco vouchers. :)

Is it just me who finds the highlighted part of this quote rediculous

Jowell said last year the budget for building the infrastructure had risen by 900 million pounds ($1.73 billion) to 3.3 billion pounds, but some media reports now put the cost at more than nine billion. That includes a 400 million pound fee that will be paid to consultants responsible for making sure costs come in on budget

It's beyond comprehension. Barnet hospital in London only cost 40milion. That's an entire new hospital, you could build 10 brand new hospitals with the money the people are getting paid to keep costs down.
It makes me so f**king angry!

Do we actually need 1000 hospitals, considering we can't find enough nurses to staff the ones we have ?

(or was that just to help us visualise the amount)

Its madness ... but so is spending 20 billion on Trident.

What annoys me so much is most people knew that things would go way over budget.

The cost has already gone through the roof. Three times over the quote.

Remind you of anything that happened in Sheffield? Now surprises there then.

Tessa Jowells defence for the expenditure annoyed me.

London lost the World Athletics Championship, after being awarded it, because they couldn't get the stadiums built.

They said " Oh Sheffield and Manchester could co host it instead." No dice it was awarded to London, and that's where is should be held.

They bided cheap just to get a reason to spend the money they knew they had to spend anyway. It will spiral upwards. Wembley Stadium? Brand new stadium, can't use it for athletics. No track. What sort of dissension is that!

I can't believe the IOC have been so gullible ( or bribed ).

BTW my wife was giving birth when it was announced. The nurses cheering is just about the only thing she remembers :hihi:

At about £100 or £150 million per hospital (unless you're talking about the £500 million superhospital in Manchester or the £450 million being spent at St James's Hospital, Leeds), that's around 80 hospitals.

And remember, the Tories could afford to spend £22 billion on the Poll Tax 20 years ago.

I remember when we won the Olympic bid, everyone was over the moon.

I still don't know why :)

So because the Tories wasted a truck load of cash 20 years ago that makes it OK????

For today's equivalent of that truckload of cash - you have to double that figure. At least for £9 billion, you'll get an entire area of London regenerated, but with the Tories, we had the modern day equivalent of £40 billion plus spent on the Poll Tax with nothing to show for it in return.
