I've heard there's a European Lard shortage. I thought this was just someone on the internet trying to cause trouble, but when I went to Sainsburys this morning the Lard shelf was empty, and a notice had been put up suggesting vegitable fat instead.

Why is there a shortage of Lard? Have the government banned it :suspect: , along with King Sized Mars Bars and McDonalds Supersize meals? Is it the fault of the European Union, with Lard supplies being re-distibuted to Poland and Slovakia? Has it all been sent to Iraq?

More importantly, does anyone know which shops in Sheffield currently have any lard in stock? I feel the need to panic-buy coming on!

Lard is siphoned out of the buttocks of overweight Americans (which is wy its so bad for you - clogs the arteries AND rots the brain) however with the recent events in the Middle East the craven lot are once again hiding out in the US and depriving us of a steady lard supply...

I think I read something in the Times about this.

Something to do with former Eastern block countries who have recently joined the EU. They've been snapping up cheap cuts of pork and using them for sausages/pies etc.

Basically they've been outpricing Lard manufacters.

No Yorkshire puddings? :o

This may be the reason we have no lard: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3713028.stm

I want to know what's being done about it though. How come it's not been mentioned on Newsnight or the Today programme? Why hasn't Tony Blair issued a statment? How come John Prescott hasn't declared a state of emergancy?

And does anywhere know shops which still supplies of lard? I want to panic buy then sell in on ebay.

Perhaps we should have a Sheffield "Lard Aid" concert, with John Prescott shouting "give us your f*****g lard"

OK....which countries in the world have Lard reserves?

Time to detect some WMDs and dictators...;)

I posted recently about my mum's chips being amazingly amazing; I think the reason why was that she used lard rather than any of this vegetable oil nonsense.

Scotland used to be the crown prince of lard but I think all is changing. I remeber being at a relatives birthday bash in East Kilbride some years ago and all the blokes were comparing bypass scars
