Not sure if they can be judged 'best group'' on the strength of one album. I think we have to wait and see if they can maintain this quality in future releases.

In the same vein, I'm not really a Busted fan (too old, I'm afraid), but the media have started a sort of Busted/McFly competition, which is ridiculous as McFly have yet to prove anything. One single and one album does not justify a comparison with Busted in my opnion. Perhaps we are quick to judge the merits of today's new artists simply because they have a limited shelf life?

McFly are a decent young band, though theres no such thing as being to old to appreciate them.
You can like there music at any age its like a 20 year old saying Frank Sinatra is brilliant but i'm to young for him, its the music thats counts not your age.
Keane are new to the market with just 3 singles but all 3 are impressive and how many artists can do that with all three.

Who is Ian Gillan?

Killian
24-10-2004, 12:20
This is a joke, right?

Okay, if you really don't know he was the original vocalist with Deep Purple (before David Coverdale - think you may know him as I believe he's from Yorkshire).

Incidentally, Deep Purple were a 70's Heavy Rock band (never heard of 'Smoke On The Water'?) - you know one of those old fashioned bands who wrote their own music and actually played live as opposed to miming. I know it's a dying art, but it happened a lot in those days.

Ian Gillan rejoined Deep Purple when they reformed and is their current vocalist, I believe.

He left Deep Purple to form the Ian Gillan Band, which became plain 'Gillan'.

I'm not knocking Keane, although they're not to my own particular taste (Joe Satriani and Steve Vai are more in my line), but I would say that many artists these days release at least 3 singles off every album, but not all of them sustain that quality with subsequent albums. Let's discuss this again after Keane's next album.

Keane are ok, they're not the best group of today. I like the song 'Somewhere Only We Know'. I think that Keane really need a guitarist tho! I'll do it :P

Muse are the best group of today. Listen to Origin of Symmetry first, then Absolution. OoS is slightly better than Absolution but Absolution is a great album.

In terms of new acts I'd say that Franz Ferdinand are the best new act to come out.
Their debut self titled album gets 4/5 stars in my book and I'm not really that easy to please with new music!

Muse are from Teignmouth in Devon. Only famous people from Teignmouth, apart from Psycho Tim Kelly, who is more infamous than famous.

I agree that Franz Ferdinand have released one of the better debut albums this year, but the best release so far for me (debut or otherwise) is/are The Killers. Cracking album with some fantastic tunes on, I can't recommend it enough!

Don't ask me how I know this cos I don't follow either band. But the lead singer form McFly wrote a couple of busted's singles.

Yes, you're right about this. It's Tom Fletcher. Co-wrote several of the songs on Busted's last album.

Cycleracer, as you know, I have a respect for your opinions. However, I disagree here. It is obviously down to subjective opinion, but I feel there is nothing to touch Radiohead as the finest British band today. They are inventive, experimental and unique [given their Eno, Can and free jazz influences], whilst at the same time highly accessible. Their music is highly contemporary, and has a great breadth of style to it. I don't think Keane are in the same league. Mind you, I bet most people would agree with you here. Maybe I've had too much to think!

Of course I could name many top bands of the past, Queen, ELO and so on but Keane are in my book anyway, the best band around.
By the way the highest Radio have reached with a single is number 3 with Paranoid Android.
Thought I'd put my DJ head on there.:hihi:

Oh, Cycleracer, since when has getting to the top of the charts been ANY indication of quality?! :D

Having said that, I agree with you that Keane make beautiful music and the singer has a gorgeous voice - just imagine how good they'd be with guitars! But for me they're missing a certain something that makes a band MAGICAL.

Not many bands have that quality today, I think perhaps Franz Ferdinand do, so I'd say they're the best new band around. For me, they're the only new band to have that sense of excitement, that extra something that hits you in the guts, that all the great bands have.

Very true, Keane with a nice acoustic guitar playing in the rhythm section of the band with the piano taking lead would be great!

I like The Music - Welcome To The North - I urge you to go and buy it - it's an excellent album.

I like most indie music -: The Strokes, Coldplay, Radiohead etc.

Ha, ha - you're very funny.

Clearly my use of the exclamation mark went straight over your head.

I meant for me, Keane would be even better if they were more of a traditional band (that is guitar band), with the piano taking a less prominent role.

Hope that makes it clear - I'll try and express myself better in future ......

Well I meant what I said, starsparkle

In the style of coldplay (but not necessarily copying them! :P) with the piano taking the more prominant role.

If the guitar took the lead role then it would take away keane's sound. If it was just in the background then it would enhance it.

Nice to hear I'm funny

Keane - Right - are you ready - here we go - A bunch of droopy, no talent, middle-of-the-road, wishy washy, namby pamby, Loyd Webber wannabies, middle class, middle aged, twinkly piano'd, nursrey rhyming, bannal lyriced, meaningless phat producers, sorry assed whining, can't get laid, or if they can only by people that listen to their droning, tim rice wretching, plagerised, 1980s piano based, butlins bar room crooning. And I imagine live they will be dull as ditch water- only one style of song. over and over, boring, middle england, no guitars, no talent, songs of praise style. soulless, ballless, corporate bitches, suckers of satans cock each and every one of them. I reckon all their choons will be used in some dreadful coporate campaign to sell tampons, whereas we all wish that keane would use the tampons to stuff down their collective throats and stop them making that god-dam awful, cat wailing, pigmy raping noise that they insist on inflicting on the dull herd of the consumerate, that will buy any ****e as long as it doesnt challenge them and comes in a nice packet. ITS ****E. I HATE IT. I MORE THAN HATE IT. ITS EVIL. ITS SPEWED OUT OF SATANS BUTT. ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRH!!!!

Boroughgal [Jane],
I can't listen to Franz Ferdinand without thinking that early XTC, Wire and Talking Heads did it much, much better. True, they "rock", but a lot of the material sounds like a "lite" version of the jerky-riffed, quirky stuff to be found on "Drums and Wires", "Pink Flag" and "More Songs About Buildings and Food". I bet they are good fun live, though. Regards.

Amazing live. Saw them last week in manchester. Highly recommended as a live act. Never understood their claim to be a "dance" act till that night.

On the other hand this from BoroughGal "Keane are a bit whiney"
sums it up in a more compact and petite way.

Sorry Tim, only just seen this!

I'm sure you're right, but some of us can't properly remember the late 70's!!!!

Nah, but seriously, what I do know/remember of XTC and Talking Heads (gonna have to ask Dave about Wire...!), they were really good and my sort of music. I have to say, though, Franz remind me a lot of Iggy Pop in places. So what you reckon to them then?

I saw them at Leicester a couple of weeks ago and they were brilliant live...

If yr such a big FF check out the back catalogue by The Yummy Fur. This was the band most of FF were on before they consciously decided to appeal to the masses. And they were much better in my opinion. Try and get hold of the 7" policeman on the defunct Slampt label. It’s a gem. Failing that start with the "Sexy world" album or for a large collection of early stuff on the Kodak Nancy Europe album.

Ah…they were ace the yummy fur…played Sheffield quite a lot too.
